High metabolism is a CURSE!!!

Recommended Posts

If I just ate when I felt hungry, I'd be 130lbs. And because I'm male it results in bullying and ridicule and people assume you're malnourished. Most women are even bigger than me.

In the past I have weight trained, and got up to 175lbs. I stayed lean and looked really good. People on bodybuilding forums couldn't believe I was only 175. But I was having to eat 5,000 calories a day. No, that's not an exaggeration, and yes I know how to count calories.

I always feel better about myself when I'm lifting, but it's the eating part I can't stand. Right now I'm 155 and feeling really small.

Nobody should assume having a high metabolism is good. If I miss a meal I lose like 5lbs. This is a curse.

May I suggest speaking to a nutritionist and also go in for a full check up. Usually high metabolism carries some underlying concerns. Only a trained specialist would be able to make that determination. Age, genetics, and past conditions will be looked into.

You could be hyperthyroid (burning calories quickly) not to be confused with HYPOthyroid, which slows the metabolism. Does anyone in your family have thyroid problems -- hyper, hypo, Hashimoto's or thyroid cancer?

Unless your job involves an extraordinary amount of physical work (full-time competitive athlete, etc), if you are literally having to eat 5000 calories every single day just to stop yourself from losing weight, it's time to get a full blood test done. There are people who have naturally high metabolisms, but it doesn't usually vary to the point of losing weight whenever you dip below 5000 kcals/day.

I have a BFF who is the same- she has to struggle (or medicate) not to dip below 100lbs. And she hates it too. She is never hungry, and never gains weight from the junk food she prefers, unless she is on her meds. I am just the opposite.

So here is my theory. I think there are two kinds of body types- the disposers and the storers. Disposer body types get junk food in and their body just lets it pass through. The good food is all their body wants to use to build itself. So junk food means nothing but junk staying around to be used for building materials, which means their body accepts less of what they eat as real food.

Read: real = nutrient dense. And for the record, fruits, raw/lightly steamed veggies and whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, as well as sustainably farmed meats and dairy is what qualifies as real healthy food. Nothing else.

Storers, (like me) store it all away. If their body gets junk, it stores it away to be gotten rid of when they are not storing things up. Our bodies only want the best to build us with. So we build up toxins in our fat, where it waits till we detox/exercise/lose it.

So maybe it is not the amount of calories you need to focus on, but the amount of nutrients you are getting.

As a final endorsement to eating more fruits and greens for putting on body mass, look up Storm Talifero, a raw vegan body builder over 50. He is pretty inspiring. His family raw vegan website is called "The Garden Diet". They eat pretty restrictive, so maybe use it as an example of part of a plan...

I know the feeling. This is what happens when you try to push your body above it's natural equilibrium point. I'm about 175 at the moment and have to eat 3500 calories a day to maintain that, whereas at 160 I would be able to do that at a normal 2500. I seem to lose a pound or two every time I miss a meal too, and I suspect if I hit 185-190 I'd need to eat 5000 calories a day.

Not much you can do about it. If you want to eat fewer calories and maintain the same weight you can eat junk and have more bodyfat, but that's not particularly appealing.

I suspect I have low metabolism which is also annoying, but not like your case

^ This!

I thought I had a high metabolism cause I can eat tons and my body fat % doesn't change, but that is crazy crazy high! I'd definitely want to rule out something thyroid-y or anaemia-ry if I were you.

Otherwise you want to be on some sort of supplement or even a protein shake, but again the doc's the best place to start with that!
