SleekArchitecture
I read this being discussed on another thread and did not want to hijack it, but we often hear this in fiery debates and conversation. I do not hate much, but I really hate this saying. It is probably just me and my mind does not connect to it. I could never use this to make decisions for myself. This quote could be made for anything and everything in life. For example: A wonderful man wants to marry me. I am happy and am thinking about remarrying but why? If the grass is always greener on the other side, would I not want to stay single? I hear this so much with affair speak. A vent. Author SleekArchitecture
I think the grass is greenest wherever you water it. That makes sense. The grass may or may not be greener on any side in life. If you nurture something it does have a better chance in what ever decision you make. The quote just drives me crazy. A poor person shrugs and thinks the grass is greener on the other side for the rich. Well it may or may not be.

See, I've always heard/seen the phrase as: "the grass *isn't* always greener on the other side" or "they *think* the grass is greener on the other side" eluding to the "other side" is a delusion or wishful thinking or fantasy. Interesting.

Interesting. Yes, I have heard it both ways and I think it basically eludes to the same message. I do not use it so I may have quoted it wrong. I think I too have heard it more often is the grass isn't greener on the other side. Edited March 19, 2015 by SleekArchitecture
Author SleekArchitecture
I suppose what I am trying to get across, is if I live my life with the thought that the grass isn't greener on the other side I would never make any positive steps, risks, life mistakes, or improvements. I won't ever get remarried because the grass isn't greener on the other side of single. I would not want to move up a money bracket because the grass isn't greener on the other side, more money. It could go on into an abyss, infinity, or begin looping.

writergal
The grass is never greener on the other side; it's just artificial turf disguised as real grass. It's easy to envy what you think others have, until they show you what their reality is (if they show you, most rarely do). Never judge a book by its cover, and the way other people judge you is none of your business.

I understand what it means, but do not like it because people use it for their own personal agenda when giving advice as a fact when it is not. I do not like the phrase. If people followed, as a rule, no one would get married because it wouldn't be greener on the other side but they would go no no of course it doesn't apply to that, it only applies when married and someone has to choose between two people. If it could be applied universally, and without prejudice, than I would agree that it was a noteworthy quote.
Author SleekArchitecture
And it might be because I have more often than not found the grass to be greener on the other side once you get there, I do not get it. I take risks, so maybe that is the difference.

writergal
That is not true. I have to disagree. Really? Why do you disagree? Whenever someone uses that term "the grass is greener on the other side," I treat it like the fallacy that it is. It's just a myth. There is simply no truth to that statement. People use it wrong all the time, as though it's literally true. Um no. Someone's situation can look sooo much better than your own...from a distance. But the closer you are to their situation, the more clearly you can see that what appears to be great, really isn't. Most people I know, don't want to trade their own problems for someone else's. Or trade their success for someone else's success. I think people who believe this statement to be literally true, suffer from a comparison disorder; because they compare their lives to others which is just not a good idea ever. Hope Shimmers
The phrase is really not about self-improvement but more about contentment and being happy with what you have. It doesn't mean you can't work to improve what you have if you choose that route.

Yes you get it. As with anything in life, it may or may not be. With my thinking, and like I mentioned previously the quote does not connect with me. How can you tell someone the grass is not greener on the other side, when you have no idea if it is or not. It is already driving me bats.

Author SleekArchitecture
For example: A guy could be sitting playing video games in his parents basement and be thinking he is okay with it because the grass is not greener of the other side with getting a higher education, gaining a career, and moving out of mom's basement and becoming independent, because they have the stress of student loans, have to pay rent, and work. And one day he may be able to collect a government check and they won't.
waterwoman
For example: A guy could be sitting playing video games in his parents basement and be thinking he is okay with it because the grass is not greener of the other side with getting a higher education, gaining a career, and moving out of mom's basement and becoming independent, because they have the stress of student loans, have to pay rent, and work. And one day he may be able to collect a government check and they won't. Of course. There are always too sides. However I tend to think it applies best to situations were people are simply envying others or passively wishing for something was different with no real intention of acting on it. When it is used in the context you refer to, I think it has a value too. Stop, think, can you water the grass where you are BEFORE jumping the fence.
Genieve
The way I look at it as an OW . My grass appeared greener... Mm comes and plants a garden after several years it bloomed and then he started visiting his old garden and thought he'd mow the lawn there. He didn't plant flowers but he decided not to water mine ) - : so it started to suffer. But now both lawns are not green anymore? Well that's my analogy.
