Hi has anyone tried hypnosis? Does that really improve a person's mental well-being?

I tried it for smoking...didnt work.

 

I think its all in the head. If you want it to work, maybe it will. I didnt, at that time, really WANT to quit smoking, even though I kept saying I did.

 

Eventually, I did it on my own

Yep I tried as one of many things on my path to overcoming Obsessive compulsive disorder. I am sure it helps some people.

It didnt help me. The guy said I was resisting it though, even though I was very open to it, and wanted change...something in my brain was hanging on to thoughts/things I had been obsessing on, and did not want to give them up.

It might work if you're able to be hypnotized. A hypnotist gave a show at my workplace once and I asked him if I could be hypnotized - he looked into my eyes and said 'no way' :laugh: He had successfully hypnotized several of the folks there, though, and it was interesting to hear what they had to say about it afterward.

It has very little scientific credibility. Its likely the effect of hypnoticsm are a combination of the subjects expectations going into it and the desire to please the hypnotist (google Hawthorne Effect).

 

There was a time when some viewed it as a plausible physchoanalytic tool, but that soon gave way when it was discovered that subjects under the "state of hipnosis" would believe "memories" which were ridiculous (alien abductions, devil worshiping rituals) or provable falsehoods.
