Slow weight loss is probably best

It isn't so much important how fast an obese person loses weight. Keeping the weight off is much more important than losing it in the first place. A fast weight loss means nothing if one doesn't have a long term maintenance plan to keep it off. This is something one had to maintain for the rest of their lives.

 

There's alot of diet and exercise books out there. My theory is that all of them work for some individuals but you gotta find one that works for you or come up with your own strategy. Just make sure it is one you can adapt to for life. No sense in doing a crash diet for 30 days only to go back to old habits after that.

 

I personally think that losing 1 pound per week is a crazy goal. I remember when my cancer was in remission for a short time I put on extra weight. My oncologist thought the 1 pound a week weight loss goal is crazy and he set a more reasonable goal for me to lose 10 pounds in 6 months.

 

I thought 10 pounds in 6 months was a reasonable goal and it was something I could achieve without making too many drastic changes. The biggest problem that contributed to my weight gain wasn't so much the type of food I was eating but the amount and more importantly the time of day I was eating. Late night binging would be the big culprit. When I cut out late night eating I would lose 1 pound every 2 weeks. It was a slow weight loss. But a slow weight loss is better than a slow weight gain.

 

But I did end up exceeding my goal and losing 20 pounds in 6 months but only because the cancer did come back and metastasize. So it is pretty much a moot point now.

 

I still think the 10 pounds in 6 months is a reasonable goal with an eye on keeping it off for life. At that rate that's losing 20 pounds in a year and 40 pounds in 2 years, etc. so it does add up. Much better than gaining 10 pounds in 6 months.

 

I don't have any recommended restrictions on what you can eat. What causes the weight gain isn't so much what we eat but the processed chemicals put in the food. If everything was organic made with natural sugar and natural salt and good fats then I don't think we would see this high degree of obesity epidemic in America.

 

But bottom line is don't be in a hurry to shed that excess weight if you have it. Be wholistic in your approach and look at the long term big picture. The important goals are those that start off with baby steps slowly. Just like if I have a goal to become an owner of a company I have to be willing to start from the rock bottom and work down in the trenches first and slowly work my way to the top. Weight loss goals take patience.
