BrwnEyz13
I decided to put this in the self help section b/c i tend to be a shy person and this affects me at work. Well i work in a clothing store and am usually the front man who greets everyone and tells them what is on sale. The problem I am having is that I don't know how to ask open ended questions. I know it should be easy b/c all I have to do is find out more about the customer and what he/she wants. But I always end up asking questuions that lead to a dead end (yes and no answers). So can you give me soem exaples of open ended questions I could ask. My customers are usually female, age-wise it ranges from teens - mothers.

So can you give me soem exaples of open ended questions I could ask. My customers are usually female, age-wise it ranges from teens - mothers. Start by asking questions that begin with the following words: Who (Who do you know that...) What (What do you do that....) Why (Why do you do....) Where (Where do you do those...) When (When do you do those...) How (How do you do those...) Hope that helps
quankanne
also, think of posing your questions this way: instead of saying "are you looking for pants?" ask, "what sort of pants are you looking for?" "do you prefer them to be more fitted or relaxed fit?" which will lead into a discussion of how a relaxed fit size can sometimes be a smaller size than the person normally wears because of the cut. "where will you be wearing this piece of clothing/how will it be used?" is another good one, because some clothes can be dressed up or down == and we gals LOVE dual-duty clothes. "Will it be okay if it's a dry-clean only item?" well, no, because I want to be able to clean it as quickly as needed ... stuff like that. basically, just turn your "yes/no" question around. one thing I've found that helps me as a reporter is to notice something unique about the person I'm talking to – sometimes I'm meeting with someone who has an understanding about a certain subject that I have no idea what it's about, so asking them to help put it into simple terms is great. Or, going to people's homes, you notice the neatest things: one lady I met was an accomplished quilter, so I asked for tips for beginners, because it's something I wanted to do. Another guy collected pig figurines, so it was great hearing his story how he got started doing that, even though none of it ended up in the article I wrote. People enjoy when someone takes a positive interest in them, and women are pretty good about striking conversations anyplace (think lines at a public bathroom) over just about anything!
