Author TheArtist
By the way Aniela, what do you suffer from, if you don't mind me asking?
LydiaLong
I'm an expert on acid reflux. Don't drink vinegar. What you have to do is avoid the triggers: alcohol, chocolate, mint, caffeine, and highly fatty foods. Don't eat for 3 hours before bed. Take Mylanta before every meal and at bedtime. I'll send you a bill for the consultation.
MidwestUSA
Magnesium is something I've been taking in powder form recently, just before going to sleep, and it has that certain effect in the morning... I have been able to drink orange juice when I mix the powder into it. Normally, I have trouble with orange juice. I hate licorice. You couldn't pay me to eat it. Oh, I eat those things like candy! If you're taking magnesium for nerve conduction/muscle health, I use a bottle of magnesium citrate - the stuff they have you drink two bottles of before a colon procedure. It comes in grape and cherry now. I sat down and did the calculations once (using molecular weight and all that jazz). An 8 ounce bottle goes a long way. And it keeps you regular as clockwork. Before anyone buys a bottle and tries it, let me recheck that math overnight.

Before anyone buys a bottle and tries it, let me recheck that math overnight. I started taking it again, to relax me. I've been really anxious, and I think it's helped me to sleep. I finally found this Mag07 that was recommended by an author (for detoxing), and since chia seeds had me a little... uncomfortable, a couple of weeks ago, I bought it. If what I'm dealing with is gastroparesis, or something like it, then it also helps to get things moving along, rather than staying there too long (and causing other things to come back up). Unfortunately, spicy food is a no-no for me, no matter what, and I love it too much to give it up. This reminds me, though - I've had this awful taste/smell come up my throat at times. I really need to be good diet-wise. By the way: that Mag07 is like chalk. Ugh. If I could take capsules, I would use those instead.
whichwayisup
I know you said no citrus but isn't lemon a neutralizer? Hot water with lemon and a bit of honey. Hope you feel better and wish Dr. House was real and I could send him to you!

LittleTiger
I started with a cough a few months ago that wouldn't go away and was diagnosed with acid reflux. I didn't have any other symptoms. The doctor put me on PPIs, which 'cured' the cough but made me feel really ill. I stopped taking them and felt much better but the cough came back albeit not quite as badly. I read up on causes and treatments of acid reflux and the new line of thought is that it's caused by too little acid rather than too much. PPIs can make the problem worse if you take them for more than a few weeks so be prepared for kickback if you decide to come off them. Some people say apple cider vinegar helps but I can't drink it because it actually gives me heartburn and makes me want to vomit! I now drink freshly squeezed lemon juice in warm water first thing every morning and it seems to be working. It doesn't increase stomach acid but apparently stabilises it. I still get a slight coughy feeling occasionally but I've pinpointed that to having an empty stomach because, if I eat something, it usually goes away.
Author TheArtist
It's strange isn't it? I also put some of the symptoms down to an empty stomach because it does go away when I eat something. Something I've been reading recently is breathing. If you relax and watch how you breathe you'll most likely see that you're breathing from your chest rather than your stomach, which is the correct way of doing it. Take a look at babies or animals and you'll see their breath comes from the stomach, which means they're employing the diaphragm rather than the chest wall to draw breath. I've been doing this for a while now and it has become natural to my body again. Give it a go, it's really good! Benefits of Deep Breathing | LIVESTRONG.COM Also, meditation reduces adrenaline, which helps you to heal. I haven't done this for a while but I really need to get back into it. I'm not talking about the 'ohhhhmmm' stuff, and I was a bit skeptical/felt silly trying this at first, but my god do you feel amazing after 10 minutes of this. Honest! 10 minutes, whatever your state of health, it's amazing I tells you!
Aniela
I found a recipe for a flax seed tea, for reflux, in The Blender Girl's book. I'll type it up later, or put it in my picture section on my profile (I took a picture of it with my tablet).

Honest! 10 minutes, whatever your state of health, it's amazing I tells you! Yes, I breath from my chest! Years of learning to automatically hold in my stomach I think. Great for stomach muscles, terrible for relaxation. I definitely don't relax enough and the meditation is a great idea. I learned to meditate years ago and stopped when my life got too hectic to fit it in - how counterproductive is that! You've inspired me to get back into it! I was wondering if stress was a big contributor to my acid reflux. If it is, then correct breathing and meditation should have a really positive impact!

Yes, I breath from my chest! Years of learning to automatically hold in my stomach I think. Great for stomach muscles, terrible for relaxation. You've inspired me to get back into it! I was wondering if stress was a big contributor to my acid reflux. If it is, then correct breathing and meditation should have a really positive impact! I think many people do breathe from their chest. It's a build up of tension I think (and holding the stomach in, I've done that for years and have a really good posture - maybe it's not as natural as it first appears), and if you look at kids you'll see it's all coming from the belly. That YouTube link I posted takes you on a little visual journey and it's really relaxing, and I recommend doing that with your eyes closed rather than watching the video. Let me know if it helps.
