Any good cures for very dry skin?

Recommended Posts

I am at my wit's end. I have been battling dry skin for AGES it seems!

I have tried every moisturizer I knew existed. Even Eucerin...

I always wear oil-based foundations also...

I should probably also add that before I started smoking I didn't notice the dry skin so much! Now it is just awful!

My question, does anyone have any really good cures for dry skin? I have already seen my dermatologist and she gave me this stuff called Cloderm but it hasn't helped. :(

Make sure to stay hydrated. Being dehydrated causes your skin to dry out, so drink plenty of water.

I drink TOO much water! I'm not sure if you saw my thread on my "neverending thirst" or not. I literally drink one glass of water after another! Or well, I have been cutting back on how much water I drink with some of the suggestions I got on that thread. I stick to more sugary beverages now or drinks with calories and it seems to have helped.

So, the hydration is not really the problem...

i have dry skin as well..and its worse in winter..when i go outside for a walk it feels like a million ants are on my skin...

my mom says that for dry skin to use a loofah and exfoliate ina nice warm bath..and usually after that I myself usually put on vaseline and cover that part of the skin thats dry up with clothing.that somewhat helps me out

so you should use two different ones, one for face and one for body....

hmmm...every try aveda for your face? their stuff is pretty good, and i have dry skin also. it's also good for sensitive skin. they use a lot of oatmeal based stuff that's awesome!

for body, try olay quech, if you haven't already.

and keep in mind that too much oil can also dry out your face...i know it sounds not right, but it can. maybe try a normal based foundation and a new moisturizer.

good luck!

Yes XNX, I suffer from very dry skin esp during our Michigan winters when humidity is low. Here is my solution and it is really easy and it works.

If you are showering every day then STOP and shower every other day. The soap really dries out your skin a lot and removes the natural oils. Try it for 2 or 3 wks and see what happens.

hey, nem...i am guessing that as a girl, you don't use bar soap...

have you ever tried olay moisturizing body wash for extra dry skin? it works AWESOME!!! it's a wite bottle with a yellow cap (i think there's one with a purple cap and a pink cap, but go for the yellow.) and it smells really good too.

Sex Kitten is on the money!

I suffer from Atopic Dermatitis ( aka really f*cking dry skin)

I have a little routine and it seems to help me.

1- In the shower I use a loofah and Olay Moisturizing Body wash with the 'yellow cap' it does smell really good and leave you oh so soft.

2-When I'm taking a bubble bath or my skin is really dry ( like when I come back from the beach) I bathe in Aveno soap. It comes in little packets that you sprinkle into the bathtub. But they got all advanced now and I think they have bar soaps and body wash.

3-After I get out of the shower I pat dry myself ( never rub ) with a hundred percent cotton towel and then I use Neutrogena's Bath Oil and rub it on. It replaces the natural oils your body is missing or that your body loses when in the shower. And it doesn't leave you feeling Oily it disappears right in.

4- I wash my face with proactive but thats a whole other thread....and then I use an Oil of Olay moisturizer for my face. Its light and it keep my face feeling nice.

5 THEN lol I use Oil of Olay Quench all over my body. I LOVE that lotion!!!

Then end. phew. It seems like a lot of work now that i had to type it out but I have it down packed. It takes me like 5 mins. And my skin feels so muh better. Its really soft!

Just using Vaseline (not the lotion but straight petroleum jelly) is great. Dont apply too thick before bed and in the morning you shouldnt be as dry. Also using Palmers Coco Butter is great too. That is something you can use during the day and it wont make your skin shinny like the Vaseline. Those are my two beauty tips. Hope it helps. I hate when I have dry skin...

A humidifier in your home would help too.

if you're already trying to hydrate yourself by drinking lots of water, but still have problems with dry skin, it could be that whatever your town is putting in the water to make it safe is killing your skin. Do you bathe or shower? One thing I've done is dump a bit of baking soda (about a quarter-cup) into my bath water, especially when I shave, and that seems to keep my skin from being too dry.

