AppleKakes
Ok, has anyone ever heard of your employer making you, the employee, pay for your food and/or the set-up, entertainment, etc for your "Employee Appreciation Day" that the employer is supposed to be throwing for its employees? We have to pass the hat for stuff like that, but we're financed with public funds. Can't (or at least shouldn't) use public money for stuff like that. But it does seem a little cheesy, doesn't it? pink_sugar
That does seem odd. I wouldn't decline to attend you must pay your own way.

Your employer sounds like a cheap skate. :roll eyes: Department event should be paid for and catered by your employer if they are requiring everyone to be in attendance. Now if it's just casual drinks with your colleagues after work then that is different. Everyone in this situation should pay for their own stuff. Where I work it's different though. I have my own expense account and company credit card for stuff like this. Plus if I ever go out with my boss he always insists on paying so for me it's never an issue. In my company department get togethers are always paid in advance by our department head.
newmoon
yes, that's how our place does it. we have a party or whatever - that the company decides to throw. and then they don't actually do anything. lol. the employees have to set up, the employees have to figure out the catering place, and then they ask for $20-$25 to participate. and it's held during the workday. so, you either pay $25 to participate with others, opt out and sit at your desk, or take a sick/vacation day. lame. At least you get to opt out. Where I work at, attendance is mandatory and if you dare say a thing, they hold it against you on your evals (I guess the "participation, team" aspect of your eval)....in other words, we have "mandatory fun" Worst, you have no say in what they decide to do. They pick someone from your team to "represent" you at the meetings to come up with the event, but the person designated to represent the team, they pretty much just are a messenger for what higher management already made up its mind is going to take place. They have funds set aside for these things, but at the same time, they have ways they make you spend money...like in the meetings to prep for the event, management decides that they want each team to wear the same T-shirt color. So, the idiot who is representing your team at the meetings tells management (w/o consulting with the team) that we're wearing yellow or blue. So, you gotta find either color of t-shirt in your closet or fork out money to buy one.
Clarence_Boddicker
I thought employee appreciation day was every day the Employer allows the employee to work for them
BikerAccnt
Unless it's a public employer (government, etc) normally the employer pays for that kind of stuff. I can see where a public employer wouldn't, as technically it's not their money they are paying you with - it's mine! and I don't know if you deserve a free lunch on me.

Emilia
So glad I work for Brits. This sort of thing would be major cringe here.
Got it
For us it is budgeted by department for most appreciation events. So the department will pay for their people. We have two conferences that the company holds that has differing attendance requirements based on position and department. For my department I will pay for the end of year party and take everyone out to dinner and then do scattered pizza or ice cream social events. I tend to find people would much rather just have a day off, close early, or bonus than anything else. And since I am not a big social butterfly the kumbaya stuff never makes sense to me. So I just tend to let people leave early paid and figure that is the best thank you I can give. My department has been doing a pot luck among those interested. That is paid by the employees and completely volunteer; it is not company mandated or anything.
