FolderWife
I wouldn't call myself a gossip...although that may be exactly what I am. My best friend and I work for the same company. If she hears or sees some drama, she always fills me in, and if I see or hear drama, I'll tell her. I have three people besides myself in my department. Sometimes, if they bring up some drama or what not, I'll give them my peice of the story, and they'll share their peice with me, and together, we can come up with the whole story. It's never rumors that we discuss...we discuss things that actually happen here at the office. Well, my manager said to me yesterday, "Tomorrow, remind me to tell you something." I said, "Ok." I just thought it was work related. Then she said, "Because it hasn't happened yet, and I don't want to start a rumor." Of course my curiosity was piqued! So I said, "What's it about?" She said, "Well, the owner came to see me today, and I didn't know anything about it, but he asked me about someone here...but I can't really say what it's about, because it hasn't happened...ask me tomorrow." I said, "If it doesn't happen, are you still going to fill me in?" She said, "Yes...it's not good news." Ok...what-the-heck-ever. This morning, I wasn't really thinking about it, until I saw her in the break room, so I said, "So, what was I supposed to remind you to tell me about?" She said, "It hasn't happened yet...it may not happen." I said, "Well, what is it that hasn't or may not happen!?" She said, "Someone might get fired." Oooook....who? She wouldn't tell me who. I said, "I won't tell anyone if you don't want me to." She looked at me like she thought I thought she was an idiot. I laughed it off, and said, "Well, I might tell Keith, and Shay, and Moreen...but that's all!" She laughed. I said, "Have they been here a long time?" She said, "A pretty good while...what constitues a long time?" I said, "As long as me." She said, "No." Fed up by now, I said, "Well, that narrows the feild." and just left it alone. Why would you do that?? Why would you make such a huge deal out of someone MIGHT get fired...or not...or who the heck cares!?!?! She needs sooooo much attention!
westernxer
I think you should stop participating in their gossip sessions. By the way, "all news is gossip." (Thoreau)
Isabelle
Work gossip is just bad stuff. The office grapevine is just bad news. Stay away and don't participate. Where I work, people spend way too much of their time and energy on it, and much of what circulates is not even true. Also, it seems like fun until you're the one they turn on.
