kit4kat
Starting today, for the next 15 days I'm going on a juice fast. I'm kinda nervous, because I think I'm hypoglycemic and I don't what my body will do with no food for 15 days but... Has anyone fasted before? Any advice? Tips?
moimeme
You should never, EVER, do anything so drastic without the help and cooperation of a physician. Your body needs food for fuel - if it doesn't get enough, it starts destroying itself in order to get enough protein - and it will consume muscle mass, including heart mass. This is an extremely unwise and dangerous plan you have. In short, DON'T DO IT. You could damage your vital organs for life.
XNemesisX
YOU. CANNOT. BE. SERIOUS. A 15 day fast? Are you anorexic? Holy cow. Very unwise indeed.
tiki
Unless you can get your recommended daily allowances from your juice, I wouldn't do it. Hello diarrhea.
scarlyjones
Are you overweight? ANd this is a way to lose it?? If so,.....this isnt even close to being a way to do it. You WILL gain it back. You will gain it back and MORE. So if you do this,...count on major, MAJOR,..diarihea,.....and being even fatter in like two months. That is if you dont die from this. Your body needs potasium to live. If you dont get it enough,..you go into seizures. And juice doesnt have any,.....or enough. If this is indeed a weight loss thing,.....then,...man oh man,....that is the LAzzzzzzzzzzziest way to do it. You have to exercise. Eat better. starving yourself is the dumbest,...most dangerous thing you can do to lose weight. Yeah,..you will lose weight,....but you will LOOK sickly. It wont be a good thin. Trust me,...you will look ugly as hell. Blemishes,....veins showing through your facial skin,....dark bags under eyes.....dry skin,....no energy.............trouble sleeping or even all out insomnia...........headaches,....muscle aches....immune system shut down. You will look and feel like death warmed over. But,..Im sure you will discount everything I just said and do it anyway. Happy dying!

scarlyjones
not even THAT!!................Tell me,...what doctor is going to say its ok to not eat for 15 days? Terri Schiavo died in 14. Juice MAY get you to 15 but your digestive system will be so screwed up your metabolism wont be ANYTHING. You will gain 8 lbs from one piece of cake. Your body wont be able to digest anything any thicker than juice. You cant not eat food for two weeks, then suddenly reintroduce it to your stomach on the 16th day. It wont know what to do with it. You'll get sick. Very sick. Either that, or you will gain it all back in a week or so.

The point is... regardless of what new diet a person wishes to try.. it is ALWAYS a good idea to check with thier Doctor FIRST. No one is saying her Doctor is going to say "Hey good to go.. drink juice for 15 days"
HoldOn
You'll only end up gaining MORE weight! After it's done your body will over compensate and hang on to every ounce of fat, as if its life depended on it. Your metabolism will get lower and lower until it is almost impossible for you to lose weight. DON'T DO IT. Eat healthy. Exercise! It is the ONLY way to lose weight.

