Just had the oddest customer service experience

Ok, so I am sitting in my car right now, kind of surprised. I just left World Market, and was helped by a very nice guy who was EXTREMELY flamboyant, extremely feminine... Very much stereotypical male, flaming homosexual. Anyway, like I said he was very nice, talked a lot, gave me 10% off just because, interrupted everything I said (which was fine) but then...

 

The cashier who was behind him was checking out a young woman and the guy turned around and said to the other customer "you don't want to work with that fag**t"

 

I had been smiling the whole time and I felt my mouth just DROP. I don't know if he was high or what... Obviously he was just joking, but wow!!! I am speechless.

Ok, so the cashier told called the guy that was helping you the f- word?

 

Well, who knows, maybe they have an understanding and can joke with each other like that:confused:?

I don't understand who dropped the "F" bomb(?). Was it a customer or the cashier? Could have been his boyfriend maybe?

Sorry, I was typing on my phone in a hurry.

 

It was my cashier who called the other cashier the f word. My cashier was in the process of checking me out when he (my cashier) turned around and said what he did. I am sure it was a joke or something between the two, but I thought it was kind of a weird thing to say in front customers.

Well, hang on - was it the comment that offended you, or its timing?

 

You're right about the timing, but as I said, maybe that's how they roll/banter between themselves....

Moreso the timing, and I was more in shock than anything. I suppose I just never had anyone in customer service while actively interacting with me turn around and call someone something like that.

 

I have had people talk silliness to each other, goof around and such while speaking with me, but flat out cussing or dropping a derogatory word... never.

Ms Faust, completely normal to be taken agape by such commentary of your cashier.

 

Some folks need to clean their mouthfilters..particularly in front of customers.

No, no...I agree.... I was just utterly confused by the who, how, when, what... what - ?!

 

We have extremely stringent regulations in place regarding discussions with and about customers.

Shop floor? NO discussion about another customer, attitude, dress sense, aroma (trust me, some people think a Bath is the plural of 'Bar'... with a lisp....)

 

Even if a following customer has a comment to make about other customers, or something about the customer they've just followed? We remain tactful and discreet.

 

Absolutely no profanities, swear words or cussing.... We're even discouraged from using the word 'bloody', which by any current standard is positively tame....

 

And chit chat among ourselves is also scrutinised and regulated.

 

I mean, we CAN banter and have a laugh, it's not as rigid as it sounds... The other day, during a light, good-humoured exchange between a customer and me, my colleague asked me if they'd reduced my tablets again (!) and I replied "No, but they've promised to only use the straitjacket on Fridays...." which caused a giggle (you had to be there.... :D )

 

But yeah - the kind of comment used here? Pretty sure I'd be up on a Conduct disciplinary with a crack like that....

Ms. Faust, they probably knew each other well enough and you just happened to be there when there was some joking around going on.

 

Calling someone the f-word if you're a homosexual talking to or about another isn't a big deal at all, in some circles. The same way that African Americans decided to take the power out of the N-word, a lot of people in the gay community have adopted the same idea with the F-word.

 

If you think what you saw was shocking, hang around a drag queen bar for a night. You won't be able to pick your jaw up off the floor the whole night! I have some gay friends and the things they say to each other is hysterically funny but they do realize, around other people, this stuff can be downright shocking so they don't get too crazy around the general public or strangers. They usually reserve it for parties and bars.

I would have reported this to a manager immediately. Regardless of the relationship of the two cashiers, a place of business is no place to be speaking like that, especially in front of customers.

 

I would have done the same had it been any of those famous "seven words you can never say on television".

I hope I didn't sound like I was implying this flamboyant attitude at work is okay because it's not. I wouldn't worry about it too much, though. This guy being flamboyant to that extent is going to get him fired from a lot of places of employment until he learns to stop.

Oops sent preemptively ... read the explanation thx Faust ...I wasn't sure if the customer said the f word or ...

 

Ya I would have called the manager later and explained how it made you feel uncomfortable...this lack of candor is just inappropriate ...file that lingo under "words when out with friends"
