Depends on the type job and the place. I can put in requests a few days ahead. My brother has to put his in at least a month ahead at his job.

Most places I have worked it is no problem. Usually the sooner the notice the better, especially if you need several days off at a time. I work in a 9-5 office environment. However, when I worked retail, it was a much different story. Nothing was guaranteed even if you asked in advance, but there was usually a 2 week notice period at minimum for requests.
