Too many pets?

I couldn't live without at least 1 dog.

I couldn't be with someone who didn't love animals.

We have 3 dogs, a cat, 2 chickens, 2 ducks, a goat, and several fish in a tank.

I'd love a parrot too! Need to seriously think about rescuing one once things settle down with our new baby!

If I had plenty of money and could create my own ideal situation, I'd fund a lot of pet rescues and have lots of land to keep the unwanted ones. Plus I'd have horses and a couple of goats and chickens and whatever else needed rescuing. But you can't just get a bunch of dogs and farm animals and put them all loose together or you'll have dead chickens, and your goats will strip everything green it can get to. If you don't know what you're doing, you end up with a barren wasteland.

In my dream world, I'd build a home on a big stretch of land in a rural area, and just live off the land. I'd have farm animals, dogs, a ranch cat and my indoor cat. I'd farm my produce.

But as much as I'd adore that, I doubt my dream would come true.

It's called being a "subsistence farmer". Sounds ideal, I agree, but for the hundreds of millions in the world living this life, it's generally not so great.

My grandfather in eastern Kentucky lived this life, and it was Hard.

As a little girl we farmed our produce in the backyard, so I got accustomed to the process. We did not hunt, but I fished a lot.

It's something ive experienced before and know I can do with some supplementation from a market for things here or there, but going fully independent would be difficult for me in the meat department. I'm great with fishing, but I'm no hunter.

I think it's admirable to be as self-sufficient as possible. If the zombie hordes invade tomorrow, I'm pretty sure I can make a go of it. :)

Maybe you could make a deal with a farm that's focused on meat sales? If you were successful in growing vegetables, fruit, etc. Or, if you let people hunt on your land, they give you some of what they catch as payment? I don't like hunting - I would protect all of the deer around here, if I could - but I think that people hunt the deer, turkeys and geese around here.

We live on a nice little piece of land. I love the amount of space in between houses, and the woods behind us. I thought about getting a few chickens, but a few women I know who have them, have lost them to predators before. I guess my limit is cats, dogs, fish, and the turtle we had before she died.

Same! I'm a survivalist. My favorite target for shooting practice actually has zombies on it, haha.

But I know in this current world, I could never pull the trigger while an animal is in my scope. If it were a post apocalyptic world and it was life or death, I'd do it, but id feel less than thrilled. I'd be sure that no part went to waste though.

I'd try my hardest to subsist on fishing and foraging first.

That actually sounds like a nice set up! I'm jealous.

I'd love to get a few chickens. Some neighbors around here have them. I can hear the roosters in the morning. A girl a few blocks down has a cow, she takes it on walks up the street during the summer, it's adorble!

For now I'll be content with my tiny kitty. Curled up asleep in my lap as I type this

Having grown up on a farm i'd def like to gradual make our home now more and more self sufficient.

That said I take no pleasure in hunting. I've done it, I've shot and killed rabbits & game birds and I've sent animals to slaughter, I can do it, I have done it, I would do it again. But I don't enjoy it, in no way what so ever.

But the other side of it is, I don't waste the animal, I've never shot just for fun, and as a massive meat lover I think I would be a hypocrite if I wasn't prepared to pull the trigger.

I'm a meat lover as well, and know that I could only go so long before protein deficiency got to me.

My body is very poor at handling lack of meat. No matter how hard I try to obtain alternative sources of protein, when I am low on meat, I get weak, my skin gets weirdly splotchy, and my hair starts shedding in really alarming amounts. My body just craves protein like mad.

I once dated a woman ,though I do like animals, I think she had one too many pets for me to have to deal with. In fact she has 5 dogs and 1 cat. A bit overwhelming to say the least.

Is someone who owns too many animals a deal breaker for you?

Yes it is for me.
