Darren2013
Not that it really applies to me as my doctors have stopped ordering lipid profiles for me. But I am just curious because my Dad is on cholesterol medicine. For those who take the medicine does this mean you can get away with eating anything you want and still keep your cholesterol account below 200? It would seem like taking medicine is the easier route than changing the diet.
FitChick
Eat natural fats like nuts, avocados, salmon and olive oil. Tell your dad to take 25mg of DHEA available at RiteAid or CVS to regulate his hormones. His HDL levels should increase while LDL will lower. Ignore the total number. You want a higher ratio of HDL (H=healthy) to LDL (L=lousy). Statins are very dangerous.
carhill
OP, no panacea. Meds have effects too and sometimes they can have quite negative ones. After dealing with my MIL getting muscle damage from her cholesterol meds, I managed my mom's care with diet and kept her off the stuff, since it was far easier to control food intake than assuring consistent med intake, in addition to her having enough physical and mental problems as it was. Our doctor always recommended attempting control with dietary changes first. That said, since your father is presumably mentally healthy and taking care of himself, it's really hard to make any sort of decision other than what he wants to do. Why? Because he'll do what he wants to do, regardless of what you say or do. It's that autonomous human thing. If you're providing full-time care, perhaps different story. That's what I was doing, due to mental illness. In your case, I'd see it the same as my MIL, if you're terminal. She was 80 and cholesterol meds weren't going to extend her life appreciably so, after that round of muscle damage, off them she went. Whatever went on with her arteries and heart was water long under the bridge. Last I talked with my exW she's still alive and relatively healthy in her mid-80's. I hope the reports of your terminal condition are greatly exaggerated. Good luck!
Robert Z
Tell your dad to take 25mg of DHEA available at RiteAid or CVS to regulate his hormones. NGC1300
Dietary cholesterol and dietary fat has no effect on blood cholesterol levels. For years they told us butter and egg yolks would kill us, but it turned out to be a lie.
FitChick
You really shouldn't be giving out medical advice based on your crackpot radio show. I don't take aspirin because of the side effects. Too much can kill you, same with most things, including water. I've done my research and have taken DHEA for twenty years as well as many other supplements and hormones with no adverse affects. My endocrinologist says "Keep doing what you're doing, it seems to be working for you." BigPharma isn't a fan of DHEA, hormones or supplements. Wonder why?

You have no personal knowledge of the person, you have never met him and you have no actual knowledge of his medical condition. Even if you were a health care professional, you should not be doing this. What works for you could very well end up killing OP's father.
