Selfishness - people don't want someone else having more than they do so even if they don't truly want it they'd rather claim it than allow anyone else to possibly benefit from it. If every time you walked outside your front door there was a huge pile of diamonds to step over, you'd hardly see them as precious would you? The law of scarcity only makes them want you.
