Going solo?

Recommended Posts

I posted this in another response but thought maybe it could be a whole new thread.

Being single again, I'm trying to use all my free time to experience new things and do what I want. However, the trouble I'm finding now that I'm a little older - 31 - that finding friends to do things with is quite harder - a lot of my friends right now are married, babies, or in serious relationships. Even my work friends are older and we go out maybe once every few months. Blah. It's not as easy as it was getting together.

So it's time for me to go out and do things on my own - any suggestions or ideas from other singles out there?

Since you're in Western New York there are things to do, but it depends on what you want to do.

For example, in Rochester you have:

George Eastman House, which has daily showings of a variety of non-mass market and old movies

The Little Theathers, which shows new, artsy movies that normally won't be shown in the mass market theaters

the Ferry which should be starting up in May for day trips to Toronto

RIT & UofR have a lot of things going on

Rochester's science museum & planetarium

In Buffalo you have:

ArtPark if you're interested in concerts and Arts & Crafts taught/demoed by local artists

the Buffalo Bisons if you like baseball

Albright-Knox art gallery - World reknown collection

SUNYAB Downtown & Amherst - A lot of various concerts and things going on

In any event I recommend Off the Beaten Path (A book about various things around NYS)

The 2005 NYS Tourism Guide - A LOT of things going on broken down by region & county

Hit up the Buffalo & Rochester City web pages. A good place to learn of festivals (Like Rochester's Flower festival) and other events

There's a lot more (I grew up in East Aurora, went to college in Syracuse, and still travel back to Buffalo on a regular basis) but that's a tiny portion of things singles can go & do.

Have you checked for events in your community? Most communities have events that are focused towards singles in the area.

I'll have to chk the paper - I feel weird going alone though - oh well - i'll see what's available

I always hear about some single nights events at hotels and stuff on the radio - where they have diff things such as speed dating and whatever, but I feel weird going I guess - I'd feel better with a partner in crime lol

Oh well - I guess I should just get over it and try something out - can't hurt anything.

I'll probably go hang out with my gay guy friends this weekend - that usually doesn't help me out either - lol - but we have fun -

Eh. Just learn to do things alone. It's not so bad. I like it.

Funny thing, though, my friends are getting younger and younger.....

lol - yeah I'm a wuss

I do a lot of stuff alone - it just gets hard for me on the weekends i guess - especially at night - I guess during the winter it doesn't bother me so much but now that it's getting nice out - I'm dying to go out and have some fun - go have a few drinks, see a band, whatever - and I won't meet any new friends sitting my ass at home watching movies, im'ing with im friend (that's another post - lol), reading stuff on ls - plus I get cabin fever

I do go out with my friends - it's just a little harder now for people to get together on a regular basis or they are acting like old married couples - a few months back an old friend from high school moved back into town and we were out 3-4 times a week until she fell hard for this guy and haven't heard from her in a month - blah I hate that - so I got use to it and miss it so to say

Yeah - I made a couple younger friends while I was taking some classes - my family always jokes that I still think I'm 21 - I tell them I may be 31 but don't feel like it -

Well anywho - maybe if nothing is going on tonight or tomorrow night I'll find a band to go watch and have a few drinks - alone - eeks - wish me luck - yeah I'm a wiener
