XNemesisX
Yesterday I went to the lake and I ended up scorching myself. I forgot sunscreen but I figured I would be ok since I wasn't going to be out that long. Boy was I wrong... I am in SEVERE pain right now. Not to mention I was riding on this waverunner and for some reason my whole body and back is sore from that also My question...what is the best remedy for a sunburn? Does anyone have some good tips on how to keep it from peeling?

Marshbear
I got a real bad burn when I went to Florida on vacation and I remember thinking " man. My vacation is f*cked because I will have to spend the rest of it indoors". Well I tried running the coldest bath I could stand and I sat in the tub until the heat of the burn was out of my skin. I then applied alot of lotion and it saved my vacation. Peace...
gwennebe
If it's really bad you can try going to the Dr. They can give you a shot and something to help with the immediate pain. At least that's what they gave me when I got burnt really bad. Other than that wear light colored loose fitting clothes and moisturize a lot!! Drink lots of water too!! chaos70
Thankfully, I don't get sunburned. The advantages of being brown and growing up in the south I guess. Aloe plant is a really good one. You can find them at any plant nursery. Just cut a leaf off and rub the cut end on yourself. Anything with aloe is good for home remedy. BUT, keep in mind that if you are experiencing shaking and chills...you need a doctor.
wyzeup
Skin cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers around, it's not some big new revelation. I'm always surprised when I read about people who don't use more common sense. It's a well known fact that being on the water in the summer, the water attracts the sun - you didn't know this? Author XNemesisX
Thanks for the tips, guys. I am still in incredible pain. It's blistered and purple looking. I can hardly walk....so do you all think I might need to see a doctor? I have been in too much pain to shower, or to rub any sort of lotion or gel on it. I bought some spray that has aloe vera in it and have been using that because its the only thing that doesn't hurt like hell. I have been getting the chills/shakes. Is this a reall bad sign? It's a well known fact that being on the water in the summer, the water attracts the sun - you didn't know this? Yes, I knew this. But I really did think I would be okay since I wouldn't be out for very long and I did have a little bit of a base tan. Boy, was I wrong. I got fried. Luckily, the SPF in the makeup I was wearing and the moisturizer under my makeup protected my face so my face is fine. All other areas of my body are pretty much fried. P.S. Is using the aloe vera plant better than using a product that says it contains aloe vera?

agnf666
Get some Solarcaine or Lancaine Spray. It will help sooth the burn. If you are felling dizzy or sick you should go to the doctor. That means you got a pretty bad case of sun poison. ] I think you need to go to the doctor right away. He may beable to prescribe some medicine to help you deal with the pain and blistering. krbshappy71
Once got sunburned terribly, and had to go to the doc. (think red lobster and giant gross blisters burned) I was sick to my stomach so everyone urged me to go in. They gave me something for the nausea, I dunno what, sorry. Afterwards my mom had vinegar-soaked wraps layed on my burn. (we just used dish and washcloths) I don't know if this is an old-wives tale but it REALLY felt SO goooood.....it seemed to evaporate the head right off, and the rags would be warm when we took them off to resoak them. I think it was 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 cool water, sure smelled up the house but I'll never forget how good that felt and I still use that remedy even for less-severe cases. HokeyReligions
I've used the vinegar/water remedy too and it does feel good. I had 2nd & 3rd degree burns once from the sun. I have scars on my face from it and it happend almost 30 years ago. My face was so badly burned (& I did use sunscreen that day) that it cracked and bled. My back was one giant blister and I leaned against a chair when visiting my mom in the hospital that when the blister broke we heard the fluid pour out and splatter on the floor! It left a small puddle. A nurse came in and saw it and they treated me there. See a doc.
Michael86
XNemesisX.....I'm a big sun worshipper. I use witch hazel and then lots of Aloe Vera for days after. I never dry out or peel.
jen_jen_heartbroken
Moisture is key. Nivea creme, followed by Palmers vitamin E oil spray, works really well. I'm pretty burned right now....so I even set my alarm to wake me up in the middle of sleep so I can re-apply.
Author XNemesisX
I have tried a lot of these methods but my arms, shoulders, and back are peeled like CRAZY. The skin is just falling off in big chunks and underneath the peeled skin is this weird purple-ish striped skin. Is this normal?!?!!? I would take a picture and put a link of it but the mods will probably take it off. They took off my tattoo picture links. Has anyone heard of this? P.S. I was using the Solarcaine Aloe Vera spray and this Aloe Vera gel.
ConfusedInOC
XNX, did you get sun blisters? Did you see a Doctor?
Author XNemesisX
Yes, I had blisters. No, I did not see a doc I'm one of those people who avoids seeing a doctor at all costs....

