Another stupid RANT

I hate my job. I hate the people I work with, they are all less educated than I am and I don't care if I sound elitist. They all have HS diplomas, AAs at the most, and I am at the lowest payscale even though I'm the only idiot here with a Bachelor's degree in anything. My boss is psychotic and completely unstable. There is this bizarre double standard where some people can come in half an hour late, or take long lunches, and no one says anything, but I am not allowed to mark on my timecard if I come into work early, but if I am 5 minutes late I have to put that on my timecard.

I know I bitch about this all the time. I am making my eight until they fire me so I can get unemployment, or until I can get out from under the thumb of "probation" to transfer to a different department. I don't understand what the point is of making me miserable. IF they want to get rid of me, why not just fire me? Why not let me transfer to a different department? Why are they doing this? Do they get some kind of sick enjoyment seeing me squirm?

I come in early every damn day now, but I never mark it on my timecard. I take shorter lunches and stay late. I do what I'm told over and over again but it's never right. I just wonder what motivates someone to do this to someone else? Misery loves company?

Jesus, just effing FIRE ME ALREADY. I'm DYING here. I feel the lifeforce being sucked out of my eyeballs, like in Joe versus the volcano. I hate that every minute of every day for 40 hours a week I am hating life.

BUT.

I refuse to quit. Just to get back at the effing c*nts. They can bite me, hard. I'll just smile sweetly and ask if they want salt with that. :p

They will have to fire me to get rid of me. Asshoooooooole!!!

I believe you work at an academic institution...is this correct? If so, you need to find a job in the private sector. Most people who work in the non-profit/academic/civil service sectors are people who could not get hired into the private sector.

In general, the quality of the work force and employees in the private sector is much higher.

Sounds like you need another job...

I was in a similar situation at my old job, so I gave my notice and quit two weeks later. Took me awhile, but now I'm in a much better place.

Some causes just aren't worth fighting for, a dead-end job being one of them.

My job responsibilities change from moment to moment. I just want to quit. I am so defeated. I have just effing given up. The job is totally draggin me into the pit of despair. :(

I know, I know. f***ing c*nts, a bunch a f***ing c*nts is what they are. I hate that I have basically been used by my supervisor because she doesn't have the balls to report my boss. I hate that I was naieve enough to be used like that and only now do I realize what a dumbass I was. At least it's motivation enough to apply to grad school.

Great ideas are like crying babies. They should be carried out immediately. :p

kill 'em with kindness ... then give them doctored up Ex-Lax Chocolate Brownies. Better yet, dump ground up flax seed in the batter before baking, that does wonders loosening up tight innards!

just let your wicked sense of humor see you through. If you grease enough toilet seats with vaseline or doing the flaming bag of doggy poo thing on boss's doorstep, that might help them fire you. JUST DON'T GET CAUGHT!!! (If I were a sneakier sort, I'd suggest planting drugs in bxtch-boss's desk, then anonymousely calling UPD, but I'm not.)

I honestly cannot imagine working under such conditions – can you go above HR to a departmental vice president ... or even the president himself?

Nope. We just got a new provost. She don't care.

IN fact I emailed HR about the arm grabbing thing because we have a new dean and the b*tch jumped down my throat and wouldn't answer my questions and kept implying that I wasn't doing my job. So I figure I'm fired by the end of the fiscal year anyways. Oh well. I suppose my wish shall be granted. Now I will be jobless yet again. Maybe I'm just not suited for employment. Maybe I should be one of those crazies muttering to themselves on the street.

haha one of the previous owners of our company brought in fake doggy doo-doo to fool everyone and used it over and over again. Now he comes back to visit with his little psycho dog that barks at everyone. One day the doggy poo appeared in the boardroom again, only it wasn't the fake one!

B_O - make an appointment with an employment lawyer and discuss this situation. If your employers are making life intolerable for you and blatantly treating you differently, then leaving and claiming constructive dismissal might be an option - but obviously take carefully considered advice before jumping into that kind of drastic action. You'd also need to make use of their grievance procedure first - otherwise you might not be able to raise a claim.

