LoveAlways
I've been taking BC pills for a few years now. I've changed my pill twice, just not to stay on the same for too long cos I heard that was bad. Anyway, I've gone through depression, inescapable lows, anger, you name it, I've felt it and I'm beginning to wonder... GIRLS on ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES, do you even know what your real personality is like off the pill? We're always intoxicated by fake hormones that can make the most easy going carefree girl a depressed suicidal one. We go up and down and never stabilize. Our "moody" problems are mainly the pill to blame. And there's no cleaner, easier method than the pill so what the hell do we do???
Tony T
If you think there are highs and lows being on the pill, try raising an unwanted baby. See your doctor and find a dependable birth control method or alternative pill that might not affect your personality in such dramatic ways. However, you are totally right. I have seen it. Birth control in any chemical form is very powerful and can affect behavior and physical feelings in many ways.

(not necessarily you, but in general, and not all people, of course.)
Donut
It's trial and error finding the right pill to get on with. One made my boobs huge, another gave me migraines and another I had mood swings as you say......... I'm not on the pill right now as I'm not in a relationship, and I do find my mood more even now. Boobs are less tender too. But I will go back on it when a guy comes along, just hopefully a different one that will be better. Not ready for babies!
Meatball
Actually, the pill has helped me. I have been on it for 7 years and when I first started taking them, I had mild acne and it cleared that up. Also, PMS isn't as bad...cramps aren't as painful. You should switch to a different kind. Gemini02
Actually, I originally started taking a the pill FOR my mood swings and depression. I used to get horrible PMS and the pill has helped for that. We're always intoxicated by fake hormones that can make the most easy going carefree girl a depressed suicidal one. We go up and down and never stabilize. Our "moody" problems are mainly the pill to blame. And there's no cleaner, easier method than the pill so what the hell do we do??? And you really shouldn't generalize.
Author LoveAlways
You right, I shouldn't generalise and you guys telling me the positives shows me something... Just been so up and down, I'm wondering whether its just me or the pill ya know. Thanks so much for all your help x x x
HoldOn
It could totally be the pill that is causing your mood swings. My best friend became very depressed on a certain pill. I understand what you are saying, when you have been on medicaiton for your whole adult life how can you know how it changes you?

Israfil
Originally posted by LoveAlways GIRLS on ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES, do you even know what your real personality is like off the pill? No. Not really. I have been on the pill since I was 12, and I have only been off a few times, for my own experimental purposes. And I felt like I was going insane. My emotions became totally uncontrollable, and I became extremely erratic - swinging between irritability, depression, and euphoria - like I was I was watching another person's life from behind my own eyes. So I would imagine that someone who goes on the pill might feel the very same way. By taking drugs of any type, whether legal or illegal, we are altering our body's natural chemistry, and its bound to have repercussions in a variety of ways.

I don't think it's really fair or scientifically accurate to blame the pill for something that sounds a lot more like bipolar mood disorder. Then again being on the pill your whole life could cause that. My Mom is a nurse and always told me to get off of it when I could. I have never been on the pill for more that 3 years at a go. I have taken off a lot of time and only been on 2 different kinds of pills. The first one I was on for 4 years, this one I started in December after my second miscarriage. I have mood swings on or off the pill. Worse on orth-tri-cyclin, better on Yasmin. I actually have FEWER mood swings on yasmin than I do when I am off birth control. Off BC I do the fertility awareness method and I like that better than birth control pills because I know when I am ovulating and feel more comfortable with my own body. I am on Yasmin now, and have been for a year or two, and it has been much better, perhaps because it is a lower hormone dose pill. It is also a new type of bc pill that has anti-androgenic properties, as it utilizes a dual-property progestin, drospirenone. I would agree that you cannot blame your moods entirely on a pill, but any type of hormone replacement, alteration, etc., may affect moods. Look at the most extreme example - testosterone supplements in body builders - they don't call is 'Roid Rage for nothing.
faux
All of this talk concerns me. My girlfriend just started on the birth control patch this past Sunday. Last night over the telephone she complained of slight nausea, but I noticed that she already seems to be getting quite moody. I don't want her to have to go through the horrible side effects I know medication can bring, and I also don't really want to deal with the changes in behavior which might come. Author LoveAlways
Hehe, I dont have bipolar mood disorder - I was just questioning the authenticity of ones personality when there is a possibility that moods and temperaments are chemically/hormonally induced But maybe I should just shut my mouth cos lots of you are telling me moods are actually better regulated on the pill so i can just imagine what some of you loveshackers would diagnose me as -off the pill- probably a multiple personality disorder patient... I just don't think its right anyone's natural and normal makeup should be altered and "denormalised" by something false you know. So basically I wish we all had the same moods on and off the pill and that those moods we good. WHICH IS TOTALLY UNREALISTIC ISNT IT.

WHICH IS TOTALLY UNREALISTIC ISNT IT. It's ok to want... The thing is that the BC Pill was a liberating thing for women. Before birth control was widely available, women actually died of exhaustion. They would get pregnant and have babies until their bodies literally gave out. At that time, abortion was illegal as well. Now you can regulate when and with whom you get pregnant. Some of us still have accidents , but for the most part, BC pills changed our culture permanently and helped enable women to be more liberated and independent. I'm willing to accept the side-effects to prevent unwanted pregnancies. I've had one already and it was enough of a bad experience that I'm willing to just take the pill.
