disneyfan90
I was looking through some old family photos, and I came across one of a random girl who looked about 14 or 15, dressed in a Halloween costume. I asked my mom who she was, and she said that she stopped by for trick-or-treating. My dad thought her costume was nice so he took a picture of her lol. This was in 1984 when my dad was in his 30s. I laughed a little bit, but I also raised my eyebrows because I thought about how nowadays you could never get away taking pictures of a random person, right? It seems like people are a lot more paranoid now than they were back in the 80s. But in the picture, the girl looked perfectly happy and comfortable, and chatted with my dad for a minute or two. My dad is very nice, softhearted, friendly person. Also, this was when my parents first came to the U.S. from a totally different country, so Halloween was a foreign concept to them. I suppose they were just fascinated by the whole idea of it. What do you think? Could you ever get away with doing something like this nowadays?
Tayla
With permission from their guardians, I do not see why not. Our Halloween events are held at a Fire station for safety reasons. Kids crossing streets unsupervised and going to strangers places is frowned upon, so the community decided on a public area for celebrating. Often there are photographs and contest for the costumes. while safety and times change, some of the creative outfits are worth recognition.
DazedandConfused8
If you don't want people to see/comment on/take pictures of your Halloween costume, you don't wear it. The entire point of Halloween is to garner public attention and comments. I'm sure your dad meant nothing by it, unless you're implying he's a pedophile.

Professional photographers do it all the time......take photos of randoms......to tell them you are about to take a picture would destroy the look or special quality that is fleeting in a unique photograph its a matter of seconds...its art......and that special eye that looks from behind the lens to capture an inopportune moment or space or person.......paparazzi and horrible inopportune moments photographed are probably what have taken random photography into a no go zone...... i have had people take photos of me....caught the flash and i ask them not to do it again because i dont like my photo taken normally.....its rare i do......so luckily i guess people ignore me and take my photo anyway.....or when i go ...no one would have a picture of me.... i dont believe its something to be riled up about unless the photo is for slanderous reasons or held up to be ridiculed........deb

I was just curious to see if people do this often nowadays. It's been a while since I've worn a Halloween costume lol.

I suppose they were just fascinated by the whole idea of it. What do you think? Could you ever get away with doing something like this nowadays? What are you talking about?? These days it is the norm 1,000,000 times over for random people to be taking not-so-random photos of other people than was the case in 1984. Nearly everyone has a camera with them today... and in 1984 lots of whole families didn't even have a functioning camera, let alone film for spontaneous photos. LOL - these days, on the subway every day, you'll see some random dude sneaking some photo of some hottie across the aisle. To compare that to somebody seemingly posing for a photo on the doorstep of a house she approached, is much different. Back in 1984, also, a 14yo girl could perhaps go trick-or-treating and have a much greater expectation of her own safety than is true in 2015. And the context you provide is more than enough to suggest your father may truly have been rather in awe of the costume, and not as much the girl.