I also switched over to St. Ives body wash, the Collagen Elastin formula, which works even BETTER than the Jergens Moisture body wash (I believe it's the stuff in the pink bottle).

lotions vary: Eucerin moisture therapy (smells like roses) has worked the best because it absorbs nicely into my skin, but I have also coated my hands with Vaseline (fine layer) before going to bed at night because that seems to be the worst time I start losing skin moisture.

The Collagen Elastin sells for like $3 a bottle, but it's well worth it. And it doesn't have a heavy or make-uppy smell.

I used to have REALLY dry skin..........to the point that friends would sometimes lean in when I was speaking and try to pull off a skin flake from my cheek or nose. It was EMBARRASSING. I took some advice from this guy who worked at a salon I go to. He gave me this stuff called PINNACLE Hydrating Massage Cream. It works miracles. I had dry skin all my life. ALL OF IT. I just gave up. I thought my skin would be all scalely for ever and just accepted it. Until I got this stuff!!!!! I use it twice a day. I put it on in the morning at around 5am and my face still feels as soft as right after I put it on even like 10 hours later. I dont know for sure if its just the perfect combination of my skin and this stuff together or what,....but it works great.

Call Now !!

Heres how to order.......

Bathe in olive oil.

Humidifier, yes.

See a dermatologist. Might be something more in depth than just dry skin.

There is this new moisturizer that came out from clinique...it's so good!!!! Believe me it's something else. I have very dry skin because of the medicine I have to put on my face for acne and that is the only thing that hydrates it. It's amazing how good it makes your skin feel!!!

actually, NAIVE, about a yr ago consumers report magazine extensively tested a number of these skin moisturizers. you know what was #1??? Vaseline Intensive Care skin lotions. And this product beat out lotions the cost 10 times as much.

Buy it and use it.

That may be but it's always good to test out other things. Because Vaseline is good for millions it does not necessarily mean it will be good for me :)

I have been writing down all the tips on a piece of paper and I'm going to go out and try some of these...

I haven't tried Olay body wash! I will definitely be getting some of that!

SexKitten, I didn't know that too much oil can actually dry your face out more!

I'm going to get some different foundation today....here I was thinking it was helping and I could have actually been making it worse! I'm so glad you told me that!!!

I haven't tried aveda for the face....where do I get that at? Would Dillard's have it maybe??

EC that sounds like a long routine! :p

But maybe I will try that out....I am getting DESPERATE here. I'm so sick and tired of this dry skin that never seems to go away!

Here is what I usually use:

I take showers, I use a loofah and Dove Cool Moisture body wash. After that I use Jergen's lotion. I use Eucerin moisturizer on my face (which I kind of don't care much for, because it looks greasy) so I'm definitely wanting a face cream that is less greasy looking. At night, I do put Vaseline no my face..not too thick I just rub it in. Not even that has helped..I've thrown out the Cloderm long ago that I got from my dermatologist because it just didn't help at all....

Oh and Alpha...I don't think I could stand to skip showers no matter how dry my skin got!

Ok....today I'm going to go out and buy some of this stuff...the dry skin is not only embarrassing but I also think its making me look older!

I *cannot* have that! :o

Unless you sweat a lot or are oily (which, obviously, you aren't), there's no reason to shower every day. My dermatologist ordered me to not do so, actually. Your arms and legs are likely not that grubby and all that washing just strips your natural oils off. Grab a washrag and sponge bath the rest of you on non-shower days and you should be fine.

and i'm a massive tool, it's aveeno, not aveda...try positively radiant moisture or skin relief...(aveda also has face stuff, but i've never tried it!)

Maybe you're using too much crap. Shower every day, but put more time in between showers. For instance...shower Monday morning, then shower Tuesday night. Then Thursday morn. It's like your skin doesn't even have time or means to produce it's own natural oils. Hell....idunno. Sounds like you're using a lot of crap tho.

I read through this whole thread. How is your diet? Do you get enough EFAs? Are you on like a low fat diet? There are skin and ahir vitamins you can take.

Also, never shower longer than 5 minutes (the longer you are in the shower, the more it dries out your skin) and moisturize right after you get out.
