What makes a person normal?

Recommended Posts

So in the past I have been told that I am strange and weird. I am not sure if I should feel down about this because I have been told about this my whole life, but for the most part, I carry myself like a normal person would. I may display some odd behavior, and I am sure that people everywhere are not without their quirks. I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I have often had trouble reaching out to people, whether it's to make friends or to try pursuing a woman I am interested in. However, people have told me that I am a nice guy, so I try to be kind and respectful to people at all times.

Regarding my behavior, I try to work on some quirks that I have, so it is not like I am unaware of my own character flaws. I know some people have given me flack for how quiet I am in the workplace, but I am quiet because I try to maintain my focus on my tasks, while everyone else is just chatting away. As for other quirks, if one can call them that, I have been told that it seems a bit odd with how I talk, when I use proper grammar or when I use bigger words than others would use. I may exhibit some eccentricities on occasion, but I have seen people out there who are a lot more unconventional than myself.

For the most part, I just see myself as just a regular guy who may have quirks, but seriously, who doesn't have quirks? How do you define "normal"?

Everyone's weird and strange to someone else. I wouldn't sweat it, E-Square. It's good to be self-aware but it's also ok to accept yourself as you are. If you do, others will do too :).

One of my dearest friends is Aspy. The fact that she's not 'normal' is one of the reasons I love her so much. She's far more interesting than so many others around me.

i guess i'd define it as anyone without a mental illness, significant physical impairment, or addiction, b/c those three things, imo, severely impact daily function and would make you fairly abnormal to most other 'normal' people.

Imo, all humans are mentally ill to varying degrees. Many of us are honest about our mental illnesses, while others who are in denial about theirs may perceive the rest of us as "abnormal".

I would say not to let other person subjective opinions bother you. They're usually motivated by something within themselves and not meant to be helpful to you.

I say all that without knowing exactly what your "few quirks" are. You're not eating live mice are you?

we are not all mentally ill to varying degrees. you're showing ignorance about mental illness. it seriously affects brain function and behavior... a majority of people are not walking around with brain impairments... they're just outside your own range of normal.

In my previous job, I've worked with teenagers who have Aspergers. They are one of the sweetest kids ever! So polite, cooperative and very well-behaved.

There is no 'normalcy'. It's always better to be the quiet unassuming type rather the obnoxious jerk who's always yelling to get his way.

Don't worry about your quirks, I'm sure you're alright!

Happy soon-to-be 2016! :bunny:

Ha ha ha ha:laugh: my dad has schizophrenia, my mum has BPD, my grandmother was a manic depressive with suicidal tendencies, both my maternal and paternal grandfathers were narcissistic pedophiles and several of my cousins are also pedophiles and that's not the end of it....but to give you some good news, my con-artist uncle was recently released from jail.

If you think mental illness is genetic, there is actually no scientific data to prove this. Rather, there is plenty of scientific evidence which links mental illness to environmental triggers-trauma of all kinds. For example, an event as benign as tripping over a rock and hurting one's knee can get stored in the subconscious brain as a traumatic event and can be expressed in the individual as a general anxiety of which they are completely unaware of it's origins. If you want to learn more about mental illness, read Peter Levine's books. He is one of the top authorities on the topic.

'Normal', societally, is what society, in general, accepts as acceptable to society. Depart too far from societal norms and get labeled all kinds of things, or socially shunned, or both. In extreme cases, society seeks to use laws to expunge the abnormal from its ranks. That happens every day. When enough pushback occurs, wars break out. We're getting there now. Normal will be redefined.

Same train of thought as you and open communication about whats on his (and your minds).. There will never be true 'normal',as we all have our faults and weak moments, these are normal. I'm going out of my head with my work, while my ex is still doing the same self destructive things(not my concern)..To me,anymore...'normal' is how much of it you're willing to deal with, before it's no longer normal..

Who is the one responsible to define "normal"? You're good enough the way you are. Just be yourself. Do not worry about what other people define as normal. :)

A 'normal' person is actually a fictional person made up by people studying demographics (usually for either research or marketing purposes) that embodies the average of all people studied.