moimeme
It is not at all smart to avoid seeing a physician. You may be permanently scarred - something which might have been preventable.
Author XNemesisX
I have had a lot of sunburns in my life and they healed fine..but it has been a long time since I have really been badly burned. So I don't know if this is going to be a scarring type of sunburn. I just got back from Wal-mart to buy some more stuff to put on it. When I sprayed the stuff on it, it felt like my skin caught on FIRE!@ It stung REALLY bad so I jumped in a cold shower and that made it feel better. Most of the skin has peeled off on my shoulders and back and the skin underneath is tender and pink with some purple stripes (which I guess are the capillaries?) Is this normal? I got the sunburn last Thursday. Its been almost a week....is it too late for me to see a doctor tomorrow?!?!
Author XNemesisX
I have some pure Vitamin E oil...would it be okay to put some on it? I'm going to see my dermatologist tomorrow about this burn. I will croak if I get scars...and what will these scars look like exactly? I can't find anything on the internet about it and I have done several searches already. It doesn't hurt anymore, btw. It just itches like crazy and I think I may be scratching my back and arms in my sleep. It's oozing a little bit. What really sucks is I have a tan so now I will have white patches from this Or....will the scar look white? Like big white patches of skin? Somebody help me please!!! I'm freaking out! Moi, what you said has made me feel nauseous..I am sooo worried!!!!
moimeme
No need to freak out - it's just a bad idea to avoid doctors when you've been so burnt you had a fever. The dermatologist will be able to answer all of your questions because he'll be able to see your skin. Some people scar badly and some heal quickly. But 'oozing' sounds bad. Author XNemesisX
It seems to be improving SOMEWHAT. I have kept Vitamin E oil on it vigorously. I had a cigarette burn on my chest when I was in high school and I thought for sure I would have a hideous scar. But I just put Vit E oil on it religiously and I ended up not getting a scar. I'm hoping the Vit E oil will do the same thing for the burns I have right now. It just sucks because clothing kind of removes the oil so I can only leave it open to air for so long.... I couldn't get in with the derm today she was too booked. I am considering going to the ER. It's been a week now since I got the burn. Basically, now, the skin under the peeled skin looks normal except for the tops of my shoulders. The tops of my shoulders look like RAW skin with the capillaries showing through. Has anyone seen their skin look red under peeled skin and the little veins showing through? If I keep the vit E oil on it do you think I will be ok??? Will that help new skin grow faster over that area??
Author XNemesisX
This is what my skin looks like now. Does this look okay? It's been I think 9 days since I was burned. I see a lot of improvement but it still looks pretty gross. The mods might remove this link since I don't think we are supposed to have them...but I really want to know if you think my skin will be okay. I don't think it is enough for me to just describe it without you actually seeing it with your own eyes. I wanted to go to the doctor but my mom and dad pretty much laughed at me then said they didn't want to pay for it (I'm no longer covered by my mom's health insurance so its super expensive for me to see one). Beware: Do not click on this unless you have a pretty strong stomach and chunks of skin falling off doesn't upset you I just took this picture a few hours ago: http://www.filehigh.com/serve.php?u=2452&i=23816&t=.jpg If you know ANYTHING about sunburns..can you tell me if its okay for my skin to look like this 9-10 days after I was burned???? It doesn't seem to look that bad, but if you're worried invest on your money into something that makes sense and go to a doctor.
