M30USA
Every single detail about the birth of Jesus and, for that matter, most of the events of his life, did NOT happen the way anyone expected. If humans thought it up, it would have looked far different. Let's start a narrative here of what it would have looked like. Please, out of respect for Christians during this season, let's not turn this into a debate over the Bible's authorship. Thank you. Here are a few of my ideas: 1) Jesus would have been born into a rich, powerful family (in a financial sense), not into a family of commoners. 2) His birth town would have been an important city, not Bethlehem, which was equivalent to a slum. 3) He would have been given VIP status at the inn--and not sent away because there was no room. 4) He would have looked different from a baby to an adult--unique, special, and majestic. Not ordinary. What else?
pie2
Once a co-worker brought a book to work and it was some sort of attempt by a man to explain the universe and hereafter, and the power of "God". It read exactly like you might expect based on human understanding -- focusing on power, man's power, deeds, justice, vengeance. Just the way our society operates (in general): the rich hold the power and prosper, good are rewarded, evil perish. And that book was such a clear example of how humans attempt to explain the universe, and why Jesus' story SO contradicts our natural inclinations to understand life and everything else. To me, it is SO opposite to what we might think, it's just another reason why I believe and love Jesus' story so much. No one in their right mind would have invented such a weird story and tried to get it to take off with some ulterior motive of manipulating or taking advantage of others!! Anyone trying to persuade others would probably start by putting their best foot forward...not this "backwards" story found in the bible! Anyway, regarding Christ's birth: 5) The whole town would have been there worshiping the whole family from the get-go, bringing tons of gifts, etc.
autumnnight
Jesus would have been a rock star magician who healed every disease and paid everyone's electric bill and spent his life doing awesome miracles to convince people He was real so they wouldn't have to actually have any faith. He would have explained every single thing to us that we needed to know or wanted to know and would have made us smart enough to understand it so that we could be God too. The end.
