CurlyIam
I've started jogging since 2 weeks ago. At first I did it to simpy get out of the house - not too much activity in my life right now. I'm running once every two or three days. More like every 2 days. I just love it, it's an incredibly mild spring here and I live near the Senna... I get to run near it and I see the little ships carrying sand and meeting lots of people with dogs - a few Golden Retrievers too, my weakness .. So that's why I've started jogging. that and my wish to lose weight without starving myself to death. Now, the more I do it, the more I love doing it. I've increased the amount of time I jog, but I have no idea what other fields to cover. I want to be jogging, but I want to do it in a healthy way. Like when am I to increase the time I jog? After a week, 2 weeks, a month? I know I'm not drinking enough water. Do I need to take any type of vitamine suppliments and won't that make me fat - I am NEVER taking vitamines or calcium. I drink a lot of milk and I do eat cheese a lot. What am I to use for my legs - like if my musles are sore? After I jog I take a very hot shower and an aspirin. But I'm still fighting muscular fever. It's soo wonderful, at times I just want to jog and not stop. I feel like I could be jogging for hours. It's like a new toy, only that it's my body and spring and dogs, lol! So if you have any type of advice, please post!
westernxer
You may want to try running for distance instead of time. It's easier to measure results that way as well. For instance, start out with a mile and see how your stamina goes. Then increase to a mile and a half, then two, or however you wish. The ideal is 30 minutes of cardio. If you can run a mile in 7-8 minutes, you'll cover nearly four miles in thiry minutes (convert to kilometers since you're in France). You'll know when to increase when it starts getting easier. If you feel like doing more, go for it. Your body will let you know if you can or can't go further. Eat some pasta (plain) 30-45 minutes before working out; the body will break it down easily into the energy you need to maintain your workout. Ice your sore muscles after working out... ice works wonders. You may also want to buy some sports cream to rub on afterward (make sure it doesn't have that strong smell that permeates your clothing and/or the entire room). You can take vitamins if you like; try a multivitamin. That's what I usually take. Milk has a lot of calcium, so you're fine there. If you're eating somewhat healthy, no need to change it if you don't want to lose pounds. Running will trim a few anyway. If you want a new challenge after a few sessions, try running up hill. It's great for your quads. Don't forget to stretch before running.
ashley83
I have done the running plan at this site.....and it's awesome!! I made to the end, and now I'm runnin 3 miles 3 times a week...and am gonna work up http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml Also, at the same site there are different forums where you can talk about running, there's major support http://www.coolrunning.com/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi
HotCaliGirl
Congrats on your running Curly! That is great!!! westernxer took most of my advice right out of my mouth!!! When I started running, it was at the gym and I'd be on the treadmill until I got tired, then walk, then run more...in a few months I was able to run almost as long as I wanted to at a good pace. Once I was able to get there, which it sounds like youo're already just about there, I started running outdoors to make it funner and like you, it is great to see dogs, faces, scenery, etc. To get a little more challenge, I run steep uphill roads in Malibu with beautiful views of the ocean. As for your muscular pain, you may get them in the beginning, but think of it as a reminder of what it stands for and soon your muscles will adjust, expand and no longer hurt. I've taken vitamins since I was maybe 3 or 4. I have tons and tons of different ones I take. The foods in the market are depleted of just about all nutrition, they're all genetically modified and unless you take supplements, you won't be in good shape. Experiment with different brands until you find one (without starch!) that you feel the best results with. ALso, if you are not drinking enough water like you say, try gatorade, propel or some other low sugar drink. You won't benefit with maximum results if you don't drink enough water. Also, remember to et a lot of rest, and at LEAST 1 deay in between runs, better to have at least 2 or more so that your body will have time to rest, recover and build (or else it will take you twice as long to get results). Good Luck!!! :)
Author CurlyIam
Thans guy, I really do appreciate it! I just love how my tummy feels - it's to early to notice anything different with my legs. Speaking of which... I won't get the muscled legs like Superman, will I? Not that it would stop me from running, ! It's such a great feeling, just like you said HotCaliGirl! It's a lousy day here, it's been raining in the morning and I was sooooo tempted to get out for a jog! I'm incorigible! Lika I said, my new toy!!! I've decided I won't be taking vitamins :guilty:. My mom made me take those right after I stopped being a vegetarian - and it took me years to shake off the extra pounds. I know I'm being sily, but I'm just ... very reticent when it comes to it, lol! I'll eat more fruits instead - Bio stuff, it's not that outrageously expensive here! Wex, I was just about to ask about alimentation, like what nt to miss. I eat very rarely red meat (or meat, for that matter). I am eating fish oor sea food once every 2 weeks and I've decided to do that more often. Can you guys PM me a plan on what type of food to alternate during a week? Thanks a lot, it's almost like a hobby. As far as the legs are concerned, it's right above the ankles, at the back of the leg that I had most problems with - they were a bit sore. Now, it's the upper front part of my thighs, lol! I uses a pharmaceutical product (expensive too) against stretched joints :guilty:. Ashley83... THANK you THANK you THANk you for those sites! that's just what I want to do, not start something of my own all alone in the dark and not know where I'm heading! Great tips for the warm up, I was kindda skippin the streatching! Love you guys, Curly
Author CurlyIam
Oh, I was wondering, you said I'd better just do it two or three times a week. I've got a swimming pool near by and a handfull of free time. Can I go out for a swim in between, or just stay put and let my body recover and get some rest?
Auz
I think swimming would be ok..or maybe even try doing some weights at a gym. That way you vary which muscles you are working out, and tone yourself a bit.
heyi
hey im goin to start running as well to get rid of the fat on my stomach. did runnin make ur stomach flatter??
HotCaliGirl
Swimming in between is ok bec. you'll be using different muscles, mostly your arms. I don't understand what you mean by gaining weight from taking vitamins?

