Eternal Sunshine
In my current job (19 months now), I clicked with the interview panel personality wise immediately. We joked and laughed through it and it didn't even seem like an interveiw. Although, yeah I had the skills/experience they were looking for too. I think you need it all: skils/experience/personality. Since they can already see your skills/experience on the CV, sans clarifying some details, interviews are mostly about personality. Unfortuentaly, there are many racial and age related prejudaces too..
Myragal
There is no generic employer. Everyone hiring is an individual. Here's what I suggest. No way of knowing but if you have been to interviews where 25 individuals have been hired then how many of them didn't last 3 months (5 ?). I would write a short letter to the person who interviewed you at about the 2 week mark 'after' you think the job was filled...and again at the 2 month mark. A simple letter saying that you are still available and can start any time convenient. There is always a chance that an employer will call a new employee in after a couple weeks or months and say 'sorry, it's not working out (or the new employee quits). There is a vacancy and they want to fill it immediately instead of going through another hiring process. I bring this up because it is exactly what I have done when hiring staff on our ward. The chosen candidate doesn't work out and I have been contacted by a past applicant.
edgygirl
Unfortunately this might be playing a part on it. If you're in the US, many Americans act weird around people from a different ethnical background. It's almost as if they just can't relate. Duh. Although I'm white I'll prob always be considered somewhat of a foreigner as I come from another country and most times I try to play it as an advantage, I try to convey I'm a wordly person, understand different perspectives, have international experience, etc. Still a few traditional hiring managers just don't know how to talk with people from different backgrounds and that's a harsh reality we have to deal with. Their loss though Thanks! That's a good advice. I'm from a different ethnical background and the vibe is definitely different.
nescafe1982
All we can do is our best. Job hunting is seriously an exercise in managing mass rejection. I'm sorry, OP. But keep plugging, refining your materials, and interviewing widely. You only need one 'yes' in the end. If you have friends in your industry, try mock interviewing with them. It may turn up nothing... but if there is something that you're doing that could be turning off an interviewer, it'd be good to know it, right? But really, you could be presenting as the perfect candidate and still not be the lucky winner. In these times, it's all a numbers game. If 33 apps gets your 7 interviews and no offers, double the number of applications if you can. And most importantly, be kind to yourself when facing rejections, because chances are it's not you at all.
katiegrl
I agree. It usually takes me 2-3 months and I am able to land a job. It's been 6 months for me and I'm currently employed. Right now I haven't been as active since opportunities are severely limited around the holidays unless you're in retail. Do you mean you're still unemployed? If so, how do you get by financially? Unemployment Insurance? If so, how long does that last? I have always wondered this. How people who remain unemployed for long periods of time (due to no fault of their own) support themselves, etc.
