The End of the World - A Biblical Perspective

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find information about the 2nd coming of Christ. And I can't.

Moose - I tried to look up one of your verses that you had referred to but could not even locate such a verse. It was one that you referenced to in another thread of EC's about the end of the world. I have no real Bible here on hand at work, only ones at home, but I do have online access here. I find online Bibles a little harder to navigate through.

If you, or anyone else has more information, could you please provide me with some?

I must not be googling the correct terminology. I've searched online Bibles.

IMO, the end is near. Laugh - I don't care. The signs are clear to me. The signs that I know of, anyway. If you can be of any help with referencing me to the right points, please do so. Thanks!

The Rapture: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 describes a miraculous event when Christ will descend from the heavens. Conservative Protestants believe that faithful "born again" Christians who have previously died will be resurrected, rise from their graves, and ascend to meet Jesus in the sky. Immediately afterwards, "born again" Christians who had not died will also ascend into the air. They will abandon cars, airplanes, factory jobs, homes, families, friends etc. Since the vast majority of humans are not "born again," most people will remain behind on earth.

So....what happens when they're left here on Earth? I thought they were supposedly going to Hell for not following Christ?

Their bodies stay here? Their souls? They stay here and party with the best of 'em? Or what?

Or is that just Protestants that believe that? Not the Christians? HELP!

Maybe that will help unemployment drop! ;)

Seriously, do you know people who believe that they will rise though the air? It's a metaphor isn't it? More like a plague will sweep through and people will die and their 'souls' will ascend or remain, and isn't there something about the earth will reek with the stench of those who have discarded their bodies -- or was that in some pamphlet I read from some church?

Hahaha. I'm not even Christian! But I love studying religion and read the bible several times cover to cover (it never DID make any sense to me...)

Many mainline Protestant denominations -- including many Reformed theologians and some Baptists -- believe that the Kingdom of God is present in the world today through the presence of the the heavenly reign of Christ, the Bible, the Holy Spirit and Christianity. Both good and evil will continue in the world until the current Church Age ends suddenly as Christ returns to the sky above the earth. The Rapture follows. The Redeemed are transported to heaven where they will adopt spiritual bodies. The majority of humanity will be sent to Hell at this time for eternal punishment. The world will be abandoned.

I think philosophically the instance when people rise bodily into heaven is reminiscent of Mary the Mother of God who rose bodily into heaven, if I'm not mistaken...

Sounds like aliens to me. :lmao:

Someday the sun is going to burn out and the planet will die. There will be people on earth who see that as the second coming and the darkness and death of the planet as something described in the Bible and they will believe it; but it will still only be the burning out of the sun and the result will be the same.

What does the Bible say will happen to the animals/non-human life forms on the planet?

Humans are linear thinkers. The concept of compassion and forgiveness for a being that is omnipotent, omnipresent, and eternal, would not be anything that a human schmear could comprehend. We are like ants compared to a being like that, doncha know.

I thought according to biblical theology, animals and non-human lifeforms are a non-issue. Animals don't go to heaven. They have no souls.

(I don't ascribe to this, I'm just parroting the theology I learned in catholic school)

Or is that just Protestants that believe that? Not the Christians

AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

OK. The word 'Christian' refers to ALLLLLL people who believe that Christ is the Son of God. That means Protestants AND Catholics.

However, the evangelical and fundamentalist Christians have managed to usurp the word 'Christian' and people seem to be too f*&^%^$%& dumb to comprehend that FUNDIES ARE NOT THE ONLY CHRISTIANS.

Cripes.

Now, Fundies and some Protestant sects maybe believe in this Rapture crap, but if you read a Bible that has some SCHOLARSHIP in it and that has references, you will understand that this is an apocalyptic tale, a type of story which was extremely common in those days. It was not the only one of its kind in other words.

Besides, people have been predicting the end of the world since the time of Christ, when Paul and others warned people not to marry and to prepare themselves because they figured Christ would return in a few years.

Matthew 24

42"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Sheesh...chill a little. I meant different religions other than Protestants. I'm learning - and at least I'm not afraid to admit it.

You don't have to get all self-righteous up in herr.

That is why I fell away from the Bible, well, one of the reasons. The whole thing about "soul". Animals have distinct personalities and quirks and all the same emotions that humans have, but they do not communicate the way we do. They don't understand "lies" and "deceipt" but they sure do understand "love" and "tolerance"! Animals have feelings too. They can be hurt or afraid or happy and joyous. They can feel pity and compassion too---I've seen it and I believe there are some studies done with dolphins that will support it. Intelligence levels do not equal emotions, or vice versa.

So, what is "soul"? The ability to communicate using tools? There are some preachers who do believe that animals have souls also and have found scripture to either support that thought, or at least creates enough doubt.

I know what happens to the animals/plants when the planet ends, but doesn't the Christian God address this in any of the Bibles?

No Hokey, the Christian theology dictates that animals have no souls - nothing happens to them because according to the spiritual world they do not exist. They were put here to be food and beasts of burden and stuff. Which I said before. Unless you have me on ignore. :p

Nothing to do with being 'self-righteous'. Just ranting because I'm so tired of people perpetuating the same old tired dumb beliefs. And not just yours. Frankly, it's frightening how little people know about stuff like this but how quick they are to judge/believe anyway. Is nobody on this planet ever taught to find out facts before they make decisions? Or did that go out of style?
