Religious beliefs do not deserve respect.

It's not an issue of disrespect though. It's an issue of disagreement.

I disagree with the lens that the Republican, religious right use to view the world through. And when I engage in discussions with people from that group, their "my way or the highway" attitude only confirms my belief that it would be impossible for me to have any kind of friendship because our belief systems clash. That doesn't make me a bad person to know what my standards and limits are, with regards to the types of people I choose as friends. It boils down to preference. I prefer not to be friends with people who are religious or conservative.

This makes sense to me. There are people I prefer not to be friends with as well. In fact, I had to break a friendship recently with someone who was just angry all. the. time. It was toxic.

I'm glad that you can understand where I'm coming from and sorry to hear that you had to end a friendship with someone who was toxic in your life. But that's what religious people are to me -- toxic -- because I can't agree with that perspective anymore. It's not that don't respect religious people. I just totally disagree with the belief that there is a God and no matter how nice or compatible the person is with me as a friend, it's that basic core belief that always gets in the way because my Atheistic beliefs are viewed so negatively.

Rejected Rosebud

I would like to approach people with respect and listen to their views with an open mind and respect, I can't do that though when their views are coming at me with disrespect. There are alot of TRUE Christian people who don't spend much or any of their time at all hating other religions, gay people, Obama, women who have careers, etc, but when somebody introduces their religion as mostly about what they hate, what they are sure God hates, and insane self righteousness I can't even give the benefit of the doubt I just shut that s**t down fast!!! That doesn't just go for Christianity but also for members of other religions who come from a place of absolute righteousness and ready to condemn others and shove their beliefs down your throat, I don't know any Islamic people personally but for me that is exactly the same, I would like to understand the belief system and how regular people have good lifes because of it but when it is introduced full of hate, NO.

Amen. Religious or not, when someone demonstrates that angry hateful disrespect is the only way they communicate, I am not interested.
