Being called too thin

Recommended Posts

I am 5'3 and I started at 150 and I am now down to 123 lbs.My original goal was 115 to 120 but I am happy where I am now so I decided to stop losing and start maintaning. It apears that I am still losing but I have been eating Mfp suggested calories which are 2000 since I have an active job.I also exercise which means more food.

However , today at work this person was like"omg you are too skinny! Someone else told not lose anymore weight and others are complaining that I am getting too skinny.

The thing is I am not trying to lose anymore weight. I am not sure if I lost more since my last weigh in which was a month ago.I try to weigh myself once a month the first thing in the morning before I eat anything to get a consistence reading. So I am going to monitor my weight to make sure I am still not losing. When I look at myself in the mirror I still look the same and I don't think I look skinny at all. This is really bothering me and I wish they would keep that to themselves.

Anyone had the same problem?

Oh my god your body is so effing hot and compact!!!

Okay, sorry about that, anyway....

Tbh I used to be really really heavy and then I lost a ton of weight. I'm still not where I want to be but considering where I was 120lbs ago (yes, I lost approximately one you) I'm much happier. However this past week I had a lot of relatives who hadn't seen me in over a year deem that I was "too skinny" and "didn't need to lose any more" so I definitely get how it feels to be called "too thin" when you certainly don't feel like it but just ignore it.

However, no, you're not too thin. If you want to tone up then go for it but you don't need to lose another pound IMO. The way your body looks now, I think dipping lower than -5lbs would make you look a bit gaunt and take away from that cute little body you have.

You're not too skinny Layta. It's just a lot easier to sabotage the girl who's in good shape than get there yourself. People can really resent being outshined.

Mizz Layta your body is perfect.

One thing is that people seem to believe that black females should be "thick" and that very well may be some men's preference.

Just keep your body where it's at.

I don't think it's thin at all-- I would say it's perfectly fine. It comes down to preference.

However, I'm more of a guy who likes toned bodies. Thin? Nope! And you're lightyears away from being fat.

Could it be the clothes you wear? For me, I started wearing clothing down a size because it would be too baggy (I'm 5'9" and I love my Royal Blue Abercrombie hoodie and sweatpants because the combo is so comfy). Better cut and fitted clothing works wonders and eliminates the illusion of sag. And don't get me started on Canada Goose Chiliwack Bombers I see everyone wearing in Toronto... /facepalm

For instance, your second picture IS telling the truth of how well you look. Rock that awesome body girl!

If people are used to you being fat, you will look thin to them now. Wear clothes that fit your new body. Not too tight.

Take your measurements and weigh yourself every week to see if you are gaining or losing.

Nah, I don't think you're too thin. You look great!!!

I think people are so sedentary now a days, when they see a fit person in real life, they don't know how to handle it. Trust me, I rarely wear dresses to work, but when I do, next day or so the other women are wearing dresses too...in other words, the fems at work are always "watchin'".

Yes, I get the same comments. Mum, people here and there tell me to stop cuz I'm too thin. I'm like 155 - 160lbs now. Trust me, I am not thin. I had a time I was like 131 - 133lbs. I called myself "skeletor" back then.

But this week I started to worry a bit cuz my business suits were falling off of me...but, I feel like I could lose some more weight...

Maybe I miss being "lean and mean". When I was 130's, I was a bad azz back in the day!!!

I think those people are either jealous or don't know what "too thin" means.

Your body looks perfectly healthy! Don't see anything wrong with it at all. Definitely not "too thin". Keep up the good work, you look great!

Did you wear baggier clothing before you lost weight? When I was overweight I always wore baggy clothing to try to 'hide' myself. Giant hooded sweaters, baggier pants, etc. But occasionally at formal events people saw my figure. I went from 155 to 115 and then Summer hit and I shed my baggy clothes. Some people freaked out. It wasn't that I was actually scrawny. It was just that the change seemed really drastic and sudden to them and it freaked them out. At your height I imagine the weight you lost made a noticeable difference, and if you came out of hiding at all with new confidence, it may have just shocked a couple people.

And then unfortunately yeah, some insecure people go into a sort of subconscious sabotage mode with comments like that. I just took it as they meant well and appreciated it. Like maybe they felt jealous of my success and couldn't help it, but they were trying to frantically mask that and be nice, and their brain barfed out 'concern' as the cover story.