The great feeling comes from endorphins, otherwise known as "runner's high." Running up hills will also work your ass.

IT's Amazing for your stomach - and not only! In 2 weeks it shows BIG time! To me, anyways! HoTCali - yeah, it's true! It was horrific. I need a year to lose everything I gained. And it was the vitamines. I grew such an appetite I could eat a horse those days, Lol! It ruined my popularity that summer, I can tell you that! Wex, thanks for the info. HotCaliGirl
Please tell me what happened! I've never heard of anyone gaining weight on vitamins!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And yes, running is great for your stomach. My stomach is so hard you can bunch it and it will hurt your fist

Author CurlyIam
I don't know what happened, Hot Girl. If I did, I'd tell you. All I know is my mom taking me by the hand, going to the doc, making a blod analyss, seeing that I had a mild anemy, seriously lacked calcium and magnesium, and being a doc, she stuffed me with lots of pills. So there you have it. Bang, 15 pounds in 2 weeks. At least. And they just wouldn't go off, I swear to God! I felt like an elephant, LOL!!! Anyway, exercise seem to do the trick in the end. Lots ans lots of exercise and crazy diets. I think I've f*cked up my methabolism right at that time. And I'm not the only one who suffered from it. I know a few acquaintances of mine... wooow, they were growing and kept on growing, I tell ya!!

