Is it ok to wash your hair everyday???

See my hair is drying out BIG TIME..and well I cut my blow drying and hair straightening to only on the weekends but thats not helping. I have semi wavy, kinda straight, kinda curly hair. Not really either one kinda in the middle somewhere. But I need to style it if not I look like a huge puff ball. Especially if I blowdry and just brush it out..omg tina turner over here. But yeah its drying out!! My tips are breaking all the way up to my roots.

I use the hot oil treatments...not working.

My roomate has awesome hair and she washes her hair everyday and lets it airdry. I heard that washing your hair everyday though is bad???

So anyways I never ever let it air dry anyways..I would wash my hair like on Sunday night, blowdry it and straighten it, until about Wednesday where I would pull it up in a pony tail or messy do for the remainder of the week until Sunday and start the process all over again.

Lately though trying to moisturize my hair, during the week I wash it every two days, put oil in it (that frizz ease stuff) and some conditioner and let it air dry unless Im going out that I have to blow dry it. It feels a little better now but its still so dryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy... like crunchy dry man..The only day it looks nice is the day after I blowdry it and that lasts ONE day!!

So anyways my question is...will washing my hair everyday and leaving conditioner in it and airdrying it help the dryness????

Or have any of you ladies tried anything that worked in moisturizing your hair?

Yeah, quit washing every day. It's a complete waste of valuable time that you could be snoozing too.

I was an obsessive washer....every single day...shampoo, conditioner, blow dry and straighten. It wasn't until I read that Jessica Simpson washes her hair every third day that I decided to try it. I slept in late and showered, but left my hair alone. I don't use many products anyway. I can now go anywhere from 2-3 days without washing my hair and I love it. I'll wear my hair down the day I shampoo, then up it goes for the second or third day.

It allows me to sleep later and not have to be hassled EVERY DAY with the blow dryer. Heat is not good for your hair!!!

Some cheap salons will deep condition your hair once a month for like $10.00. They even have this chocolate smelling stuff they can put on your hair...lol....yum!

I had this problem going on with my hair for awhile last year and tried everything. I've got it to a science now, but I'm still dreading the humid summer months, because my hair will frizz nasty at the slightest sign of moisture. Sounds like we have the same type of hair - wavy, but not straight, and frizzy if not styled.

I only wash my hair every other day, and I've been doing this for about a year. I've seen a huge improvement. Taking a multivitamin every day is also important, and I'm guilty of always forgetting, but if you're diligent in taking one, you'll see a difference in the amount of breakage.

I use Biolage on my hair, and I shampoo and condition with that every other day. Once a week, I use their intense conditioning treatment that comes in the tub as opposed to the bottle, and I leave it on a good five minutes.

I never let my hair air dry. If I do, it's scary. I use a very hot ionic blowdryer. To me the ions make a HUGE difference and I use a BioIonic paddle brush to blow dry my hair straight. I've no idea why people use round brushes to straighten hair. A paddle brush works so much better. There's less pull on the hair because it's not working itself in a circle. I use that little plastic thing you put on the end of the dryer to direct the air right on the hair, so the dryer doesn't get to close and burn the hair.

The hotter the blowdryer, the straighter my hair and less frizz. I then lightly use a flat iron on my hair, but I only go over it once or twice and fast. The straighter I can get it with the dryer, the less damage caused by the iron.

Oh, I also use Simply Straight on my hair. Works good for me. Try getting your hair trimmed as often as you can. Every 4-6 weeks get your butt to a salon and trim off that dead hair.

One more thing I don't think people realize kills their hair. Tanning beds will fry your hair like you wouldn't believe. When I use them I wrap my head in a towel, and I've saved a lot of damage.

I wash my hair every other day.

My hair dresser told me that anything you do to your hair damages it, colouring using product. blow drying , etc.

The less you can do to it the better.

Even pulling it into elastics breaks the hair.

Can you go to your hair dressser for some advice?

Lonestar...I have the same type of hair as you do too!

