Broom
Anyone have a good website to find reputable therapists? What is the process and how do I vet them?
carhill
IMO, the most trusted source is referral, like from friends, business associates, a medical doctor, etc.; essentially, people with whom you have real world contact, rapport and trust and who you believe would direct you to a professional and competent therapist. When we chose to do MC, we got a referral from a client of my exW's who's a clinical psychologist. Her colleague, also a psychologist, was excellent. You might think because we got divorced he wasn't excellent; my perspective is that the therapist's work is that of bringing clarity and direction to the process and helping individuals who want help with processes and tools to solve their problems and grow their personal and relationship lives. Sometimes that means going one's separate ways, if married. In any event, outside of a local psych board, akin to a local medical board, I'd probably go by referral. Also, whatever your choice, check to see if the therapist offers a complimentary interview. Some do. It's kind of like a lawyer offering a complimentary first meeting to decide whether or not the client wishes to retain them. Get a feel for the person and then make a decision. Good luck! Ashbash11
I agree with the "get a referral" idea.. however, if you are looking to just find someone online, Psychology Today has a pretty good therapist referral webpage. They list all of the therapists in your area, their training/other information. I would check that out. Go to their main website and click on "Find a Therapist."
