Blasphemy is a ridiculous concept

Recommended Posts

The whole concept of blasphemy basically presumes that we can know the mind of God about what offends Him and what doesn't. It is not only a victimless crime but it is also one of those crimes that can't be proven. There's no way to prove that any action or word or thought or ritual or movie or video game is blasphemous. Why? Because what one religion considers blasphemous another religion may not.

I saw the movie Bruce Almighty again after 11 years. Morgan Freeman played God in it. The guy is a well respected actor. Some Christian groups are offended by that movie and they think it is blasphemous for anyone to play the character of God in any movie. I personally enjoyed the movie and thought it was funny.

Just because one group might be personally offended doesn't mean they get to project that offense on God and claim that He feels the same way. So in that sense there's no way to prove that blasphemy even exists. For all we know God might have seen the movie Bruce Almighty and laughed at it. Religious people don't think God has a sense of humor and that He's always serious and stern faced. Well who the hell wants to go to heaven and live with a God like that? We might as well go to hell then.

I just read another thread about some video game where the objective is to kill God. Many conservative groups find that kind of game blasphemous. To me it is just a game and it is for entertainment. So what if the theme of the story involves killing God at the end? What's wrong with that? There's got to be more to life than just going to work and making money. Some folks like to play video games in their down time as a way to recuperate and recharge from a stressful work day or week. It shouldn't matter what the story line of the game is.

I have my own sacred rituals of not walking over people's graves at the cemetery. I consider it sacred land but I would not presume that it is blasphemy because God doesn't care about where we walk. However I would have no problem drinking alcohol or smoking inside a church building or downloading porn on my phone in the church if I was working there and taking a lunch break.

It is ridiculous, yes, to think-believe that GOD can be offended (or feel hurt, or become angry) by the ignorance and arrogance of 'man' -- meaning, of course, humanity.

But. That does not mean that we cannot know the Mind of God. Of course we can; just like Jesus did.

If there's one thing I've learned in my journey of loving/worshipping God and drawing closer to Him, it's that He has an EXQUISITE sense of humor.

How do you know that? Isn't that... uh... PRESUMING that you know what God does & does not care about?

Of course Blasphemy is a ridiculous concept to the Atheist on the street.

But...blasphemy laws in Ireland and the UK, for example, make it an actual legitimate crime, and I think there are blasphemy laws in the U.S. too. When religion enters politics, you have yourself a Totalitarian government.

Democracy doesn't exist anymore, in my opinion, when 12 innocent people get killed for publishing a satirical cartoon which the Muslim Jihadists considered blasphemic to their religion.

Religion is the root of all evil, not money. Look at how governments use it, how the press uses it (notice how no American press organization has shown the full satirical cartoon Je Suis Charlie, for fear of retribution from Islamic Jihadists), how politicians use it to win elections, how radical religious groups use it to justify murdering innocent people who have the right to freedom of speech, how religious evangelists use it to create fear in the congregation to follow their lead, or to promote their agenda which is nowhere near peaceful or accepting.

How blasphemy got inducted into state and federal laws in various countries throughout the world is because the government wants to be involved in all things. Church and state are not separate anymore. They have an incestuous relationship and have had for centuries.

I think the following article proves that God has a sense of humour

25 Worlds Weirdest Animals

Though it's possible Satan had a hand in creating some of those creatures. Whatever prank resulted in the existence of the "Aye-aye" could have been the tipping point that led to Lucifer and his friends being cast out of heaven.

Personally I think it is good therapy to cuss God out when you are angry. He can take it like a punching bag. God can take the verbal abuse.

all parents can take abuse from their children....doesnt mean there arent consequences.....god is worthy of respect at all times...honor they father....honor thy mother.......how would you feel if some stranger came up to your father and abused him fro no good reason whatsoever...even though your father can very well take care of himself and smite anyone in his way....if someone hurts someone i love i defend....even fi that family member can take it on the chin......i defend............

and here i say god is my father and does not deserve your abuse or for you to encourage others to abuse him....he deserves more respect than anyone on this planet........he deserves respect therefore he must be respected....he made me he made you he made everyone there is nothing he hasnt been involved and had a hand in making ...he has mad skills...respect them........dont be a dick of a brother now darren...yes you are my brother and at the moment you suck ...so stop sucking....and be an adult and take that back.....deb

Like when I pray for specific things then wait on His answer - sometimes He delivers it through signs/messages from people with ironic names (such as Goldman Sachs - "men with sacks of gold" delivering a piece of financial information in the news... or a Mr. Cartwright resolving my transportation issues). Or the outcome of a difficult situation where balance is restored in the most intriguing way. Some call this synchronicity. I take it as a comforting (and sometimes mirthful) sign that God is in control.

Though it's possible Satan had a hand in creating some of those creatures. Whatever prank resulted in the existence of the "Aye-aye" could have been the tipping point that led to Lucifer and his friends being cast out of heaven.

I happen to believe Satan definitely had a hand in the creation of mosquitos. But that's just my personal opinion. :D

Bad comparison. To compare God to earthly parents is mixing apples with oranges. The Scriptures in Isaiah say that God's ways are higher than human ways. God's thoughts higher than our thoughts. Which means God has much more patience and love than earthly parents do.

Honoring our parents is important because they have birth to us and provided for us growing up and made sacrifices. God is a different story because he is self sufficient and doesn't have a need for any creature to give him respect and worship.

There are no consequences for verbally abusing God. There may be consequences for not honoring parents and for not obeying human government as the Bible tells us to do but with God it is different.

i actually dont really have an earthly father....or you could say i have two .....but i really dont......god is my father....and he is my parent.....i feel for him as a father..because he is the father who has not abandoned or disinherited me to not living up to expectations .......i am his child.he gave me my parents.....they were meant to guide and guard me so i can return to him...my fathers failed to guide....i live by gods guidance now........there is no comparison you are right...god is perfect in immortality, so glorious a being that we are by the way made in his image. ..we are glorious as his creations....... that god is perfect and just and forgiving reasons alone... that does not deserve abuse.....or encouraging others to blaspheme and cuss him out.....to worship him ......has nothing to do with abuse or blasphemy...its the opposite darren and you know it....we are told do not take my name in vain.....is and was his commandment..forever shall be.more than a rule....there are consequences to breaking commandments..........he has actually set rules about that...and he is my father on earth as is above..

quite a few people in the bible have said to god ...why god why have you forsaken me darren....his answer is often ye of little faith......i think cussing god out when things dotn go yoru way is more than ye of little faith...i would say ...close to none.....

i have been close to none......in really hard times and situations i have faced i have had shimmers of a voice saying you are alone he is not with you im here.........caused doubt to swell in my heart to take root and simmer into an uncomfortable knowing.....when i let go fo that doubt when i stopped saying why and truly let go...i swhen i had comfort......and it was exactly when i needed comfort the most painful violence happened after i let go...and i handled it.....but there are consequences and soem fo them will be more than you can bear...get back to me when it gets there darren...we will talk then....i hav enever cussed god.....not with that intention in my heart....nor woudl i incite others too.....its plain wrong...but you know that...having fun yet?......deb

OP, I see you as the typical christian who makes up the rules as they go along to suit their own self interest. I'm not a christian but from a third person viewpoint I do know that the words blasphemy and sacrilege are in the bible. You would do well to study the context of what took place when those sins happened.

To just ignore the bible and make up nonsense in your head and then think you are pleasing god is not being a christian.
