DatingDirection
I've been seeing a psychologist. We've been doing thought records, and at the end of the thought record I feel as though im sugar coding every thought or belief I have about situations in my life. I also feel as though doing a thought record is a way to put rose coloured glasses on, to cover up the reality of the situation. In some situations I feel it may be helpful, but in other situations, I feel it's just not helpful. I'm trying to understand where my thoughts come from, and how I can change them. However, sometimes it's not always about changing them, it's about accepting what's happened, and unlearning the patterns of behavior. I'm talking about this in the context of childhood trauma. Does CBT really work or is it bull****? if it is balony, then what is an alternative to do in thearapy. The thearipist wants me to practise balanced thoughts. But reality is reality. Am I right or wrong?
whichwayisup
CBT is amazing. And it works. What you put into therapy is what you get out of it. The thing is, if you aren't connecting with your psychologist, you don't have the trust, then find someone else.
melodicintention
CBT took me from afraid to go eat alone at Taco Bell to clubbing in LA and Miami Beach 100% alone without a thought in about a years time. Yes it works, it's works extremely well, but you have to WANT it to work. There is no therapy that can compare, no pill, nothing that works as well as CBT. Baby steps till you reprogram your brain to no longer have an anxious reaction to stimuli, even Freud can't compare to the success CBT has had for people like me. BTW I did my own CBT, never went to a therapist once. You don't need one, you just need to learn the dymamics of CBT and you can do it yourself. Not that I'm saying to not see a doctor, but just saying in case you have a hard time finding one that gets you, try it on your own. Balanced thoughts, no idea what that means. I can tell you this. I started out afraid to eat alone. So one day I forced myself to go to a nearby restaurant that was always dead on Sunday. I was surprised that nothing weird happened! So I did it again, and again for a few sundays until I had no more anxiety when I arrived to the restaurant. Then I got big balls and started going to other restaurants on different days where there were one or 2 customers. Got over that anxiety, moved onto eating at a restaurant alone during their rush. Did that a few times, got that anxiety to lower. Next I went to a club alone, did that a few times, go that anxiety to lower. then I moved to Miami Beach and went to clubs there alone. Was scary until they let me right past the ropes, and nothing weird happened. Again, my anxiety lowered to where now I can go to any restaurant or dance club no matter how busy and I no longer have an anxious reaction. Baby steps towards my goal.
