Perfume, Cologne, Eau de toilet, need basic education on these.

Recommended Posts

So I am graduating from the body spray Old Spice type of thing, trying something that smells nicer; that stuff was effective at attracting insects, that was all. For a mid 30's man I am quite ignorant. I have a good nose and have smelled a lot over the years, but, cannot place words to scents, eh.

What would be some recommendations for me wishing to spend ~20-45 on a bottle of perfume? Calvin Cline Eternity seems to be a favorite, any others?

Aqua Di Gio

Was in Sephora with a girl last year when a sales person gave me a sample.

Seemed like literally the perfect scent for me.

Thanks fellows,

I am on an online retailer right now preparing the order.

Part of my need is the need to have a light breeze for daily work (some sweat mitigation), and a date grade perfume that is classy but doesn't make me smell drunk or flammable. There are some perfumes that smell like drinking alc., you know. For now I am going for Aqua Di Gio in a 3.7 and C.K. Eternity (priced for daily use).

Either of these what you would call daily wear for the office as well as special occasion?

I have both.

I tend to wear lighter scents for work because you don't want your cologne to be overpowering at work and some people are allergic. Those two are fine for work, just don't overdo it.

I have a fairly extensive collection divided into groups. Daytime (work), nighttime (nights out/dating), spring/summer and fall/winter sets.

The two you have chosen are a good starting point though.

try L'Homme by YSL.

I've gotten a bunch of compliments on this. The women in the office were even complaining about me coming in smelling so yummy!

Well describing perfume in words is a challenge, so I appreciate the anecdotal advice. I ended up ordering L'homme and Aqua Di Gio in 3.7 bottles. I had run thru a small bottle of C.K. Euphoria last year that was pretty good, these may be better.

Acqua di Gio is the most popular men's cologne ever, the Everyman cologne, because women love it. Even though it's a common scent, I agree it smells amazing and totally gets me frisky. I imagine it's close to some masculine pheromone that really gets women going, hence the popularity.

About pheromones and so-called pheromone products

But there is no evidence of a consistent and strong behavioral response to any human-produced chemical cue. “Maybe once upon a time we could react more viscerally,” says chemist George Preti of the Monell Chemical Senses Center. Today, however, our reactions seem to be much subtler—and harder to detect—than those of a silk moth. This subtlety has led researchers to propose another kind of chemical messenger, known as a “modulator” pheromone, that affects the mood or mental state of the recipient. In an example of this type, researchers at Stony Brook University found in 2009 that sniffing the sweat of first-time parachute jumpers could increase a person’s ability to discriminate between ambiguous emotional expressions. The implication is that chemicals in the jumper’s sweat might constitute an alarm signal, which puts the recipient on high alert and makes them more attentive to details.

Yet to demonstrate definitively that pheromones are at work, researchers need to point to the molecules responsible, which they have not yet done. To date, scientists have collected evidence for possible pheromone effects but have not definitively identified a single human pheromone.

...The failure to identify human pheromones has not stopped some enterprising individuals from trying to make a profit from love potions purporting to contain pheromones. In reality, these products often use pig pheromones. “They don’t have any history in the biomedical literature—they just fell out of the sky,” says olfactory neuroscientist Charles Wysocki, also of Monell. For now, the idea of perfumes and potions based on human pheromonal communication just doesn’t pass the sniff test.

On line is the worst way to buy scent. Just because something smells good in the bottle doesn't mean it will smell good on you. You have to try various scents. Go to a good department store & see what works with your body chemistry. Also put more on the lower pulse points because scent rises. Go easy around your upper body.

Old Spice has been coming out with some decent variety of stuff. I bought them for my last FWB and for my brother.

Bath and Body Works also has some decent stuff for men.

I really didn't/don't pay attention to men's stuff. I can surely tell you I get pissy when I smell what I "don't" like (one guy literally at my job smelled like urine and talc powder).

Now, I did take care when I bought my last FWB Gucci's "Guilty Intense" ;) and he loved it!!

The first time I smelled it I bumped into wall.

Was walking and saw a cute guy

and he smelled so divine Instead of walking around it

Well LOL

He stopped and I had to spill it LOL

We laughed like loons and he was charming and sweet.

It depends on your personal scent. Take the afternoon and go to the perfume store :D

But just to give you ideas, some male scents I like for summertime are the following (they're kind of more expensive though):

Issey Miyake - L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme

Hermes - Terre d'Hermes

Bvlgari - Blv

Dsquared - He wood

If you really want a budget scent, the body shop makes some very nice scents for men for very good prices. White musk for men and Activist are my favs.

I have three "essentials" which I have a permanent supply of.

For autumn-spring, Lalique Encre Noire, I love it. I would try describing it myself, but the guys at Fragrantica do a much better job of it: Encre Noire Lalique cologne - a fragrance for men 2006

For spring-summer, it's got to be Boss Bottled. It's a classic scent. Boss Bottled Hugo Boss cologne - a fragrance for men 1998

And for a particularly warm spring, and for most summer days, a splash of Thierry Mugler Cologne (which is incidentally an EDT) is a very fresh neroli and citrus scent.

Mugler Cologne Thierry Mugler perfume - a fragrance for women and men 2001

BONUS PICK: Issey Miyake L'eau D'Issey. I got a bottle of it from my ex - let's just say it's one of the few things she got right.

L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Issey Miyake cologne - a fragrance for men 1994

I'll have my items in a couple of days. Going in a store and evaluating my "Chemistry," just isn't me. There are certain areas where I seek advice, this is one of them. I'll update with my thoughts.

Yes, well, I like to be able to answer when asked what the perfume is, a more conservative label is less troubling for me!
