d0nnivain
Work isn't a friendship even when the co-workers are friendly. You are being paid to make the company profitable. Your convenience and needs are not part of that equation. Sorry but yours is a high class problem. It's unfortunate & maddening but you don't understand the nature of work or the hierarchy of bosses if you are truly perplexed by this.
katiegrl
Oh come on, surely you must have some vacation time accrued. By law, you are entitled to that vacation. If your company gives you no vacation time, you need to get a new job...everyone needs time off from time to time. If not, morale and productivity suffer.

If they can't help you out with one day of the year like this, that is appalling. Best to find another company that allows you a better work-life balance.

Every work day that you previously committed to when you signed on to accept there money as compensation, yes. You are not legally entitled to a vacation. Employers give vacation as a perk to induce people to work for them. You are entitled to a 15 minute break every 4 hours & a meal period if you are working more than 7.5 hours. In the US you may also be entitled to be paid 1.5x if you work more than 40 hours & are a non-exempt employee. If you want or need additional benefits, you need to negotiate them but your employer has zero interest in how you balance your life against the employer's work needs.
Gary S
Bosses can be a problem! All you can do is accept it or apply for other jobs, or start your own bizz where you are the big Kahuna... sometimes you can get lucky and find a good boss at another job. But be aware, most bosses are control freaks - it goes with the territory. It's okay to be a control freak with employees and kids. Crack that whip!

Sorry, but if it's a regular employee we're talking about here - and not some 1099 contractor - I think she has at least reason to expect some time off once in a while. She's not working in India, for fecks sake. My thoughts and feelings aside, the OP would be wise to find a better place to work.

Guess I need a new job lol. Anyways, OP. I wouldn't worry to much about what they think. They can think what they want. It sounds like you are deserving of this vacation time and if they don't think so, screw them. Sometimes you just cannot please everyone.
