ConfusedInOC
One of the things I am learning about my own self-esteem is that I did not have focused, attainable goals set in my life. This weekend I learned that only the top 5% income earners in the US are the only ones that have written out their goals in life. Most of us don't even have goals, much less have them written out. Having goals helps you feel more confident and self-assured because you have focus and know what you want in life. This is very important to self-esteem. Here's an acronym (and yes, it's spiritual) that will help you understand what your goals should be based on. F - Focused A - Attainable I - Individual T - Trackable H - Heartfelt Make sure the goals you set meet the F.A.I.T.H. based requirements and do not involve anyone else. I have set out about 10 goals to complete this year. They all meet the F.A.I.T.H. based requirements. So -- have FAITH that you can complete them by writing them out. You'll feel better about yourself, especially as you check off your completed goals. It's not very hard to do but the rewards for doing so will last a lifetime. Cheers. millefiori
You know, that is actually a great idea. I'm actually quite disorientated right now, have been for a while, but that was a good suggestion to solve my problems step by step.

Many people do not set goals because they are unsure HOW to set them. They often make lofty goals that are hard to achieve or they include other factors in their goals that are out of their control. Once you follow the F.A.I.T.H. based goal setting technique, you will soon find you are able to achieve these goals which sets off a chain reaction of building your self-confidence in blocks as each goal is achieved. It's important to start with small goals and build up to larger ones. Once you have tasted success, it becomes a regular part of your routine and simply by achieving your goals you will become a successful person, deep in confidence, self-assuredness and self-respect. And who in their right mind doesn't want to be around successful people?

HokeyReligions
I have seen the FAITH system before. I use a slightly different system, but I have had written goals since I was in high-school and they change and are updated regularly. I'm old-school and use the Franklin method. I'm sure not one of the top 5% in wage earners though! But, financial wealth has never been at the top of my goal list, although financial security has a couple of chapters in my goal book. I attained that goal once in my life and then all hell broke lose and I lost everything. I have not been able to reattain that same level since, but my goals have changed to reflect recent changes in my life and my family. Setting a goal is only part of it -- you have to create a plan to attain those goals, and have contingency plans too! Recognize short term and long term goals and plan accordingly; plus be flexible enough to make and accept changes.

Author ConfusedInOC
Harvard Business School researchers have taken a vital interest in what makes the difference in success or failure for people of similar backgrounds and educational standards. Their studies find that 3% of people are successful, 30% are moderately successful and 67% just exist. The significant difference for the 3% who are successful is that they have written down, specific goals. The 30% who are moderately successful have a general idea of where they are going but don't have any goals formalised. The rest are happy to watch the world go by. What is interesting is that people in the 30% category only need to put in a small effort to jump into the next group. The secret behind the effort is 'the development of habits and strategies which support the achievement of clear goals'. Benjamin Franklin discovered this secret the hard way. He was receiving constant criticism about his negative communication. He listed all the elements in his life that he had the courage to say did not support him or his relationships. He worked on one of these elements each month. He had set goals to develop new successful habits. The Benefits of Goal Making People who set and get their goals are winners. Some have exceptional determination and long-term commitment and application. Just think of the thrill of the athlete who wins the Olympic medal. Goalgetters have a special glow - feeling fulfilled and happy in their achievements. Think of a time you set a goal and steadily worked towards it to ultimate success. How many of the following applied to you then: Clear and focused direction giving a sense of security and purpose. Maximum use of time. Enthusiasm is high for what you want. Moving steadily towards and achieving the results you really want and ultimate success. Boosted self-esteem, confidence and belief in your ability to make things happen and feel in control. Remember ... the greatest stress in life is that which comes from feeling out of control and powerless.

You're welcome. I am glad to see someone taking advantage of it. I can't take credit for it (that goes to Pastor Rick Warren) but the value of it, and in your self-esteem, there can be no doubt. Good luck to you.
