Working and Hours They Want?

Recommended Posts

It has been a few years since I have worked job-wise but since then I have gotten interviews and applied to places a lot of retail spots mainly. Anyway a lot of the hours I've noticed a lot of places are wanting from people are

Graveyard shift

8AM-2AM

I don't drive, using the bus at 12-2AM only certain routes ride at that time and using a taxi or friend or family member at that time is a lot to ask. So a lot of these jobs I had to turn them down due to the late hours.

How can I get a job if a lot of places expect people including me to work these crazy hours? What would you do?

Most retailers usually have a wide range of shifts available, but it might be just your luck that a lot of places you've applied to want that shift. If you don't drive, it just isn't feasible to work those hours in reality. Also especially you don't want to be taking buses at that hour as it can be really unsafe for women. Anyways, try grocers and coffee shops. My first job was at a grocer starting in Dec and since grocers are open very early until late, or even open 24 hours, odds are they will have a shift that works with your transportation needs.

Can you learn how to drive?

8 AM to 2 AM is an 18 hour day by the way.

Traditional shifts are 7 am to 3 pm; 3 pm to 11 pm and graveyard 11 pm to 7 am

I also am unaware of any retail establishment other than bars, restaurants & mini-marts that are open at 2.

Even if the OP learns to drive, there still exists the issue of affording the cost and maintenance of a car. I know when I worked retail, there was no way I could afford a car of my own on a part time minimum wage salary unless I was living with my parents.

Keep trying OP. I'm sure you will find something.

Start applying to jobs that are only open during the day or till early evening.

d0nnivain, Good catch on the 18 hour day. Military, hospitals, and public servants are the only ones I know that work crazy shifts of 24 on/24 off, with limited paid rest periods.

I think the OP mis-typed the hours....

OP- There are so many ways to get from pt A to B- scooter, boat, horse, pony, train, trolley, cab, bus, bobsled, canoe, (okay Im gettin carried away...Ohh a ballon too!) you get the idea...be resourceful. An idea will come to you :)

I'm aware of figuring out how to get from A to B but even my parents think 12am OR 1am isn't a good time for me to be getting off of work.

Many retail places are closed at normal hours, but that doesn't mean there aren't still employees there working in the store doing things while the store is closed. Work doesn't stop when the door closes!

It's fine if you have your own transportation or you know someone you could carpool with, but it can be unsafe for a woman taking public transit at that hour unless you live within close walking distance.

I'm sure you can find something with earlier working hours and also the hours they want right now may be a result of the holiday season. If it's only temporary, maybe your parents wouldn't mind picking you up until the holiday season is over.

Quite simple - find a job with hours that suit.

Plenty of places require late night work...this doesn't mean that all do, and it certainly doesn't stop you from getting a job elsewhere.

Something may be holding you back...but it definitely isn't this.

Frozen just curious, what don't you drive? Personal decision? Medical reasons? It will definitely hamper your ability to get a job and work schedule that you want if you're dependent on the bus schedules to get places.

I hardly drive and I've worked many jobs where I have made it work. It isn't always easy, but as long as you live somewhere with decent public transit, it shouldn't affect your ability to hold a job.

Well I never heard back from the Goodwill job, and I even organized their CD, Video game, and movie section when I was browsing through their store before and after the interview for the hell of it ha. I thought for sure they would have hired me but I guess due to my low job experience they didn't want me.

How long has it been since you interviewed? I've had places that were interested take up to a couple weeks to contact me back.

Either way you have more interview experience for the next job, always a plus :)

The interview was this past Tuesday afternoon and the manager told me at the end

"I will call you by Friday if I am interested in having you join our team"

Thursday and Friday came and gone and no call so no job.

Well onto the next place then. Keep your head up and keep looking.

Should I call the manager up on Monday and follow up asking what happened? Thats what everyone keeps telling me to do, but I don't think I should, the manager had told me that if she was interested she'd call me by Friday and did not call so why call and bother her on Monday?
