I am going to be leaving my full time job of nearly three years, and I'm not sure how many weeks/months before your leave you should tell your boss? Also, what day is the best to do it?

i believe rule of thumb is you should give them 2 weeks notice

Standard notice is a full 2 wks. If you really like your employer and boss then give them 3 wks notice but keep in mind that with the extra week they may make you do more work such as training someone new or documenting the work that you did or making a manual.

Depends on your industry and what you do. In some fields they escort you out the door the minute you give notice.

Another common rule of thumb (not that alphamale is wrong) is that you should give notice equivelant to your annual vacation allowance.

Depends on your industry, responsibility, specific role, how they have treated you, etc. Ask around.

Two weeks is a serious standard. If you always give 2 weeks, nobody can criticize you for it. I would consider 3-4 weeks for a high level job. If your manager has always been fair with you, and the company is ethical, you can give longer notice. But if they are a bunch of pirates, maybe 5 minutes notice is plenty.

I would think, SOLEMATE, that if one was in with a bunch of pirates then your notice would be about half a second. This would be the time it takes u to hit the water after u jump off the side of the ship.

thanks guys, I think i'll give them 2 months notice since they do treat me good and my job will require some time to train somebody new....Also, what day is the best? Monday? Friday?

Definitely Monday. Start of a new week, rather than a chance to brood over the weekend.
