I think I'm going about my job all wrong.

Recommended Posts

The last time I got a raise, the boss said, "You fill in when needed, and you get your work done on time, and when you're in a crunch, you always pull through..."

That inspired me to be available to fill in when needed, to get my work done fast, and to always make it happen in a crunch.

But I'm wondering if that's the best way to go.....

My manager is an IDIOT. If you ask her for help...even for something simple, like telling you what account to stick a payment in, she makes it TEN TIMES HARDER. Meaning she wastes ten minutes or more trying to help you, then she can't help you, and tells you to ask someone else, but "let her know so she'll know next time" and write a report on it, and this and that....or, she'll tell you what to do, and it'll be wrong, and screw you up WAY MORE.

So now, NO ONE, not even CUSTOMERS ask her for ANYTHING.

I'm very helpful. If someone asks me a question, I usually know. If I don't know, I usually know who WILL know. Or, I can find out the answer.

So people come to me for help. I'm very helpful.

Also, if someone gives me a project, I usually make it top priority. I'll do it first, to get it out of the way so they're not asking me for it every five minutes.

If you give my manager a project, you might as well forget you even gave it to her.

So no one asks her for help, because she's useless, and no one gives her any extra work, because she always has the excuse that she's waaaaaaaaaay to busy to be bothered with any more work.

So since I'm willing and available to fill in, I get asked to fill in ALL THE TIME. Since I'm so helpful, people are buggine me for help ALL THE TIME, and since I do projects that my boss, or anyone else gives to me FIRST so I'm not bothered by them later, people give me extra work ALL THE TIME.

Am I stupid? Yes, these are the qualities that a person hiring is looking for, but it's not helping me much at all!

The MANAGER never gets asked for anything, yet a little peon like me is bugged to DEATH!

So this project that my boss just gave me....I'm putting it on the back burner. She wants it done today...I might muddle to it tomorrow.

Maybe next time, she'll realize how busy I really am, and not bug me with tasks that she could do herself

true, it maybe a piddley waste of time, this project your direct supervisor gave you. but as a fellow peon, i have been told, that my bosses time is more valuable than my own, therefore as a peon, we get shoddy work that no one wants to do.

be very flexiable, and able to fill in, like you are, can be a double edged blade. while it is great that you are such an super assistant, yuou do get stuck doing others work, that you do not always get recognized for or even paid for.

experience is great, but it usually comes as volunteer work.

the reward for doing a good job is more work...

apply the reverse to your boss.

Well THAT plan didn't work  I decided to let the project my boss gave me wait (My boss...not my manager...the owner is my boss...my manager is such an idiot that I don't respect her enough to ever listen to her unless I ABSOLUTELY have to.) My boss seems to think that I have sooooooooo much free time that I can make copies for her, run errands for her, clean files for her, bla bla bla bla bla...

and it's all my fault, because the boss brings her daughter around a lot, and I JUST CAN'T WORK when this adorable nine year old is in my office begging for my attention, so I just play with her daughter all day when she brings her daughter. I feel like if she's so unprofessional as to bring kids to an office, then I'm not going to fight myself to get work done around these kids....

which is counterproductive, because it LOOKS like I have nothing to do,when in reality I just can't concentrate enough to do anything.

But back to the point. I put the project on the back burner. She came to me right after my lunch and said, "DO YOU HAVE THAT DONE YET!?!? I NEED THAT CHECK NOW!!"

So I went in and rushed through what I HAD to do, and got the check to her. Then, she wanted me to finish another part of the project PRONTO because it was veeeeeeeeery important.

So that plan was just shot all to heck  She only give me important MUST DO NOW BECAUSE IT'S ALREADY LATE projects to do
