lilmiscassie92
I apologize this is kind of long, but if anyone could take the time to read and respond I would greatly appreciate it!! I'm moving out of state this summer for graduate school and am currently just working in the meantime. I am a substitute teacher, but last summer I found a seasonal job as a server at one of the hotels. I have worked in the service industry before, and really dreaded it. However, I wanted the income while the students were on summer break. The hotel ended up keeping me permanently, and I am still at this job (I teach part time as well). This job is so stressful, and I feel like my body has been breaking down. I have degenerative discs in my lower back, which I haven't had to get an adjustment for 2 years because I have been working my core/exercising etc.. Now with this job I have had to go to the chiropractor a handful of times in the last few months. I have been waking up with intense calf pains, and I drink plenty of water. The hours are crazy; I've had to close and then the next day come in at 5am. I have horrible allergies and they sent both servers home/inside and kept me by myself this past week when it was raining all day standing by the pool and I made NO money. They told me they would probably be closing asap when they sent the two girls away, but that didn't happen. Now, my allergies got so bad I had to go to urgent care this weekend and get on prednisone which is giving me crazy side effects, and I had to miss work (including my teaching job). I'm supposed to go on a cruise in two and a half weeks, and now I'm worried I'm going to be sick! Also, I want to add that I have told the manager that I prefer to work nights in the inside restaurant lobby, which works out because all of the other waitresses prefer to work outside by the pool. However, he scheduled me there once and since I handled it "so well", he wants to keep me up there to make money. Why ask what my preference is then! We never get any breaks, and I've gone whole shifts running around like a chicken as the only server/bus girl/hostess/take out person. I have gotten nauseous and dizzy, and can't even go in the back to have a gronola bar because it gets so busy and everyone and their mom is looking for the only server in the restaurant. I have put on several pounds because the hours and inconsistent schedule is driving my body whack. I've also had problems with the scheduling. They know I teach Mondays, and I asked not to close on Sunday nights but they have consistently scheduled me Sunday nights. The only reason why I have stayed is because the money is great. However, I'm seriously consider quitting slightly earlier and going back to teaching full time until I move in July. I used to make it work on the teaching salary (I'm very frugal). My mom suggested I go on my vacation at the end of this month and see how I feel when I return. Edited March 13, 2016 by lilmiscassie92
preraph
If it's destroying you physically, quit it! I've never been able to lift things without hurting myself. There are other jobs. Don't break your body down. And incidentally, since you have that problem, I will just mention that having kids will be the worst thing for it. A friend of mine has given herself lifelong back pain from the constant lifting of her firstborn. And there's no way to avoid that unless you have a full-time nanny who lives in and you take everywhere. There just isn't. Kids get really heavy before they can walk, and then even though they can walk, they still want you to carry them and it takes a very strong person to say no to it.
d0nnivain
Your health needs to be a priority. Before you quit however, talk to a lawyer who specializes in workers' compensation cases. You may be able to put in a claim for an occupational disability for the physical problems you developed as a result of working there.
Satu
Always place your health higher than any job. Good money is nice, but good health is better.
whichwayisup
Yes quit your job and go teach full time or find another part time job that doesn't stress you out. Why do something that you hate and don't enjoy? Your well being and mental health is more important than anything. Give your notice and say bye bye to the hotel business. And don't feel bad about doing so, this is your life and you have to be content and feel fulfilled.