Author CurlyIam
Hi, Sami I'm still new to the whole idea of jogging, also I do enjoy practicing it a lot. I'll try to answer some of your questions. I don't know if it's the best thing to do, but I do not eat one hour before running and I usually have a light meal - I hate feeling my stomach all full - yuk! I eat at least one hour after I jog! Jogging will most certainly work your stomach muscles. It's very hard until you get those in shape. I know that it will shape up your tummu and your waiste (?? sorry, I'm not sure I've spelled that right). How long do I jog? It doesn't really matter. What matters is that you start jogging. Just for a couple of minutes the first day. Walk a bit, run, walk again after that. LEarn what your body can do without taking it to extreme. See how much you cn run util you feel tired / lose your breath. Keep it there for the next 2 sessions - get your body used to the fact that you're exercising. And then, slightly increase the time that you jog. I work better with time, other people measure the miles. At times, I'm tired, and I try not to over do it, so I keep a slow pace, and just really enjoy running. Other time it's distance or being faster. But you'll get there eventually. As I say to my friends, the most important thing of all is to get out there and start running. Good luck!
Auz
Sami, I have a friend who is a triathlete and a while ago she gave me 2 tips that may help you. 1) Your body only really starts eating into its long term energy source ie your fat after 20 minutes of excercise - before that, it just works on more readily available sources ie recently digested food. Ofcourse the exact time will vary depending on how hard you exert yourself, but its a good enough approximation. So anything more than 20 minutes is good. I get bored easily on gym equipment, so usually do 20 minutes on treadmill, then 25 on a rower etc or do a 45min jog. I personally try to do at least 45min-hr anytime I excercise. 2) This is one I never thought of, but makes sense - give yourself 20-30minutes break AFTER you excercise before you eat. Even though you arent excercising, your metabolism is still powering away and eating into that fat. By eating after you jog, your body will just start feeding off that easier energy source, so go have a shower, read a book, watch tv and once your body is back to a calm stage, then eat something (healthy;)) Personally, I dont think eating to soon before you run is good either as a) it bloats you and b) you are giving your body too much easily accesible energy. Let it eat into that fat! But obviously dont starve yourself before jogging, because then you'll be doing more harm than good. Hope this helps, Auz
Auz
Also... a good stomach muscles excercise. Lie down on your stomach with feet together, toes touching the floor, like you are getting ready to do push ups. Now push yourself up, like you would to do a push up and stay up..make sure your back is straight! and practice holding it for say 20 seconds. It sounds easy, but you'll find it really starts to work your stomach muscles. If 20 is easy, just hold it as long as you can ie 30 or 40 or more... Now to make it harder, go down onto the left elbow, then your right elbow (so now both elbows are touching the ground)(still holding your back straight!), then up onto your left hand and then onto your right, so you return to the starting position and repeat again. For variety when you go down onto your elbows try stay there for 15-20 seconds, before going back up onto your hands. It sounds easy, but it does work your stomach the whole time without needing stronger arms like you do for pushups- you may need to try holding for 10 seconds first, etc etc - but you get the idea. The important thing is to keep the back straight. Auz
sami81
everyone thank u so much for answering all og my questions, i really appreciate it. I still have more questions to ask lol about getting rid of the fat in my stomach. i hate my stomach i mean there is no layers of fat its just when i sit there is this huge pouch that forms and i have a line beneath my breast which i didnt have before. and so i really want to get rid of the fat and get a flatter stomach. so i decided running is the best because crunches just builds up your muscles. just to make sure 1) do i eat light before going out to jog? 2) how many times a day sould i run? Is once enough and that also in the morning. 3) list of foods i should eat to make sure my stomach doesnt become bigger and bigger and at the same time i dont lose weight on the other parts of my body. i was thinking of having for breakfast everyday egg, oranje juice, whole grain bread afternoon: chicken salad, juice, what else?? snack: green tea and apple dinner: ?? Author CurlyIam
Hi, Sami I KNOW what you mean, I freak out, the moment I feel the dreaded rolls installing in. It will get better, you have to be CONVINCED of it. And don't abuse your body. It's the only one you've got. Read these poste carefully, Sami. Very carefully. Jog three times per week. Rest at least on day in between jogs to allow your body to get rest and tone up. Don't abuse it. And don't look for instant results either. Take it easy, take your time and built a strong base for a sane body. I don't know if it's about what to eat, really, but about how you cook it. If you boil most stuff insead of frying them, you're gaining hundreds of calories. Greens, vegetables, fruit. Stay within these lines and you should be all right. And drink LOTS of watter. That's the cheapest and yet one of the most efficient diets ever. Oh, yeah, and you might want to stay away from beer !!! Horrid, but.. necessary! Stay strong and be patient. Lots and lots of patience. Good luck!

I love it because I get to also exercise my hands - I've got rather long and skinny arms. I've never tried working them up decause I was afraid of Popeye's arms, lol! Anyway, Auz, thanks! moimeme
sami - gotta get the vegies in. Eat salads and nuke yourself some vegies for each dinner. It takes very little time and vegies are delicious and then some when not overcooked.
Author CurlyIam
Meat is very important also - animal proteins cannot be replaced. But make it a little slice on a side, rather than the main dish. And consider fish too. Fish is soooo good (if properly cooked ). Just... don't see it like a chore. I think that if you enjoy cooking, this will be easier for you, it's like discovering new dishes every day. You have to love what you eat, if not, you'll end up dreaming about fries and pasta cabonara - aka known as the Devil in our case, lol!
