soccorsilly
I have heard that age (not degenerating vision) is the cause for the need to have reading glasses. I have never heard of a time frame for the lasic to not work, but more that when you hit 40 you "may" need reading glasses. I had my lasic done at 39 and I am now 43 and there is no sign that I need reading glasses. Even if I got 4 years out of theporcedure, it was worht it to me.

I don't need glasses to read right now, I just need them for far away (actually for anything past a book length away)! What's up with that? I might get 7 years free of contacts or glasses???? wow. so if i'm reading correctly, your lasik surgery was no good and now you might get 7 years free of contacts or glasses? no refund for your surgery? how much did it cost anyway? (by the way, that deal is from the "original" Lasik Eye Surgery Center. supposedly, the people who started this whole thingy.)
moimeme
I have heard that age (not degenerating vision) is the cause for the need to have reading glasses. Yup. It's age-related inability to focus the lens.

I think it's worth it to not have to wear contacts or glasses anymore. My surgery is scheduled for 11am on Friday.
Rosalind
Originally posted by jacquelyn so if i'm reading correctly, your lasik surgery was no good Wrong. The procedure does not have a shelf-life. Presbyopia happens to most people regardless if they had laser vision correction. The surgery to correct presbyopia is still in it's early, experimental stages, it hasn't been perfected yet. And even if a person was already wearing progressive eye glasses, Lazik will still be beneficial, slipping on a pair of reading glasses when needed, is no big deal. Especially when you consider everything else (particulary items in the distance) are chrystal clear. Originally posted by jacquelyn I'm only wishing that my bf would spend more money on his precious eyes. He doesn't have to. Many reputable clinics, with doctors who have high credentials, and have successfully performed thousands of these surgeries - will sometimes have a yearly 'special', or two. You're b/f isn't going to get any less for his money...in fact, he's just being a smart shopper.
brashgal
If you get the monovision (one eye sees up close, one sees far away) you can delay the issue with Presbyopia. I am pushing 47 and had the surgery two years ago, I have NOOO problems reading but if I've been reading or on the computer for a period of time it does take awhile for my distance vision to sharpen up. They told me I might want to get glasses for driving if it continues to be a problem (so it will help my eye that sees up close see far away). I still see 20/25 or 20/30 which is a heck of a lot better than the 20/600 I was seeing....

Before I decided to have the surgery (I was already wearing progressive eyeglasses), I went through several pairs of contact lenses that were supposed to give me monovision. It just didn't work out for me. Major dizziness, headaches, unable to focus - near or far, unless of course I would cover one eye if I wanted to read, then cover the other to see distance. My brain just wouldn't allow them to mesh together nicely. Were you extremely nearsighted? Did they leave one eye 'under-corrected' so that you would still be able to see up close? brashgal
Yes, I was extremely nearsighted and yes, one eye was undercorrected. Guess I was lucky, my brain is able to cope. I had worn glasses for 38 years so decided I did not want to have the surgery and have to wear reading glasses, I wanted complete freedom.
Author jacquelyn
i feel so embarassed. i don't know any of these terms because i've never had any problem with seeing. i'm only 20 though. so if someone can please clarify all those "eye terms" that'll be one heck of a help! by the way, is it bad to only get your eyes checked once out of your entire life? especially when you've never had any problems seeing whatsoever? ConfusedInOC
Ok! Had the surgery yesterday and today, almost 24 hours later, I am "almost" seeing 20/20. I have to let my eyes heal and settle down. I am off to my first of a few follow up appointments. I've looked at my eyes in the mirror and I do not see where the Doctor cut anything. She did a GREAT job! For anyone worried about this, as long as you go to a reputable Doctor you should be fine. I chose Dr. Garrana in Long Beach. If you want a referral, ask me
Author jacquelyn
yay for you! i'm glad everything worked out great for you. do you think I can get her number?
soccorsilly
Glad to hear it. I love mine and am so glad I spent the $$$! It does not matter to me if I got ripped off or not. My eyes are great and (at risk of sounding like a Mastercard commercial--is priceless) As to the monovision--my doc said that it could be done but that she has had near zero success with men. The women tend to take to it easier...go figure!

It's "Premier Laser Sight" in Long Beach. I can't find what I did with my card. Dr. Garrana. She has a special going on. Normally it's $4800 but I got $1k off so I jumped at it. I had the Custom Wavefront. I can see 20/20 already. I could almost read the 20/15 line today. She said that was good as it takes three weeks for everything to settle down. I am praying for 20/
jellybean
Originally posted by soccorsilly I was paying like $2200 per eye. OMFG!!!....it all makes sense to me now. I kept wondering why the waiting room at the laser eye clinic was PACKED WITH AMERICANS!??! Oh, man...not only do you have a pathetic health-care system, even when you DO pay cash - they rip you off. I went to the very, VERY best doc in in Vancouver (who only uses the most advanced, high-tech equipment available). The regular price is 1,750. He had a special, so I lucked out and was only charged 1,099. BTW, my vision now has been corrected to BETTER than 20/20..... and when he feels that the procedure for presbyopia is totally safe, I will be able to get it at NO CHARGE!!! Sorry, folks....what you're paying is just appalling.

It calmed me a bit.
