ASDot
I meet with a lawyer tomorrow, and I guess STBXH does too now. He just asked for our checking account number and the car title? What do I do? It's his fault for not knowing the account number, I'm sure he has a little card somewhere. I just think it's odd he wants the title to the car?
contact1
It's probably to provide to the lawyer so that they can review over the financial assets. The checking account number, well if he really wanted to take money out of it, he could do so by just going to the bank if it is in his name, so I don't think it would be him trying to get everything out. As far as the car title, yea could possibly be trying to sell it quickly but hard to say. If you are really wherry about it, just tell him you don't know where it is and you will look for it tomorrow after having talked to your lawyer. Your lawyer would be the best one to answer this question, since they would know your whole situation, not a bunch of random people on the internet.
Author ASDot
Thanks for the reply. I just freaked out for a minute sorry. I'm still having a hard time believing this is happening. And I only ask random people on the Internet because I have absolutely nobody else in my life to ask.
CarrieT
I just think it's odd he wants the title to the car? Don't just hand it over. He might sell it and keep the money. Tell your lawyer what your STBX is asking for and let him advise on it. Start protecting your assets.
Arieswoman
I agree with what others have said, do nothing without taking advice from your lawyer first, that's what you're paying them for. Good luck.
PegNosePete
Yes, since your lawyer appointment is so close I would simply buy time until then. Just tell your STBX that you are busy right now but will find the information he needs and reply later on. Then the lawyer should be able to give you advice on what to do. Survivor12
One of the first things to do when facing impending divorce is to make copies of all financial documentation--titles, credit card & bank account statements, lease agreements, loans, mortgage information, past year tax returns, insurance policies, etc. Also, make a list (or take pictures) of all personal property. If your name is on the title, your signature is required to transfer it so be sure to get a copy before you give it to him as a precaution. It's also advisable to get your name off of all joint credit accounts as soon as possible. (Get a copy of your credit report to make sure you haven't missed any.) Finally, keep in mind that a divorce, in many ways, is a business negotiation so it's best to keep emotion out of it as much as possible. Good luck.