It takes me five minutes to blow-dry my hair. My stylist takes almost 20. She seperates each section and fries my hair so much that there's literally smoke coming from my hair (I guess from the products). Yeah, my hair is nice and all, but let's be real. Who has that time/energy? It's not realistic for my lifestyle.

You only want to blow-dry your hair to 90% dryness. I've read too to NOT brush your hair while it's wet, that it splits the hair or something. But that's hard when you're trying to blowdry it straight!!!

Thank you Lonestar. I have exactly that hair not really curly and not straight and FRIZZY if I don't style it!

Yup now with this warm weather in Florida my hair is going crazy!!!

But I never thought about the tanning bed thing. My apartment complex where I lived before had one which I could use for free so i was in there a lot and thats around the time my hair started doing really bad!! That and the fact I dye and highlight it!

So biolage is good huh? Does it smell nice? I need it to smell nice lol. And I'm off to buy a straight brush right now. You know I always used a straight brush and my hair was perfect but then I started using the round one because my stylist used it and my friends did too and so I switched. But it makes sense with my dry hair and split ends using a round brush will only make it worse by twirling a pulling it!!! Ahhh lol

I also use an ionic blowdryer and oil when I use the hairstraightner! Maybe thats why my hair hasn't fallen completly off..lol

But wow yeah from now on Towel over hair in tanning booth, straight brush, and biolage. Sounds like a plan!

I wash my hair every day. I have really silky thick hair that is kind of curly, kind or straight, kind of wavy. Sometimes I wash it twice a day, but the second time I just use conditioner.

How is your diet? Because I think strong hair and nails has to do with vitamins and minerals. Do you take a daily multivitamin? If not, you should. Especially if you drink a lot of water, because that can really wash out the water soluble vitamins.

I also use TIGI "control freak" products on my hair, and I air dry...if I do blow dry I never dry it all the way, only until it's not soaking wet. And my friend's sister, who is a hair dresser, taught me about using straightening balm just on my bangs, and gel everywhere else, and I put the gel in when my hair is alllllllmost dry. It seems to work ok.

But then some days when it wants to go curly I just encourage the curl.

EC I have very similar hair to you. I dont wash it every day because it has a tendency to dry out based on what I do to it. I just got my hair cut this weekend and I was talking to my stylist and she mentioned that a lot of products have more alcohol in them that you may realize. The alcohol really dries out your hair. I either have to wear my hair up or I have to dry it and straighten which ads to it drying out.

My best suggestion is get a good conditioner for dry, damaged or color treated hair. Try blow drying on low heat when you are going to straighten it to keep it from getting too dry.

Hope that helps.

Try Sally Beauty Supplies if you have one of those.

Tiki, I won't let my stylist dry my hair for that very reason. It only takes me 10 minutes to dry my hair using a ionic blowdyer. For some reason it dries the hair faster, and they take way too long in the salons. The end result is never as straight as I get it anyway. I do dry my hair bone dry though, because that's the only way for me to get it straight without having to rely so much on the iron. I've found that the iron burns my hair more so than a blow dyer.

Still regular cuts, vitamins, not washing daily, and protecting hair in tanning beds is the key.

i have to wash my hair every day or i'll feel a little funky. sometimes i shower 2 times a day as well. I usually shower at 6am, go to work, go tanning, then come home and shower for the night.

Pantene ProV works wonders for any type of hair. the stuff is a little expensive but its wonderful. also- i blow dry and straighten my hair a lot too and BioSilk is this silky gel you run thru ur hair after its dry. it makes it shiney, and silky- i think this works better than those hot oil treatments.

also i read in a magazine, right before your about to turn the water off in the shower, blast your hair with COLD water for a couple of seconds, and leave a little bit of conditioner left in ur hair when ur done showering.. also try to keep up with a haircut every couple of weeks and you should be good!!

lol I tried walking into a sally's beauty supply store and I was dizzy with all the products they had.

I mean they all say how beautiful they can make your hair!! Hows a girl to choose.