It takes a bit of nerve to stand up to your employers and let them know that you're ready and able to make waves if the s*** doesn't stop. Off the record and minus witnesses, unpleasant bosses can say some remarkable things. When you stand up to the boss, you need to steel yourself for a "you're so naive...don't you know what I could do to your career?" response. You have to be ready to react calmly and let them know that you're fit to stand your ground against them (even if you don't feel that inside). People will tell you the worldly wise thing to do is slide out quietly; that it doesn't pay to stand your ground in the workplace. A myth perpetuated by dodgy employers and people who don't have the stomach to assert their rights in the workplace. Provided you act in a level-headed manner, and under the guidance of a good lawyer, it can pay both financially and professionally - and needn't have a long term negative impact on your career.

Here's an option that might favour you. If they want you out of there, then there might be scope for negotiating a compromise agreement containing an attractive financial settlement and including provision for a satisfactory reference. Especially if there are grounds for a potential claim against them. You might decide to let them know very firmly and calmly that you'll go...but you are looking to be compensated for the poor treatment you've received. Preferably through relatively amicable negotiation and under the guidance of your legal representative.

There's no right or wrong answer here, but I'd urge you to get some legal advice so that whichever decision you make about this is a fully informed one. Obviously the usual advice about keeping a careful log of events and gathering any hard evidence of unfavourable treatment applies here.

I'm fittin' to talk to a lawyer. Heck if the initial consultation is free, why the hell not? But honestly, I wrote this to the HR lady -- I don't want to work somewhere where I have to document everything. It's abusurd. This isn't my career and if it was I would so kick some white ass for discrimination. That's prolly the only thing stopping them. They did this, apparently, to another employee who actually levered them to tranfser him to another department and then, he wrote to the bigwigs in the state capitol on the Board of Regents. So this supervisor of mine has been audited before. IMAGINE THAT.

I just have to complain. I put my leave application in like 12 days ago and have gotten no response back. I'm due to go on vacation in 2 weeks. Perhaps she'll be a dear and fire me before I go on vacation? Loverly.

If at all possible, avoid that horrible scenario. Right now you might feel like you won't care if you do get fired, but I think when it comes to the crunch you could be badly wounded by the experience. Particularly if HR & co are lacking in people skills.

Much better to see if a lawyer can negotiate a little "goodbye package" for you. You might not feel like entering into the spirit of amicable negotiation with these muppets, but it's the best way for you to come out of this smelling and feeling sweet. Leave on bitter terms, and the resentment could fester and affect you in subsequent jobs.

Have you sent and printed off an email about your leave application so that you have a record of making it?

Blind Otter -

You are in a hell of a tough spot - but anger is NOT the way to handle this, nor is passive aggressive smiling. You need to calmly and intelligently counter the cr@p that's being dumped on you.

First and foremost remember HR is not there to be your friend, they are there to protect the institution from lawsuits. Yes they will respond, as they have, to a valid complaint - but do not mistake that for concern for the employee - it's just not there.

Ok so what to do? First make sure you know ALL the policies as they apply to a person at your level. I have to assume that you are a non-exempt employee, since you must fill in a time card. If that is indeed the case, and HR is wondering ifyou are doing your job, and your job changes daily - ask them if you can have a current copy of your job description. They cannot expect you to do that which is not included in the job description - period full stop. Ok they can - but they cannot fire you for not doing it.

Next what are the policies for approving requests for time off? Generally they must have a valid reason to deny such a request and probably have to respond within a specific timeframe - it's worth looking into.

As far as coming in early - are you asked to work earlier than your normal arrival time, or do you come in early to avoid traffic? If you are working early hours, for the benefit of the insitution, they NEED to pay you for it. If you are coming in early for your own convenience - don't go to your desk. Get coffee, go for a walk whatever, just NOT your desk. If you are at your desk, and asked to do something - no matter how sweetly you say, oops it's not 9 yet, they will ding you for it. Conversely if you are being asked to work more than 40 hours a week (or less in some states) - then you must be paid for them at a rate of 1.5 times your regularly hourly rate. That's the law, and frankly if you've kept good records, you can try to go for back pay (if you choose to file suit, or negotiate a settlement).

Next if the HR has not done anything about the fact that your boss grabbed your arm they are liable here! One of the criteria for discerning the validity of a hostile work environment claim is the employer knew or should have known of the harassment and failed to take remedial action. Regardless of your probabtionary status they should have moved you - ignoring the situation is just unacceptable.

Finally document, document, document. No confrontation no passive aggressive behaviour, just write everything down. Even if you decide to leave on your own - documentation can actually allow you to threaten them into a settlement to keep you quiet and give you a good reference.

Hope this helps. I will tell you my heart goes out to you every time i read your posts - I only wish I could help you.
