Are affairs common in your company?

Really shocking replies. I have never seen or experienced this. I thought something like this being common in ones work place was a thing of the past.

If you are large enough it happens. However, the extent depends a lot on company policy and adherence.

I've worked at 7 ranging from small to large.

Current company has strict guidelines and enforces. If caught you're walked out after the investigation if it turns up positive.

I think it's company specific too. And maybe a bit of luck.

I have worked in some of the same industries mentioned in this thread and have never seen any rampant cheating.

It goes on everywhere Popsi, even when and where you don't see it. Not just in business either - probably half your neighbors are having affairs.

The company I work for is stable, good benefits, but a little bit lower paying, so it typically draws family oriented people.

I'm not saying there aren't people who have affairs, but it is definitely not something that anyone would be advertising and it would be very removed from work life.

Overall even the divorce rate of people I work with, is a fraction of the national average I would guess though.

Affairs are very common in my whole industry! Because of what I do, I move from company to company pretty frequently and it varies, but yes..very common.

I had the head of a company corner me in his office and try to pull my shirt off once. Not only was I advised NOT to do anything bc I'd be blacklisted, but my direct boss got angry with me when I asked her advice..because she was already sleeping with him!

I was very young and naive at the time and I didn't press charges. I did laugh when he showed up at work with a cold sore though..I knew my boss got them too so I'm betting he got them from her. Ha!

Also just to add, my industry has a notoriously high rate of people with larger than life egos and senses of entitlement.

I have access to the email accounts of 1200 employees. Quick key word search revealed it's rampant here.

They're discussing their affairs on company email?

those are probably love emails.

got sent one of those accidentally once, it was meant for my colleague with the same name and slightly different last name so our work mail address is different in only one letter.

it was super awkward... there was a picture attached, too... LOL.

That's still kinda dumb. Affairs are for free-mail services - that's why they exist. ;)

it is stupid -- the risk of being caught is so much bigger but then again... some folks want EXACTLY that.

i love you & i miss you - kind of mails.

Well it's my job, and everyone here knows the policy about work emails, inter-office relationships - especially where there is a direct reporting line, and privacy expectations. essentially, there is none.

But you'd be shocked ( or maybe not ) at what people continue to place on the corporate system.

Oh I was so young & naive. I could of set myself up for life pressing charges! Seriously, if you work for a company/industry where it's common young women are advised not to 'rock the boat' & get a reputation for being a trouble maker.

My first 'real' interview was with (who became) my female boss. Her manager had to agree but rather than having a 2nd interview he just walked in, big smiles, looked me from top too tail & said "oh yes! She will definitely do!" Winked at me & left!! My boss said "Don't worry you won't have to work with him much!". Ugh!!

Different company...

Once I raised the issue that ALL of my male reports were earning more than me, their boss. I was told that as a woman I would never be the "primary bread winner" so it was less important how much I took home!! (I still can't move my pension because of ongoing legal action) I was too young. In hindsight I was stupid!!

Our CEO put in writing that I shouldn't wear trouser suits. I should wear short skirts & blouses because I had "the shape for it" & it made for a better working environment!! (Same short, sweaty bald guy I had to dance with!! I've still got a copy of that letter years later!!)

I think if senior management are having affairs the company becomes organized to encourage affairs. Frequent nights in hotels, partners NEVER included in company parties, lots of alcohol & company jollies. "Family men" are spoken about as if it's a weakness, 'under the thumb' of the 'old ball & chain' etc.

My H has worked for a company that was the opposite. Very family orientated. I was frequently invited to take part in events as his wife. Didn't stop him having an A but it was far less common. I know that some of his department (that we're still friends with) would be horrified to know that their 'friendship' was an A.

It's so sad because I had such a low view of "pathetic old men sniffing after the young assistants". I always hated it & had very derogatory views of those men. It breaks my heart on yet another level that decades later MY love became one of them. :(

I'm a firefighter and I can tell you that woman love the rescue guys it makes it easy to go to the darkside. And I have seen it destroy families. I think hospitals might have the highest rate of affairs. Not many woman can deal with marrying a firefighter,police,doctor,nurse.etc. My wife married me when I was already a fireman so it was an easy transition. She got used to me working long hours and not being home every third day but some woman and man can't handle that part of the job. For me I just know that I have everything I need at home.

I know it was common at my former company when it was smaller and more start-up like. As the company grew I saw less and less of it out in the open but it probably still was going on. There is definitely a negative attitude against women in my industry. Lot's of talk that women don't know what they are talking about, that they got promotions by opening their legs, etc. One manager there even told my friend that she should stay at home with the kids because that's where a woman belongs. Most of the women in positions similar to mine got their work taken away and fired when they complained. Many workplaces in my field also have things that the guys do like hotties lists and such.

My current company has several husband and wife employees. I have heard of only one affair. Only the woman was outed and fired. From what I heard the man was pretty high up and didn't have any negative ramifications but no one knows who it was. I have a whole thread right now because one guy there I believe is angling for an affair.

Overall I've had several bosses and coworkers hit on me over the year. One place I worked several coworkers actively tried to break up my relationship to get me with a guy in the office who wanted me. All but two were married. I don't want a married man or a man I work with so it never went anywhere.

I always wondered about this. I can't believe what people have IMed me about at work through the corporate network.

Pictures...videos...racist memes...you name it, and I can find it on the network. One employee in development actually built an encrypted folder on the network and used it to store almost a terabyte of porn.

Didn't think anyone would find it I guess.

I'm not the guy in IT, so I don't know how careful he was or wasn't. I'm just the guy IT calls when they find something.

I don't know about cheating or actual affairs going on where I work, but I do observe the innocent "flirting" that goes on---and we all know how it begins..a simple conversation. Things like this make me want to NEVER get married.

email and instant messaging has made flirting SO easy that people who normally would never take a shot can do so safely via IM, by sending something so vague that it could easily pass as a harmless note or even a mistake.

I've seen people send something like " you look gorgeous today" and then reply with

"oops! wrong window! I meant to send that to my wife" when there is no response or a negative one.

Still, some of these get reported to me as it's really the oldest trick in the newest book.

  • 2 weeks later...

True! It happened to me last month.

Because of my line of work, usually most men in my previous offices were either gay or effeminate... so not much happened. The company I am working for now, a Fortune 500, is full of "male" men, and it didn't take long for the first one to hit on me on my 2nd/3rd month there.

We were having dinner at a hotel with a few team members during a work trip, and this man in his 50s asked me for my cellphone... I thought nothing of it, as we sometimes have to work together even though we are not in the same office. One minute later, I got a message from him, still in front of everyone, asking... if I thought he was handsome. LOL. I couldn't believe it, as we have never flirted before or anything. I am sure he'd love to have me as a fling on lonely hotel nights during our team work trips :p

I am sure that in most offices/companies "There are more things in heaven and earth...." than we can dream of :p

I've read that if there are 50 mixed sex people working together someone is screwing, married or not.

I laughed at that. Then I became one of them.
