Should I quit my part time job

Recommended Posts

So I have been working for the same retail company for close to 5 years now. I started right before I left for college and they let me continue through my college years. When I was in school, I would come home occasionally on a weekend and work for them, until the summer time, when I would work all summer long. They were very flexible and they like me a lot, thus I have stuck with them for 5 years. They always take me back and as long as I work once every 12 weeks, I am okay to continue working there whenever I would like. I did work in another location near my college, same store, while I was in school, but they were not nice to me and it was not a professional environment. I went back to my home store as soon as I could.

What I am having an issue with now, is that I am done with college. I went back to work at the store all summer long. In December I was offered a full time job down near my college, of which I have now been working at for 3 months. My work was fine with me leaving, but they think I am on a school schedule again, and will be coming back for the summer. I am getting close to my 12 week mark where I will need to work again. I can go home on some weekend and work a shift, but after working 40 hours a week all week, its nice to go home, sleep, and see my family.

I am unsure about what to do. I have been thinking of quitting. But I also don't want to lose my discount I get at the store. I am so conflicted. A little extra money would be nice too, but I barely work a one 5 hour shift only makes me maybe 100 bucks, which is nothing now compared to my salary.

I don't know if I should quit, or keep it up for many more months. My mother thinks I should keep it as long as I can. But its so nice to go home and not have to work, and to be home with my family. I don't know what to do? I have been there for so long, 5 years is a long time for a small part time job. But people move on. I understand that. I have noticed my boss hiring more high school kids because she knows she has them for a long time now. Maybe its my time to move on. I would love to go back and work for the same store down here, but I hated the way I was treated. They weren't nice and understanding like my boss at home. I thought about getting something part time down here, but most places are going to want my every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which is not flexible. At least at home they let me work a four hour shift on a Saturday, which is more simple. Maybe I am being lazy and not wanting to do it.

I don't quite understand why you're so conflicted about this. You've graduated and you have a full-time job. There's not much need to cling to the PT retail job in another location that you held through your college years.

It sounds like the money's not great at this PT job, and it's become a major inconvenience. Are there really any huge incentives to keep it?

I get a sizeable discount on clothes which is really nice. I do all my Christmas and birthday shopping because of this. But at this point I make a decent amount of money from my full time that I could probably shop anywhere I want.

Since you can support yourself on the FT job, quit the PT job. Give them plenty of notice because they were so loyal to you over the years.

Sounds like a comfort thing, after all these years. And after getting employee discounts for so long, it will be hard to transition to "normal customer" with this company.

Still, the job doesn't seem to make sense anymore, so probably time to ditch it and move on.

You have a full time job now and are done with college. It's time to quit the other job and give your all to what is now your career job. 5 hours here and there may not seem like a lot, but after a 40 hour workweek and only one day off, you might suffer from a burnout which might affect performance at your other job. I know you've been there a long time, so leaving might seem saddening, but it is time to move forward with other endeavors. Such meager hours working aren't worth it, especially when taxes take a nice portion of that small salary. If you have the means to support yourself on the 40 hour workweek, there isn't any reason to continue this other job. I'd say it's not necessary to give more than a 2 week notice for the amount of work you're getting here. These types of jobs can hire and train someone with minimal skills within that 2 week timeframe.