In that sort of case the best thing to do is to tell them all the ways in which your lifestyle became healthier as part of the weight loss, acknowledge that it was hard (even if maybe it wasn't for you) and then maybe drop a few helpful examples. It sort of validates their own struggles as being hard, so they don't feel like failures, and also turns the convo to health instead of your size, which as an added bonus might help encourage them to do good stuff for themselves.

I think this is right on the money. People get used to seeing you a certain way, so when you lose a significant amount of weight, their perception is that you are now too thin.

It's not necessarily true, though.

From your pictures, you seem quite normal.

But whenever I tell people I need to lose weight, they look at me like I'm deranged. I'm not. I could use with losing about a stone. I'm not obese, but my ideal weight is 20 pounds lighter than what I am right now.

I think people are also now so used to seeing fat people that it's become the norm. I mean... a size 16 is now the average in the UK (that would be a size 14 US). And whenever I see friends say they are going on a diet, someone always pipes up saying they don't need to lose any weight... when they are actually quite overweight and DO need to lose weight, and KNOW IT!

You're not too skinny. You look great. I was told just the other day by a female friend that I was too skinny and didn't look good. But I like the way I am now. I was always slender and I hate when I put on belly fat. I think so many Americans are overweight that people start to think that it's normal. Some people's bone structure is meant to carry more weight, but as long as you don't have bones popping out you're okay. I also happen to love slender/petite women. I guess everyone has their personal taste, but if you like the way you look and feel don't worry about what anyone else says.

Layta, you will find that once you start lifting weights it will be very easy to keep your weight in check. The muscle you put on is metabolically active and will burn calories. I'm hardly a body builder, but I mostly just do resistance/weight training and hardly any cardio and I have no problem keeping the fat off. Don't worry about getting "bulky" because women don't have anywhere near enough testosterone to start looking like a man. If it were that easy to bulk up, every guy would look like Arnold. :)

This is spot on. Most people don't realize how fat they are. I'm tall, so even though I didn't look fat, I still easily lost another 20 pounds of body fat. Since I'm tall and have a slender bone structure I can pack on a lot of fat without it showing much.

Yes, but I'm talking about people who are not tall and are actually FAT, by any standards. And they recognise that fact and say "right, this is stupid, I'm gonna do something about my weight". And then on comes the PC brigade, saying they are not fat, that they're beautiful just they way they are, blah blah blah. When the point is... they ARE fat. And they KNOW it. And they want to fight it! So don't discourage them and instead tell them they can do it!

I mean... being 20 pounds over your ideal weight is not really a big deal, but when you're about 100 pounds over and people still say you dont need to lose weight... Something is wrong with society and the way we view "normal weight"

Lol....I hope so. Cuz sometimes I flex in the mirror and worry about working out too hard. I don't wanna look like a dude :(

Agreed, I can go like 25 over and carry it pretty well. I'm sorta tall and curvy. ;)

I'm also about 20 pounds over what I should weigh. I carry it very well. And I'm still within my BMI "normal" thing. I'm not tall though, but I do have enormous boobs, where all the weight seems to get stored...

i have encountered this a lot, mostly from other women. "you're too thin" comments. what they fail to understand is that it really is equal to being called fat/overweight and can hurt just as much. just because i am very thin doesn't mean i am not self-conscious about my body (i am). people shouldn't comment on any weight b/c they don't know what your body really is like, what it needs, how it is structured, what your goals are, or what your health is. weight - for fat or thin - shouldn't be mentioned. i dislike the thin comments a lot, whether they stem from jealousy, who knows and who cares. they make me self-conscious and i've always disliked it.

Why'd you have to tell me that?

A lot of larger ladies think that shovelling chocolate in your mouth every day is normal. That fat is normal. One of them recently offered me some chocolate in the office, I took one piece and she went 'oh for god's sakes take another one!' when I said no thank you for more. Not all of us are into gluttony and apparently it's news that some of us feel that way.

Yes, I've worked with rude people. Ask them if they would tell someone "omg you are too fat!", but don't wait for the answer.

Aside from that, the numbers you've given don't sound unhealthy, so if you're happy with your current weight/size/shape then keep it!
