Just wanted to vent about how annoying the business model of these sites are - taking of advantage of peoples hopes of meeting a partner.

I cancelled my Match subscription last month but stupidly did not turn off the notifications on my phone- I just got a notification that a girl is apparently interested in me. The site and the app will not tell you anything about these people just that there is interest however my phone notification gives me the username so I can check who is online and see who the user is who is apparently interested. Usually these notifications are from girls who fall way outside of my preferences, typically the other end of the country, or way too old or really badly overweight so its nothing to be bothered about.

Tonight I got a declaration of interest (first time I have had one of those, I think in match terms thats better than a view, a like or a favourite- basically one step short of an actual opening message) from a girl nearby who fits my preferences and is actually reasonably attractive....so what do I do? I can feel myself itching to sign up and burn another £30 but I have OLD'ed long enough to no longer believe in unicorns. Its more than likely a scam or if the account is legit then the user is just trolling for lolz. Its a common thing to be winked at by a girl, message her and get no reply. Whats all that about? I just can't justify giving them another months worth of fees when my previous two months yielded absolutely nothing.

So I am going to leave it, but it does make me annoyed that there are people parting with their money in situations like this because a lack of love and affection in their lives has driven them to be desparate and gullible and that there are companies whose business model ruthlessly seeks to exploit this.

I canceled my match subscription too. In the three months I was on it, I think about 30 guys "liked" me. In the two or three weeks after I canceled, about 150 did. It was so obvious that they set it up that way to make me come back because what if one of these guys is the man of my dreams? I am sure if I had come back to see these guys who now "like" me all of a sudden, it would have either been guys completely out of my range or lots of hidden profiles.

Ive got a notification about something like 150 views, but what they are doing is counting every view since the account was opened so a lot of those I know about andnthey arent relevant. So yeah they definitely massage the truth for unpaid users. I suspect they schill you with fake accounts as well to entice you back. Its so shady.

The like thing is another aspect of how false those sites are- a like means nothing and isnot a selling point at all. In fact I have yet to hear of someone who hit it off on Match based on an initial declaration of interest that was not an opening message. You get a like or a wink, send a message in response and get nothing back- what was the point?!

fyi - eharmony is similar. i get matches that haven't used the site in "over a month" and people who sign up for their free trials but never actually subscribe. same thing on all of the sites. when they say "we have over X million users" they just mean they have X million emails in their database. and each user probably has 3+ emails, so... the sites are not that flush with users and even fewer paid ones, imo

I've been to many of these silly dating sites and they all seem to do the same stuff. Fortunately, I did run across a completely free dating site called POF (a.k.a. PlentyOfFish). Obviously there are benefits to subscribing to them, but you don't have to. You can freely message people as much as you like and get the whole "perfect match" survey stuff that the other sites do. The only things that paying the site does (that I've noticed) is that the system puts you on higher priority to get noticed and knowing when your messages are read.

Hope you guys have fun with this site. ;)

That is how paid OLD sites work. As soon as you cancel, they dangle a nice looking bait to get you back. It's really all code and algorithms that run, attempting to lure you back in, when in reality the person they are displaying to you never even showed any interest. Paid OLD is just like any scam, it preys on people's misfortunes and weaknesses.

Funny how the likes pile up the second you cancel. Months with not a result, and then suddenly....

And they only recently started to debate whether or not it should be legal. Blatant false advertising, and they get away with it because in our plugged in and isolated culture, way too many people think there is no other option.
