Preface: I work at a small company with about only 20 employees and my job is a combination of several jobs: acctg, inventory mgmt, HR, and sales. Our parking lot is on the other side of the building as my office, which I really don't mind as I actually enjoy getting in those extra steps each day (I'm an avid exerciser and will take the long route any time that I can.)

So as for what I'm really here for...this morning it was pouring rain, it was coming straight down. Of course this would have to happen on the day that I have a big meeting at 8:30am with a client whose account we really want to acquire. I parked in a visitor stall (we have five visitor stalls that are NEVER completely full at one time) because I didn't want to looked like I had swam to work during my meeting. I never park there, as a matter of fact I usually take one of the furthest parking spots available in the lot so that our employees feel that there is equity among all. After the meeting my boss marched into my office and proceeded to lecture me that those parking spots are for visitors only and that I am hereby warned not to park there again.

Since I am not a "repeat offender" on this issue and did happen to have an important meeting, am I wrong to feel that this was out of line on his part?

unfortunately he was ok to say Not to park in the visitor spots.

imagine if everyone had parked there cause it was raining?

or there just happened to be a meeting with 5 visitors attending?

Yes, i agree, he could have been a bit more understanding and not as harsh.

B_O, keep those p' and q's straight, make sure to cross all t's and stab all the dot's on the i's. I think you need to be an exemplamary employee for a few months, and only cause your (ex?) boss is a psycho.

Nice that he asked, I've worked places where they just tow the car and you discover it when you go to leave (argh!!!)

I don't know if this will mean anything to anyone, but the company I work for is a manufacturing company. Seventeen of our 20 employees come into the building and change into uniforms/hairnets so if they get wet on the way in it's not the end of the world (not that it is for me either.) BUT, I'm trying to make money for this guy and get an account that he has be coveting since he started this company....don't you think this ONE time he could cut me some slack? He knows me well enough to know that it's not something that is going to become a habit. I guess I just figured he could cut me some slack...maybe I'm wrong.

LaRubiaBonita, you're not confusing me with blind_otter, are you?

I think you should just invest in another umbrella, and leave that umbrella in your car at all times. I am sure that you will not park in the visitor spaces again, so I do not think this is anything to be concerned about.

I think your boss might consider you a bit odd for not having an umbrella with you, honestly.

As for your boss being out of line, I cannot say. You did something you were not supposed to to. I don't have any descriptions of how your boss lectured you, and if his behavior during the lecture was inappropriate.

Parking spaces just seem to be one of those things people like to get excited about at work. Using a visitor's spot is hardly a hanging offence, but you weren't supposed to do it so you got told not to do it again. Sounds reasonable. Agree that "Hereby warning you" is a bit of an over-reaction though. Pompous old fart
