Too many pets?

I once dated a woman ,though I do like animals, I think she had one too many pets for me to have to deal with. In fact she has 5 dogs and 1 cat. A bit overwhelming to say the least.

Is someone who owns too many animals a deal breaker for you?

IME, dating women who had pets, they also had kids and, in some cases it took on the feeling of a menagerie. I enjoy animals, and kids, but there are limits. I would say my boundary would be when and where our adult time was being constantly interrupted by either, either directly or indirectly.

OTOH, if a woman didn't want to date me because my old male cat travels with me generally wherever I go, I could respect that.

I don't like pets at all, having one pet wouldn't be a deal breaker, but it's not something I would like.

Having multiple pets might be enough to turn me off.

Actually, this is only true if they are in the house. I can't stand cats, but dogs that stay in the yard I would be okay with.

I love animals and have always had a pet; cats, mice, fish, even a pony. Today all I have is a beagle lady, had her since she was a puppy; she'll become 9 this year. :)

So I'm definitely not against pets per se, but it does depend on the situation. If the entire apartment is covered in hair and dirt or even feces and reeks of dogs/cats because the owner won't take the time for extra-cleaning I'm out. Or if the guy lived in a tiny apartment with a cattle-sized dog; sorry, no. I wouldn't mind a chewed on sofa though, my dog messed up our spretty bad too; we just bought blankets to cover the holes. :o

The situation could be reversed though and a guy would for example hate that I spend money on vets and care (especially once I own horses again in the future) - sorry, dealbreaker.

Ha, ha, remember one time at a LS'ers house where I ended up on the sofa with one kid sitting next to me, the other one on the floor in front of me, the dog laying on me and another cat closing in with a parrot squalling in the background. It was a bit superfluous when I told the lady that kids and animals tend to like me.

While not a dating experience, it did underscore the general boundary, essentially that I was overrun by kids and pets and it was difficult to carry on an adult conversation or have adult interaction. Sure, there's time for that kind of kid and pet play and I'm generally up for it even at my advanced age, within limits ;)

If it was to the point where the house couldn't be kept clean due to all the animal fur and waste, then yes, that would be too much. But someone who didn't like or wouldn't own pets would be MORE of a dealbreaker.

I have 4 dogs (only normally have 2 with me), 3 horses and a bunch of chickens...

Next weekend I will have 7 dogs with me... and I am taking them all on a date.

If someone wasn't into animals its a deal breaker for me...

I think it depends on the situation. My sister at one time had four dogs, a cat, and a snake. She took good care of her animals and her house, so when you went to her house the only thing that showed you she had pets was the giant Doberman who usually ended up on your lap.

I dated a guy last year who had two dogs but didn't seem to bathe them and maybe didn't own a vacuum. So when you went to his house there was this strange smell and lots of unexplained stains on the carpet/furniture. It was just too much.

It sounds like you live on a farm or a ranch, I imagine that's quite different. I can't stand dogs in condos (I personally think it's not fair to keep a dog in an apartment though, surely they need a big backyard to run around and bury bones in? :o).

I do.

There is no way that my dogs would ever cope with living in a condo or a flat. They need space and plenty of it. They are heathens, in the best possible way though!

I do know of plenty of dogs that do cope well and enjoy their life as a "city slicker". As long as they get plenty of walks and have routine, many adapt very well to not having a garden as such to run round. Mine climb up my legs when in town as its just too much for them to cope with and they hate the hussle and bussle... mind you I am just as bad...

They bury their bones in my bed... hence they only have raw hide chews these days ;)

I think someone who doesn't like animals, would be my deal breaker. I've been on many a date with someone that bolted the moment I mentioned that I had birds or chickens.

I have 2 parrots (Moluccan and Goffins Cockatoos), a dog, 4 chickens (they live outside) and 2 fish. And I board my horse. In a few weeks, my best friend will be moving in with her 2 cats and dog. Honestly, that is going to be a bit overwhelming for me, but my dog is slowly dying of cancer (just a fact), my chickens can be sent to the place I board my horse but the Too's are here to stay. It'll all work out, though overwhelming in the beginning. There will also be 3 adults total and 1 animal loving 10yo.

I think people not liking animals says a lot about them. They are not, as we say here, part of the Tribe of Joseph. BUT you have to know what works for you. If you don't like animals, or have a limit on how many you can handle, there is nothing wrong with that and using that as a boundary. Boundaries are good things.

We'll be heading to Oregon to look at real estate in a couple of days. He also goes camping with me in the RV. We (my best friend and I) build RV cat habitats to give cats a bit of freedom and the outdoors while on the road. He's got two he and his wife have taken all over the US in their RV.

I've always been a one pet kind of guy but have accepted dates and mates with multiple pets, though I draw the line at a menagerie like I described prior. That's another full time job and at my age I want to pick up and go and there's no way to easily do that with a gaggle of pets to take care of. Some folks like it though. Just not my cuppa.

I think three dogs would be the maximum I could cope with to look after myself - but I wouldn't try to dictate how many pets another person should have. Though I'd certainly be alert to any signs that the animals weren't being properly cared for, or that there was an embryo animal hoarding problem.

They'd all be competing with eachother for human attention...and it would be a nightmare really. I've visited houses where there have been several dogs, and you always end up swamped by them....with a cat or two trying to sneak through it all to get onto your lap as well.

There's a lot of responsibility involved in pet ownership, and if somebody I met had five dogs my first thought would be "are they all being properly cared for, and does he manage to keep his house in a reasonable state even with all those animals living in it?" If yes, then it wouldn't be a dealbreaker...but I've got to say, I could anticipate it being a fairly regular source of inconvenience.

you have to admit though that it's rare for someone to have 5 dogs

I was round at a friend of a friend's once and she had three Newfoundlands, one lab and one mongrel. And a couple of cats. We were all going on a night out and having a few drinks at hers first. The animals would not leave me alone, and the dogs slobbered all over me. It was a bit of a nightmare. And even though she was evidently pretty houseproud, the smell of that number of dogs in a house tends to permeate every room they spend any amount of time in.

Usually when you hear of somebody having large numbers of animals sharing their living space, the animals in question are cats.

I had a little family of five adopted puppies, and their Mum. We have one left: my Walter, sixteen years old, and I adore him. They had varying levels of independence, some loved other people, others would keep their distance. Some curled up on the bed, others went off on their own. We were fine, and that was probably the best time of my life - we had five cats, too, and a garden that all of them enjoyed. I wouldn't exchange my time with them for anything.

and usually its the old single lady with no kids who never married, hence the term "cat lady"

This woman and her husband have at least fourteen dogs, and seven children:

About me : Manger - they seem to be very happy. I read one interview in which Mimi mentioned her husband bringing home another puppy, after a trip to England.

I can understand why too many animals would turn a guy off or a girl off....but ...wont change how many animals i take in......i have changed how many i keep.....i am at my limit of animals...but...if an animal knocks on my door looking for a feed and a place to call someone who cares they are lost....ill take them in and find them home....

i dream often of a farm on an island surrounded by sea..........and especially a llama i dream of llamas often too..that manger article....sounds like a dream life anela...a wonderful one.........deb