BO I have tried the straightening balm and it left my hair feeling really weird? and kinda dryer when I straightened it..So one day I had to leave my hair curly and I had no gel so I used the hair straightening balm as gel and it was the best thing I have ever used for curly hair. No frizz, didnt harden and it left beautiful curls lol I have used it ever since for when I want my hair curly.

But I have really chubby cheeks so I hate wearing my hair curly because I feel fatter in the face lmao :o:p

I have tried blow drying on low but I have sooooooo much hair that it takes me already an hour almost to blowdry and straighten it on high imagine on low heat..I would be there forever!!!

I really have to go get my tips cut though..its been about two months..but everytime I go my hair is sooo long like I want it and my stylist chops off like two inches!!! She says I need it but then the two inches grow back and she cuts them off again. My hair will never pass the same dang length! I also haven't dyed it in two months so my roots are like down to my ears! Not cute!

I was thinking of just dying it dark my natural color so that I wont have to contsantly keep dying it and highlihting it..but my bf hates it like that And dammit I look hot with highlights! lol

Oh why is looking good so hard and yet it comes so damn easy for some girls. They just wake up and look good!

Pomade works wonders.

Cool shot under the water - like the other poster mentioned. And my dryer has a cool shot button too. The cold supposedly sets it.

And don't keep using the same shampoo and conditioner over and over. ALTERNATE!!!

Try nicer (more expensive) products.

I have long hair (I just cut about six inches off so I don't quite sit on it anymore, but its still long)

I also color my hair to get rid of the grey.

In the summer I swim everyday (ooh, chemicals)

My hair is wavy in some places and downright curly in others, while straight in yet other areas.

I live in Houston -- sauna to the world in the summer!

My hair tends to dry out easily, but it's pretty healthy. My scalp is oily and its hard for me to go more than two days without washing my hair because then I'm brushing the oil into my hair and instead of it moisturizing my hair, it just makes it look greasy and it's hard to manage.

I use Mane & Tail (for horses actually!) and I use a product similar to Pantene but I found it in the health food store. It contains Pantenol.

I use V05 -- a tiny little dot gently finger combed through my hair.

I use a straightener on my hair every other day. I finally let my bangs grow out enough so I don't have to blow dry them---I can straighten them with the iron now.

Every other month I soak my hair in baby-oil. The months in-between I soak my hair in warm olive oil.

It sounds like a lot, but its really not. I wash my hair, put the pantenol conditioner in for two minutes, rinse, comb my hair (a wide tooth comb) and let it air dry--I wash it the night before and I put it up in a braid before I actually go to bed. In the morning I brush it and put that tiny dot of V05 in it (mostly on the ends) and straighten it. The olive oil / baby oil treatment is something I do on the weekends when I'm home -- once a month! I color my hair 2-3 times a year and never within four weeks of the oil treatment.

For dry hair, try V05 first. Start with just a pin-point dab and rub in into your hands before you smooth it into your hair. It really does help--especially with summer frizzies!

Yeah, so many women have no idea what tanning beds do to your hair, especially for those of us who highlight. I take a towel with me and wrap my head in a turban the same way I do when I get out of the shower. Those beds will suck every bit of moisture out of your hair.

I love Biolage, smells real good too and it's been around for awhile. I think you can only get it in salons, but I recently saw it in my local CVS. It's a Matrix product, and it's been around for awhile.

I used V05 but I guess I used to much and it left my hair oily. So I tried using the Bio silk stuff and its been working ok.

HOKEY..that baby oil or olive oil thing you do....How does that work?

Tiki's right. The cool shot on the dryers do help set the hair and reduce frizzies.

Both my bf and I have very long hair. He doesn't have to do anything to his--it always looks good, lucky b*stard!

I second using hot oil treatments or putting on some kind of conditioning cream. Or when you have time, run conditioner totally through dry hair until it's saturated, cover your hair with a plastic shower cap and wrap a towel around your head for an hour or so, then wash your hair.

If your hair gets tangled, Aussie's Knot Forgotten is a good leave in detangler that makes combing your hair a lot easier.

