BigB
I've been smoking on and off since high school (26 now) I've had time where I did really good for several years, other time where I'm smoking a pack a day. I'm starting to think that my smoking is more unattractive at this age than is was when I was younger, and that quitting will greatly improve my dating prospects. Recently I've decided that I really need to start dating and perusing a relationship. it's been almost 7 years since my last, and it ended badly, with no closure. (she skipped town) for the first 5 years or so I wasn't interested in dating, never pursued any girls I liked, and didn't put much attention toward being "available". I have a bad habit of not socializing and just being a loner. I was stuck in this mind set that no girl would want me.. (still am a little, but now I fight it) for the last couple years I've really been trying to improve this, I lost some weight(about 60 lbs), started going out with my friends more, talking to girls, etc. and other than one major setback (motorcycle accident, almost 1 year off my feet, gained back 20lbs) I've been doing well. I've still yet to get any dates, but I'm trying... I dunno, I guess I just need some motivation... When my last GF said she wouldn't date me if I was smoking I quit cold turkey on the spot without a problem. For that last week or so I've been thinking about this girl I like, and I've stopped for several days at a time. I get all psyched up to ask her out, but my mood bounces between really positive, and then really negative. When I get all negative I instantly start smoking again... Man, my last GF sure trashed my self confidence.... I used to meet girls without even trying, now I'm scared to call them...
HokeyReligions
Try the Commit lozenge -- I know some people who said that really helped. Your motivation should be for YOU and your health, not to please or attract others.
Author BigB
I do want to quit for me... I guess I'm just trying to boost my self confidence at the same time, thus helping me quit. I had the weird idea to go buy some really nice cologne, and always remind myself how much better I smell when I'm not smoking... I tried the patch before, but it made me feel really weird, so I stopped. I've never seen this lozenge before. I'll check it out.
moimeme
Remember this - smoking constricts the blood vessels, including those in your penis. After enough years, it will have trouble saluting. If that's not good enough to scare you into quitting, I don't know what could be.

He's active waaaay more times a day than I need him to be... meh, he's probably just mad at me for not meeting any girls in the last 7 years... I'm going to pickup some of these lozenges, or some gum, in the morning. I think the patch didn't work because I don't smoke on a regular schedule, sometimes my first smoke isn't until 3-4 in the afternoon. So putting the patch on in the morning made me feel weird. I also don't smoke for entire days a couple times a week when I'm around my family, so I don't think it'll be to hard this time... I don't get much withdrawal, It's mostly mental... billybadass36
I've quit smoking twice in my life. Zyban really worked for me because for one reason or another it made cigs taste funny. Anyway, that's not what actually made me successful in quitting smoking, but rather it was the positive thinking I was doing...telling myself that I'm a nonsmoker...that i don't smoke, etc., whenever confronted with a smoking situation put me ovver the top. Get past the first week, and you're halfway there. Good luck.
ready2moveon26
We sound a lot alike, I've also smoked on and off since high school, but I did have a span of about three years that I didn't smoke and I dont know what made me start up again. It was SO much easier to quit the last times. I've smoked now for about 2 years and can't seem to quit either. My OBGYN prescribed Wellbutrin and it does make the cigarettes taste very bad and I don't really want one when I've taken a pill. The problem I have is everyone around me smokes. They have no desire to quit and I am not going to push them to do something they don't really want to do, so I am on my own with this, but they will not hesitate to light up in front of me either, which in turn makes me want one. Like you, I also have spurts, I can go from smoking a pack a day, to smoking 2 cigarettes a day. It is very odd. Have you seen a doctor for this?

I asked my doctor about this maybe a year ago, she suggested some pills (I don't recall which ones) but they cost $100, and I didn't have the cash at the time. After that I was preparing for a law enforcement job, working out a lot, and I pretty much quit for about 6-8 months. Then I crashed my motorcycle, and I started up again during my recovery. I've got more $$ now, but no health insurance... Once I get that worked out, I'll go see my Dr. about these pills. In the meantime, I'll keep trying on my own. I've gone about 2 days without smoking, then I get bored at work (security guard on the night shift) and I start up again.