Author kit4kat
Thanks for the concern everyone. I didn't expect a responce like that. You should never, EVER, do anything so drastic without the help and cooperation of a physician. Your body needs food for fuel - if it doesn't get enough, it starts destroying itself in order to get enough protein - and it will consume muscle mass, including heart mass. I don't know if I'd consider this drastic. People have fasted for years, and they have lived without destroying anything in them. Our bodies were designed to survive 40 days without food. A 15 day fast? Are you anorexic? Holy cow. Very unwise indeed. No, I love food too much to be anorexic. I agree, people who starve themselves are doing it the lazy way, but I'm not starving myself. I exercise on a consistant basis, and I eat relatively healthy. I'm doing this as a way to detoxify my body, and to grow closer to God. In biblical times, fasting was a way of worship, and that is my main goal with these 15 days... not to starve myself or loose weight, but to enter into a new phase in my spiritual walk with the Lord. I will keep everyones concerns in mind, especially since I'm not sure my body can handle 15 days without food. If anything feels wrong, I will start eating again.
HoldOn
God doesn't want you to starve yourself. If this is really to get closer to God, couldn't you fast during day light hours (like Muslims) or take out your favorite foods or something. "detoxifing"? Ug. I'm sorry, but there's no need for that. This is utterly unhealthy. If you want to detoxify, why don't you try just eating natural foods or something?
faux
Although I'm very curious to find out what would happen if you starved yourself for two weeks, I don't think it's such a good idea for you to go and do that. I have a feeling everyone is correct in assuming this is unhealthy for you. I am sure there are better, safer ways to feel closer to God.
tiki
kit4kat....I'm not totally against it by any means. I've fasted before (for religious purposes) and our church asks us to do it often - especially when people are in need of prayer. But check into it, do some reasearch. Consider fasting for a day (or even a couple of meals). Then replace prayer with food. If you're really dead set on the 15 days, pace yourself. Just take one day at a time. Then go from there. I'm not really too concerned, I think you can do it...just being honest. But I think it's important that you receive good nutritional content from what you drink. Get some protein drinks too. But again...hello diarrhea! Good luck (whatever you decide) and I hope it provides whatever outcome you are looking for.
XNemesisX
Because it's going to play quite a number on your brain, my dear. It's an altered consciousness just like doing drugs. Don't fall for this. If you want the same affect to "get close to God" skip fasting for 2 weeks and drop some acid instead. Same effect. You will have an altered mindset, therefore it might bring you closer to God. Ugh...don't do this. It's not going to bring you closer to God to fast. It's just another misconception.
HotCaliGirl
Too much fruit juice can be very unhealthy. They contain a lot of sugar with very little nutritional value. The sugar level in your blood will go up and there will be no solid foods in your system to neutralize it. This will convert the glucose straight to fat and if you have diabetes I think it would be even more dangerous, as it mimics the symptoms of a diabetic person. I would have a lot of water instead, with at least some iceberg lettuce and some vegetables - very low in calories but solid matter the body needs to break down and convert to waste. This will be better cleansing, at it will scrape away and remove the toxins from your intestines naturally, giving you a boost in energy too. Otherwise, at the end of the 15 days, your metabolism will have slowed down to a level that it could take over a year to bring back to it's original level, plus you will have done a lot of internal bodily damage. You could expect a lot of hair to fall out and nails to be weak and break. I'm not religious, but I think those characters in the bible were out in the desert where food supply was low and they were forced to fast. Many died or became delusional and started seeing things and even giving all their money to the church to get cured when all they needed was a nice meal. If you feel you are going to go through with it, at least do it for a few days instead of 15 so the damages to your body won't be as severe...
moimeme
uh oh... kitkat hasn't posted in a while...I hope she didn't starve to death Her first post about this was yesterday. I don't know if I'd consider this drastic. People have fasted for years, and they have lived without destroying anything in them. Our bodies were designed to survive 40 days without food. No they're not!!!!!! That was Jesus, fergawdsakes - as in God - as in not likely to starve to death. We are absolutely NOT designed to survive 40 days without food. And you being a hypoglycemic could easily go into shock and die. This is a VERY dangerous plan you have. Please don't use the Bible as a medical reference!!!!
Author kit4kat
No they're not!!!!!! That was Jesus, fergawdsakes - as in God - as in not likely to starve to death. We are absolutely NOT designed to survive 40 days without food. And you being a hypoglycemic could easily go into shock and die. This is a VERY dangerous plan you have. Please don't use the Bible as a medical reference!!!! Jesus is God, but he was also fully human. I know I read somewhere in some science book that the body can survive without water for 3 days, and without food for 40. I wasn't using the Bible as a medical reference, just as an example that a 40 day fast has been accomplished before. I've given in a lot of thought. After reading everyones concerns, I came to the conclusion that fasting for 15 days is probably a bit extreme. I'm always over eager to do things and do them the best I can, and I figured 15 days was a great idea... the way I saw it, if people can do it for longer, then I can surely last for 15 days. Umm, yeah right! I lasted 1! I woke up this morning and went to 7-11 to buy some juice and water. I'm not a big eater, so I was completely fine just drinking my juice and water all day. Then I had to work. My job is an on-your-feet-all-the-time job and I'm CONSTANTLY moving. I had began to feel a little weak at like 3pm, but by the time 5 rolled around, I needed food, or I was going to pass out. During the day, I had done a little more research on juice fasting and I was reading the different stages your body is supposed to go through during this type "detoxification". Honestly, it didn't make much sense to me. Plus, I looked up some passages in the bible, and it talked about fasting in times of mourning, and in daily increments... not weekly. So, needless to say, I will not be fasting. My 18-hour experience today was enough to satisfy my curiosity.
jesusfist
bad, dont do. juice = no protein, muscle gets broken down for food = you'll look crap and feel crap, then the wonderful effects of digested muscle released amonia into your blood steam and when the concentration reaches a certain point brain damage for all which is why the atkins diet is dumbass.