I used too much V05 at first too and looked like I poured sticky oil on my head! A little goes a very loooong way.

I will heat some olive oil in a pan (just till it's warm, not hot) and pour it into a plastic tub and just lower my hair into it until I can't lower my head anymore and then slowly lift out of it and just pour the rest onto my hair and gently work it in with my fingers. Then I pile my hair on my head and put a shower cap on for about 15 - 20 minutes and then I wash my hair as usual.

When I use babyoil I just fill a sink with hot water and stick the bottle in until it's warm, then squirt it on my hair -- especially the ends and then braid it and keep it up all night long. I'll wear a shower cap so that I don't get babyoil on anything else and in the morning I'll wash my hair as usual. It's usually completely absorbed by morning and doesn't feel really slick oily anymore and my hair is so soft after either one of these 'treatments'. I don't know why I started alternating or why I even use two different 'treatments'??? [hokey scratches her head as she wonders just why she does the things she does]

I *think* the baby-oil works better in the summer because of the pool chemicals and sun and the olive oil works better when the cold weather dries my hair out. Some how I evolved into an every other month kinda thing because I really don't know which (if either) works better or for what reason.

Is it time to go home yet?

lol HOKEY!

I have baby oil I think...Im going to have to try that...hey it can't hurt right and you still have all your hair!! lol

My grandmother used to soak my hair in mayonnaise and it smells so bad and I would go to school smelling like a sandwich!

But hey my hair looked good lol :p

My hair used to be really dry and frizzy too...now my hair is really healthy. I started drinking TONS of water. I also bought a new hairdryer called T3 which you can get at Sephora. It is really expensive but it's made such a big difference. Another thing that I swear by is Kerastase hair products. These products are also really very expensive but once you use it, you won't wanna use anything else. It makes your hair feel like butter. Use ceramic hair tools as well.

I have pin straight hair that is thin and i wash ever few days too it helps....when i shower everyday I just put a dab of conditioner in on the days i dont shampoo so i can get my brush through it....other than that fructis has an awsome smelling and inexpensive oil type balm in a pump that smells great and helps with straightning and brushing through wet hair

It may be your shampoo that is contributing to the dryness - most drugstore brands either contain ammonium sulfates or sodium lauryl sulfate, which are harsh and drying. I seriously thought this was a tale made up by salons to sell their products, but I switched to a gentler shampoo and it really made a difference. I use Apple Pection shampoo from Sally's - $7.99 for a large bottle, good value. I rotate in Back to Basics Marine shampoo (the one for colored hair) occasionally. Both are gentle and won't strip my color. Coloring is another thing which really dries out my hair - I found a shade by Clairol Balsam color that I really like, but it's the harshest color I have used. Very cheap, though, and lasts a long time. Anyway, I'm trying to get back my original shade and then stop coloring altogether. I wash every other day instead of every day, which does make a difference. My second day hair is kind of flat and dull, but it's too hard on my hair and scalp to do the everyday washing. I also use some kind of conditioner or detangler on my ends before blowdrying - it's trial and error finding the right one...

Farouk Silk Therapy, it's expensive but it's the best thing you can do for your hair. It's not like one of those shine lotions that all it does is laquer your hair shaft, it actually penetrates the folicle and repairs it.

I hate not shampooing every day, Due to my color treatment I have to cut way down on it. You can still wet and condition your hair every day, and scrub your scalp.

Or, if you must shampoo only use a wee bit and only do the roots.

Use a salon shampoo and conditioner, and buy some silk therapy by ferouk. Going in for a trim might help too.

On non shampoo days (hate them) I will blow dry as it helps stop greasy looking roots.

Tanning not only dries your hair out, but will discolour it, especially if you're a blonde. Can get a bandanna or something.

Everyone has their "hair routine" that works for them, it's trial and error to find yours.

Sometimes I cheat and I will shampoo every day, just because I like it. But I'll only use a little, on the roots. I can't stand the "scalp smell" of unshampooed hair.

Changing from winter to spring/summer will also bring about changes (unless you live close to the equator ) in hair and skin.
