Smelling things that aren't there

Recommended Posts

Recently I have noticed that I can smell things that aren't there and it freaks me out and the people who are around me out.

For example, RIGHT NOW I am smelling greasy pizza (The Tostinos kind that disgusts me). It's making me feel nauseous.

Usually, it is gross smells that I smell (that no one else smells) and it makes me so sick that I really feel like throwing up.

What the heck is up with this?!

I'm betting no one will respond to this because everyone will think I'm a nut. :(

Edit: I just did a search and look at what this person wrote about smelling things that aren't there. Surely this is NOT true:

Do you ever smell things that aren't there? This could be quite serious!

I read a story about the human brain.

If you smell things frequently, that aren't really there, your brain could seriously be rotting in your skull. I guess that it's either a virus or a product of polution (both physical and frequency).. no one has figured it out yet.

As your brain is rotting away, it triggers a stimulation between your memory and olfactory... some people start to see things at the later stages. There aren't any other sign of it until death... and even then it isn't readily evident.... they stumbled on it by accident in a coincidental conversation about a person that was experiencing it that had also had a brain tumor in remision before she kicked over dead.

No ooze out the nose.... or ears.... no pain... just weird, out of place smells and sometimes visual illusions. It makes sense, knowing that the brain actually feels no pain. Some of those that have come forward have also mentioned "voices" in their head... not like "I'm freaking crazy," voices, but more like commercials....chit chat...

I guess they are trying to keep it under wraps to some degree, to keep from having a huge panic.... you know.. some lady farts in the grocery store, and suddenly the 911 lines are full of people freaked about smelling something....

Where on earth did you read your story about rotting brains????????

Having the 'flu or a sinus infection can affect your olfactory sense so you either stop smelling things or smell things that aren't there. If you haven't had a cold or sinus infection lately, call your doc and get a referral to an ENT. And quit reading bizarre stories about stuff like this.

What is an ENT??

I haven't had a cold or sinus infection lately. The only bad physical ailment I have right now is my wretched flaking, scaling, bloody, healing sunburn. :(

I have only experienced this once. And I am convinced it was caused by extreme boredom brought about by my Statistics class. Most mind-numbing course I ever had to take. I swear I smelt Strawberry ice cream one evening in that class.

Actually brain tumors can cause a lack of the ability to smell.

Anyways, you on any meds?

The one I'm on now, leaves a terrible taste in my mouth all day....and sometimes I think it's also effecting my nose.

Nope. I was taking Effexor but I stopped taking it a while back. I'm pretty sure it's completely out of my system now.

Are you pregnant XNemX???

Is there something you're not telling us?

 Is that a sign of pregnancy?

I don't think I am. I haven't been on bc for about 6 months now and I have been having unprotected sex! Dumb I know... :o

I just had my period though a little over a week ago. It was a light period though... should I be worried?!

I would be sort of happy to be pregnant. But at the same time, not sure if I'm quite ready.

Oh man..I am so dumb. I just haven't been thinking...

How long do you have to be preggers before you start having symptoms?

I was only joking!!!

I don't know much about pregnancy... I've never been down that path before, but I do know it does funny things to you!

If you think there may be a chance, why don't you try a home test kit, just in case? I'd say if you did have a [light] period then you should be fine, but I'm no expert....

Good luck - let us know what happens....

Although, can I come to the christening if I am right??? :bunny:
