The idea for setting common goals and spending accordingly also looks good - I'll explore this option soon, since I have a good situation to bring it up naturally.

I can't speak for Lucy but I meant (and I think she meant) finding out what his goals are. So that you can assess if you will be compatible. Unless you are very serious, IMO, it's is not your place to determine his overall financial goals. Ok, good luck.
