StandingO
I am told when I squat (which is not to often) I have a good hip hinge but I bend my spine too much forward over like a old man with a cane lol. I can get to parallel though. Been working on my deadlift instead. My GF has a good hip hinge too. Now on the other her friend she starts off properly but then her knee go too forward and actually pass her toes by a noticeable amount. She know its wrong but does not seem to fix it. Her separated husband started on a challenge a few months ago and has better form. Numbers My GF is down 30 to 40 pounds in the squat because she had a injured shoulder (my fault too) which made painful to hold the bar in a safe way. Not from the gym but rather sparing. She had a good 6 weeks off squats. The most in 20 years :(Now she is better but she dropped from 305 pounds to 270 range and her bench dipped 20 from 115 to 95 pound but she will get them back up. She goes atg. Her friend stopped going as much when the GF could not. She used to squat 225 but looks like is down to maybe 205 (185 for 4 reps) her bench is down to about 95 pounds too. Her ex was motived and increase from 175 to 225 over these same months. He had almost never done squats before. He barely works on his upper body but can manage a 135 bench. I am the odd ball. I bench still just over 300 but I have problems squatting 165 or 135 for 5 or 6 reps. Too much history behind that one lol. Some how I naturally do the hip hinge though. I keep on working on my deadlift.
Author Emilia
Hello StandingO, thanks for your posting. I remember your squat problems and your bench. I know your girlfriend lifts seriously too. How is the deadlift coming on? Any particular program?

StandingO
Hello Emila, In the past I did not do much Deadlifting either, a bit of a off and on relationship and never for long extended periods of time. I have not been on a real program since about 2010. This was before I met my GF. For the most part she pretty much leaves me alone when it comes to training. Sure she has attempted to help me (more so in the beginning) partly because for the longest time we did not even go to the same gym and I was more of a work out at home person. I am not going heavy, often. My grip will give out first. Why I started using the straps when going heavier. I got messed up wrists. DL's are a more natural motion for me over squats. Outside the wrists, its my hamstrings and upper hip region that will also tire faster and what restrict me from bigger lifts and more reps. Age too, I am over 50 now lol. Actually age only because of my history and flexibility as my bench is as good as when I was 25. Couple years ago I could DL do 225 for 4 or 5 then stopped. Not great lol. I am just getting back to that level now but except out of curiosity. Usually right now my reps are 185 to 8, 3 to 5 sets. My back holds up well. My strength is in my chest arms and shoulders. My core is not bad. I think the DL is a good exercise for me to help my weak areas and my attitude is to forget the squat. I feel it helping my hip. My GF used the DL more again last year and helped to increase her squat.
StandingO
205 squat and 205 deadlift on saturday! I know, I know... my DL should be higher... workin' on it! Wow that's great Whirl3daway. You have progress very well over only 6 months. That's pretty darn exceptional
StandingO
I have fingers on both hands that have almost been ripped off my hands some years ago. A few fingers can not fully close or hold a certain level of a squeezed position required to hold a bar hanging like in the Deadlift. It becomes painful and gives out. No problem when holding a bar for the bench press though as it rests on the palms. Also not a issue in the back squat. My wrists have also been sprained numerous times from the work I did in my younger days. Never fully recovered. The front squat is a no no for me. It is also why I don't curl really heavy weights anymore. Having said that I bucked up the pain and was able to DL 205 for 3 sets of 8 last nights with straps. Hammy's are getting better
