carhill Posted July 22, 2015 Share Posted July 22, 2015 To me, hobbies are interests one pursues for personal pleasure and satisfaction. Sounds like what you listed fits the bill. I presume EMT means something other than a med tech. Examples from my past life would be auto racing, car collecting, cycling, traveling, etc. Today, mostly I work on friend's houses for fun. In my case reading fiction, and knitting . Doing these two things giv e me pleasure and I feel good. I can do them for as long as I want. My job was a hobby before i was lucky enough to get paid for it. I love what i do. But i guess outside interests really....... Mainly social things. Usually involves pubs and loads of mates. With the kids though i actually have many hobbies. Crafts, actually a lot of needlework. I invested recently in a cracking sewing machine. The kids love all that and i am now a proud subscriber to online magazines which i never thought possible. `Ponies lego dream house` (The stables are tricky) `Baby in my belly` (highly educational) `101 things to do on a rainy Sunday` `Sewing machines monthly` And of course cooking.......... ` 2 Link to post Share on other sites

Bubberfly Posted July 25, 2015 Share Posted July 25, 2015 In my experience hobbies are things that you find pleasure in during your life that really serve no other purpose than to interest you and keep you entertained. My personal hobby is customizing resin ball-jointed dolls. I buy the expensive dolls, paint them, turn them into creatures/beautiful things. I sew them outfits. I make the vignettes (backgrounds), I photograph them then share photos online. Sometimes I sell them and make extra money. Some of the ones I'm really attached to I keep. Sure, some people find it cool. Some people think it's dumb. But it's what I like doing. The point is, what purpose does my hobby serve? I have a dull job, I have a pretty hectic life taking care of things that really don't interest me (but I gotta do them) and my hobby is something that I MAKE time for in between all the work and the chores and the exercise and school and social obligations because its the one thing I do for me that I love doing. 2 Link to post Share on other sites

As example, a person could be a trained EMT but work in another profession and do the EMT stuff 'for fun' as a volunteer. This often goes on in small towns that can't afford highly paid professional full-time services, with EMT's and firefighters as examples. I could certainly envision working on firefighting equipment, since I do this kind of stuff as part of my business anyway, for 'fun' and being a volunteer firefighter in a small town if living there. Fixing stuff and helping out for free can easily be a hobby. Common? Probably not. Link to post Share on other sites

compulsivedancer Posted July 25, 2015 Share Posted July 25, 2015 Working out could be a hobby, depending how you do it. I have a Facebook friend who does Cross Fit and it's her life. She competes and judges competitions on the weekend. Likewise, if you spend a lot of time at the gym because it makes you happy, and you read about working out, or you participate in forums or discuss it a lot with friends, I'd say it's a hobby. If you just go and bust your butt a few times a week to stay healthy, it's more like listing eating as a hobby (which might qualify, but only if you do it for fun and put time and effort into it, etc). A topical analogy would be a funeral director enjoying taxidermy as a hobby and mounting animals they have hunted themselves or are given by friends to mount because they enjoy the work.
